Staying just the one night after doing the Bass Tri, the Royal Oak is perfectly located for Bassenthwaite and Keswick. The room was exactly what I wanted, clean and comfy with a decent TV, tea / coffee and a selection of biscuits. I spent a couple of hours in the bar, which is very friendly and relaxed. The restaurant was... More

We had enjoyed a long walk in the hills and decided to come here rather than cook at the tent. It wasn't cheap, at main courses being an average of £11, but it was excellent value as the food really was outstanding. It was hearty, fresh, hot, and despite the pub being so busy that we had to hover near... More

This hotel is in the centre of Braithwaite a lovely village with some good walks straight from the front door. The beer is Jennings and they have all the favourites. The breakfast and dinner were good pub food standard. The rooms were well equipped, we stayed in the 4 poster each time. We recommend a trip to Cockermouth, Wordsworth house... More

We had an evening meal at the pub. Staff helpful and friendly. There are three choices for vegetarians. We had the lasagne. Decent sized portion and generous salad. Good choice of desserts, not that we needed one. Ideal place to go after a day out walking. Good beer.

Our second stay in this charming country inn and it's lost none it's appeal. Our room this time, a four-poster, was very spacious, excellently furnished and very pleasant. Nice touches included two high back chairs, perfect for restoring the posture after a days walking and a lovely settee at the foot of the bed, ideal for watching tv. The Royal... More

Really good food and great beer combined with walking boots and a scattering of well behaved dogs made this a very friendly pub indeed and we loved the atmosphere and the location. We visited twice and will go again next time we are in the area

First visit for 15 years and have to say that the pub atmosphere hasn't changed in that time. I was about a minute late for Sunday lunch and the barman virtually bit my head off when I asked for a menu. Not at all welcoming and a bad advertisement for tourism in Cumbria. On the plus side - the pint... More

We have been here a few times for a pint and a couple of times for food. Cannot fault in any way. Friendly landlord and always a warm welcome. Food portions are huge and tasty (although have not eaten through the menu yet!). Perfect place to warm up and recharge after a day out on the fells. We don't take... More

The exterior of the pub looked a bit run down but we thought that we would give it a try. The barman seemed to be lacking experience and spent much of his time playing on his phone. The highlight was when he brought the bottle of wine to oiur table along with the glasses and just left them. We then... More

Myself & my partner stayed for the weekend as a birthday treat & we really enjoyed our stay. We were greeted by the very friendly owners & staff then showed to our good-sized & spotlessly clean room. We ate both evenings in the pub & every meal was good hearty pub food, along with a few decent cask beers to... More
