The hotel team do well to maintain a clean, attractive place in a town like this. Our room was immaculate and the noise from the street was lost in the hum of the efficient air conditioning. The restaurant, however, is a disaster area. Hard to believe it is part of the same establishment. (This is a problem as the other restaurants in Pinar del Rio recommended in the latest Rough Guide all seem to have closed down.)
The restaurant and the location combine to make this a place that can't really be recommended, unless you really have to stay in this town.
The staff were very helpful indeed - the security man Doniel and the cleaning lady, who followed us from room to room with our hard-won bedside lamps, as we checked and rejected various possibilities, particularly so!
The restaurant was fine - food not brilliant but perfectly adequate, and the service friendly.
As to the town itself, here and in LP people worry about the hustlers - well, we had no problems at all - anyone who offered us a restaurant, a case, a cigar, a boy or a girl, almost always in that order, was good-humoured and not at all aggressive.
In fact we really enjoyed wandering around - every single "sight" was closed for restoration (though the Ballet Nacional was due at the theatre the night after we left) but there are so many fine, if dilapidated, buildings from the 20's and 30's, the bus garage with its parade of unlikely-looking vehicles masquerading as buses, the Coppelia ice-cream shop, and Independencia Square right at the top of Marti to sit and watch the romances, the gossips, the rollerskating and the snoozing. Not at all interested in tourism, it would seem, and a chance to see "real" provincial Cuba.
The one bright spot was the attentive and eager staff. All were pleasant and helpful and at dinner we were asked to write our comments in a guest book which all the staff gathered round to read there and then. They genuinely seemed to care.
Centrally located, clean and reasonably priced. Another beautiful old building in Cuba in need of work but still exuding history and culture. You feel like time has stopped and in some weird way you enjoy it
The staff were absolutely lovely, couldn't do enough for us and seemed genuinely delighted we were there. The evening meal was simple Cuban fare, served as though the fatted calf had been killed for us.
After dinner we all sat on the veranda watching the random, rambling colourful world go by, whilst drinking very inexpensive Cuban beer. Total bliss!!
We wouldn't have wanted to stay for many night here, and although initially disappointed at being 'bumped' were so glad we did as we felt we had experienced a piece of authentic Cuba.

It was quiet, the ac worked very well, it was clean. The staff quickly delivered a more comfortable chair and some blankets. The staff was very helpful.
The hotel has one sleeping floor ... up well worn and beautiful marble stairs, note; stairs. No elevator. However, our luggage was cheerfully handled for us.
We can recommend the veranda bar to catch the parade of 1950s cars in constant stream. It is obviously a local favorite, as the tables were full with cheerful friends.
The dinner and breakfast were simple, but it is in the country.
The colonial architecture is beautiful.
