I feel bad about giving this place a three star review because the guesthouse itself and the owner were both great. The place is clean and the kitchen has everything you need to cook with. We purchased breakfast and it was more food than we could eat. If we'd been the only guests there this would have been a 5 star review. Unfortunately the neighbors/other guests staying there really ruined the experience for us. There is a house under construction next door and there was a man sawing and hammering until about 10:30pm, not very conducive to sleep. The other guests staying downstairs with us during our stay seemed perfectly normal but twice tried to get into our room in the middle of the night. We still can't figure out why they would try the door, find it locked, and then wait a little while before trying to open our locked door again. It was very creepy and we felt uncomfortable from that point onward because we could think of no valid reason for trying to get into our room like that. Cue immediate thoughts about being axe murdered by the other guests. At about 11pm a group of young Russians arrived and spent the next 3 hours loudly stomping back and forth across the upstairs apartment nonstop. It was deafening, like a herd of elephants overhead. It was impossible to get to sleep until 2am even with earplugs. It was not an experience I'd want to repeat. By no fault of the owner, it was really our worst guesthouse experience in Iceland.

Response from Jóhanna I, Owner at Guesthouse Kvoldstjarnan
Responded Aug 13, 2018
We are very sorry to hear this and sincerely apologise. No doubt, we would have felt the same in this situation and expressed ourselves in a similar manner. Your review is moderately written and fair. It only expresses what happened from your perspective and a natural reaction under the circumstances. To fill in the blanks, our guests staying in the second floor flat entered the ground floor by mistake and they must have tried to open the door to your room – not your fellow guests downstairs. In retrospect, we should have contacted you and apologized for any inconvenience this may have caused. Thank you for informing us and the nice things you say about our guesthouse despite this unfortunate incident. Again, we ask you to accept our deepest apologies.

Our family of five stayed in the second floor apartment. There were three comfortable bedrooms, a well stocked kitchen with milk, orange juice, fruit, coffee, skyr, breakfast food. The apartment was very clean with a nice deck and windows all with a beautiful view of the town. The proprietor allowed us to use the washing machine in the office to do a load of wash. She even took our clothes out of the dryer and folded them for us while we were out sightseeing. We enjoyed the lobster restaurant across the street. We walked along the beautiful beach and visited nearby Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss.

We stayed one night in this clean and stylish guesthouse. We had a twin bed room on the ground floor, with shared kitchen, living area, shower room and separate toilet. The room was super clean and minimalist. The bathroom likewise. We were given our breakfast things in a small basket with our room number, when we checked in; the breakfast was simple and adequate. The living area was comfortable with some stylish modern art on the walls. The hosts awaited our arrival and were very friendly; we paid by card on arrival.

We've made a roadtrip through te South and West of Iceland this winter. This Guesthouse was from far the best we did !! Thorwalter was a great host, and we enjoyed every minute we spend over there. Everything was clean, well organized. Not one negative word about this place. If we're back in Iceland we're definitly staying again at Kvoldstjarnan Guesthouse !!
