Good Hotel in the center of Pinar del Rio, clean with air condition, WIFI (small fee) and friendly service. Hotel is only in few minutes distances to good bars and restaurants. We stayed one night with a family.

Pinar del Rio is an unattractive town with very aggressive street hustlers. We had unpleasant run-ins with several of them. (Their equivalents in other Cuban towns we visited were no problem at all.) There is nothing to see or do here but we were persuaded by a booking agent that it was a good base for Vinales. It isn't.

The hotel team do well to maintain a clean, attractive place in a town like this. Our room was immaculate and the noise from the street was lost in the hum of the efficient air conditioning. The restaurant, however, is a disaster area. Hard to believe it is part of the same establishment. (This is a problem as the other restaurants in Pinar del Rio recommended in the latest Rough Guide all seem to have closed down.)

The restaurant and the location combine to make this a place that can't really be recommended, unless you really have to stay in this town.

We had the first night in a street-side room with a lovely balcony but heavens the lorries, scooters, cars, discos ..... So the second night we swapped to an inside room which was blissfully quiet! The ceiling was high and the room was spacious enough for it not to be claustrophobic.

The staff were very helpful indeed - the security man Doniel and the cleaning lady, who followed us from room to room with our hard-won bedside lamps, as we checked and rejected various possibilities, particularly so!

The restaurant was fine - food not brilliant but perfectly adequate, and the service friendly.

As to the town itself, here and in LP people worry about the hustlers - well, we had no problems at all - anyone who offered us a restaurant, a case, a cigar, a boy or a girl, almost always in that order, was good-humoured and not at all aggressive.

In fact we really enjoyed wandering around - every single "sight" was closed for restoration (though the Ballet Nacional was due at the theatre the night after we left) but there are so many fine, if dilapidated, buildings from the 20's and 30's, the bus garage with its parade of unlikely-looking vehicles masquerading as buses, the Coppelia ice-cream shop, and Independencia Square right at the top of Marti to sit and watch the romances, the gossips, the rollerskating and the snoozing. Not at all interested in tourism, it would seem, and a chance to see "real" provincial Cuba.

Nice clean place, rooms are fresh and the staff are attentive. It is located right in the center of the town and is a noisy corner. The bar and outside patio will give you a real feel to the comings and going of this little city. The rooms are bare but clean, showers with hot water, tall ceiling, love the age of the building. The breakfast was okay to bad, they are figuring out staffing and the food was poor. As a place to catch a nights sleep on the way to somewhere else, fine. Not a long stay.

A one night stay here is certainly an experience and a taste of old Cuba as you soak up the colonial architecture and furnishings. I would not want to stay longer, however. Our room was small, dark, cramped and effectively windowless as the one small window was far above head height and closed and shuttered. There was no clothes storage other than a few hangers on a rail. There was only one dim wall light, again high up, and no bedside lights so reading was almost impossible. However there was an un-curtained fanlight above the door so the light from the corridor shone in all night. What with that and the echoing voices and banging doors along the tiled corridor, it was all too easy to imagine you were in prison. One redeeming feature was the air conditioning which was the most modern and efficient we came across in Cuba. The evening meal was OK – unpretentious Cuban cuisine reasonably well cooked and nicely presented. Breakfast was less good – limited choice and items continually running out.

The one bright spot was the attentive and eager staff. All were pleasant and helpful and at dinner we were asked to write our comments in a guest book which all the staff gathered round to read there and then. They genuinely seemed to care.

Pinar del Rio is not an exciting tourist destination and I wouldn’t go back, however the vuelta bajo hotel is a good place to stay for a night, or 2
Centrally located, clean and reasonably priced. Another beautiful old building in Cuba in need of work but still exuding history and culture. You feel like time has stopped and in some weird way you enjoy it

Very good hotel. Rooms quiet when not facing main road. Personnel very helpful and welcoming. Breakfast ok. Eggs, juice, tea, coffee, fruits and fresh bread. Pinar del Rio not necessarily worth a visit but if you stop by, this hotel is a good choice.

This is probably the best hotel in the Pinar Del Rio area. It has a kind of faded elegance. Having said that, I will add that if you don't have high expectations you'll be a lot happier. The rooms are tiny and so are the bathrooms. Our room had one very small window that was too high up to see out of. I opened it, but that let in mosquitos, so don't do that. On the other hand, the rooms ARE air conditioned and the staff is lovely. I needed to use the services of the laundress and she brought everything back within an hour. There is no internet in most of Cuba, so don't look for that. There is a safe and a hair dryer in the room and a place to hang clothes (not a closet). The beds are not so great--particularly the pillows. The staff is kind of noisy in the hallways early in the morning as they bring out suitcases or talk on their cell phones. Breakfast is included and is not particularly good. Dinner was so-so, but the waiter was terrific and a violinist entertained. I have two important tips: The showers are extremely slippery. To be safe, put a towel down and stand on that. Also, the rooms are up a flight of steps and no elevator. However, the hotel is more than happy to carry your luggage up. I want to note that the book "Lonely Planet" states that the "rooms are spacious". They must be talking about the common rooms, like the dining rooms, because the rooms are definitely NOT spacious.

We had not expected to stay here, but were on an Archers tour and had been 'bumped' from the hotel in the brochure. The hotel is a charming colonial type, old fashion hotel, simple but clean and hospitable. The room was small and a bit poky, and my wife struggled with the fact that the only small window had the air con unit in it so was effectively windowless. However, it was clean, had a safe, and the beds were reasonably comfortable.

The staff were absolutely lovely, couldn't do enough for us and seemed genuinely delighted we were there. The evening meal was simple Cuban fare, served as though the fatted calf had been killed for us.

After dinner we all sat on the veranda watching the random, rambling colourful world go by, whilst drinking very inexpensive Cuban beer. Total bliss!!

We wouldn't have wanted to stay for many night here, and although initially disappointed at being 'bumped' were so glad we did as we felt we had experienced a piece of authentic Cuba.

... you are in Cuba, in the country. A first glance we were not too thrilled with the size of the room and the fact we were not facing the street, the front facing rooms each have a small balcony. But, of course, our room had what a traveler wants in a sleeping room ... to be able to sleep.
It was quiet, the ac worked very well, it was clean. The staff quickly delivered a more comfortable chair and some blankets. The staff was very helpful.

The hotel has one sleeping floor ... up well worn and beautiful marble stairs, note; stairs. No elevator. However, our luggage was cheerfully handled for us.

We can recommend the veranda bar to catch the parade of 1950s cars in constant stream. It is obviously a local favorite, as the tables were full with cheerful friends.

The dinner and breakfast were simple, but it is in the country.

The colonial architecture is beautiful.

We do not have irons in the rooms, but the waitress does the service on request. We have hair dryers in the rooms and 110V and 220V voltage. Thanks for thinking about us. We expect it
