We stayed for two nights, eating in twice - one a la carte and one tasting menu. This is a very impressive hotel/restaurant with rooms in a lovely location. Highlights were the level of service and food. From the initial welcome and throughout our stay we were very well looked after and the quality of the food was exceptional.

We had heard good reports about "The Cottage in the Wood", so decided to have dinner there and also stay overnight. The location is idyllic on the Whinlatter Pass. Very old (17th century coaching House?), converted to a small hotel or rather, as the sign says, "restaurant with rooms". There is a terrace with magnificent views over to Skiddaw, with...

I might run out of superlatives on this review - food simply divine both dinner and breakfast, massive comfy bed, stunning views off the terrace and from our room of Skiddaw, staff delightful. Lounge area lovely and relaxing. Only feedback is the bathroom is tiny, options when adpating the old house were probably restricted but it does let the room...

We absolutely adored staying at The Cottage in the Wood. My family and I had the six-course taster menu on Saturday night and it was heavenly - one of the best meals we've ever had. The rooms are very peaceful. The view from the conservatory at breakfast is beautiful. It's also in a great location for walkers! Kath and her...

I visited the cottage in the woods for the first time with friends for dinner in May. The location is stunning! We were to have the taster menu and in all honesty each and every course was sublime. Their chef Richard has clearly put so much effort into exploring how the flavours and textures of the various ingredients work, so...

Well-run, small hotel, situated in an area of natural beauty. Friendly & welcoming atmosphere. The room although small contained all the necessities & was clean & well maintained. We booked on a dinner, bed & breakfast basis & enjoyed the food. All locally sourced produce. The breakfast in particular was excellent. Even the marmalade & other preserves were made on...

We recently stayed for 3 nights and it was wonderful. The room was clean, comfortable and quiet. The food was excellent. We dined in the restaurant one evening and was not disappointed. Breakfast every morning was wonderful and to top it off we watched red squirrels whilst we dined.

Excellent hotel and deserves its 5 stars on tripadvisor. A small family-ran hotel with impeccable service but not too overbearing. Our room was comfy and we dined two out of three nights. The menu was exciting and the food was excellent and Michelin star quality for half the price. It's a short drive from Keswick and Buttermere is worth a...

My wife and I visited the Cottage in the Woods for our wedding anniversary. We stayed for three nights and could not have been happier with our stay. Location: In the heart of the Lake District. Easy to find despite being tucked away in the woods with beautiful views across the hills. You don't come here for a quick walk...

Fantastic welcome , fantastic food , fantastic room . We cannot wait to go back .I lost my love for the lakes after a lot of bad hotels and bed and breakfasts but Kathy and her staff have changed all that from the minute you walk through the door to when you leave nothing is a problem . You must...
