We booked a stay of 2 nights here and was surprised that after the Maria la gorda junction there was a barrier stopping traffic going on to Cabo san antonio. The security guard told us that the hotel had been closed for 4 months. He told to go to the Maria la gorda resort as it was the same company. We booked the stay through Cuba travel network as we were told they were a good travel agency in Cuba. When I emailed them about the situation they said they was not aware the hotel was closed. You have to ask yourself how a cuban travel agency was not aware that a hotel is closed. So when I got back home I tried to book cabo san antonio again on there website and lo and behold they are still accepting reservations for a hotel that is closed. So we can surmise that it is a scam cooked up between cuba travel network and gaviota hotels to get more people to go to maria la gorda which frankly is a stalinist carribean resort. My advice is if you want to go to the peninsula stay around dinar del rio and go for the day as the snorkelling is good. AND DON'T BOOK ANYTHING WITH THE CUBA TRAVEL NETWORK AS THEY ARE CHARLATANS. I am still waiting for my refund, I won't be holding my breath

We got it really wrong on this one so if you are reading the very mixed reviews on this hotel trust me save yourself a lot of money, time and enjoyment and just DO NOT GO !!!! I never write reviews but this hotel is so appalling that I really don't want anyone else to waste time in such a fantastic country such as Cuba staying in this hotel, it is beyond terrible. We read the reviews and thought it will be basic but the beach will be worth it. The beach is lovely but there are much nicer beaches in Cuba and the hotel is so terrible you just cant justify it. The main problem is the food and it isn't that it is basic, it is but that's fine it was there was no food !! We were on full board and the only food they had was eggs, fish and rice. There was no fruit, juice, veg, salads, cheese, starters, deserts and even though we had paid for full board they didn't care less. The staff are terrible, they didn't care less. When we arrived in Havana all the Cubans warned us not to go and even the lady who works for this hotel company told us we were mad to go there ! We couldn't cancel our booking as we were in full cancellation so we went but in hindsight we should have cancelled and incurred the full costs and not wasted 4 days of our holiday in this dump, it would have been a better option. Also there is no public transport option so a taxi is super expensive and very few taxis will go there as the road is really bad, you will pay 250 each way. Also we tried on numerous occasions to discuss this with them before, during and after our stay and still have heard nothing from them back, terrible customer service.

We arrived in thunder and heavy rain, after a long drive from Havana, and spent 4 nights as the only guests at the place. We snorcled most of the time, since the ocean was the only place we could escape from the many flying insects. We saw nobody else on the Beach.

Our room was very dirty. The room was not dusted, with cigar ash, etc. on the furniture, the floors were terribly dirty as well. In all my years of housekeeping I have never seen such a dirty room. The mirrors and tv were cleaned with a greasy cloth. Our king size bed had a broken mattress, forcing us to sleep on only 1/4th of the bed. There were no bike rentals like we were promised. I incurred over 100 mosquito bites in less than 18 hours and the hotel had no mosquito spray to alleviate my discomfort. My body was in complete discomfort and pain. The beach was beautiful but due to the sand flies we could not spend more than a minuet basking in the sun without being bit. The restaurant food was a disaster. We were served a can of cold canned green beans as an appetizer, and it went terribly down from there. We were supposed to spend 4 nights, but left within 18 hours. Would not recommend, and would never, in a million years return. There are no walking trails or nature tours as we hopped.

You drive from Havana along the main highway avoiding the ox carts then you drive through Guanahacabibes national park (stopping to show your passport). After miles of tropical forest passing iguanas, tropical birds and wild pigs, along with glimpses of white sandy beaches, palm trees and rolling ocean you reach this spot. The cabins are fabulous and the best accommodation (beautiful air-conditioned wooden cabins) we found in Cuba - definitely 5 star apart from the occasional loss of water pressure. The beaches are white and unspoiled and almost deserted, there is a coral reef and tropical fish a hundred meters or so out - easy snorkelling. The only down side is the food which is average (not bad, just average) - otherwise it would truly be five star. The cocktails are good though.
