This review + rating is based on the poor/non existent wifi internet in Starboard Cottage and the appaling attitude of the owners to this + their failure of ownership” of the issue. After arriving we logged in all 4 of our devises, 3 brand new and 1 older. Reception was poor at 1-2 bars with no signal outside. We told the owners the 1st evening. Nothing improved. Next day we spoke to the owners who offered us the log in to a business e mail server hard wired to their house which was so weak none of our devises could connect. They rebooted the system + it then got worse. My partner is our local community expert helping sort out internet issues + has a diagnostic tool that showed there was an encryption issue with their server. We told them this + it was ignored. My partner was happy to offer help to sort the internet issue out. By 11.00am we had no internet signal. We tried to phone the owners who didn’t answer + we went to their house to try and find them. At 3.30pm having not been able to make contact at all we decided to leave as we were fed up + we needed internet. It was part of what was offered in the daily rate. We sent an e mail when we could get a signal telling them why we had left. We were sent back a highly unprofessional + rude e mail stating the problem was ours + all of our devices were faulty. This is just nonsense. Telling us next door's wifi was fine wasn’t helpful. So if you rely on wifi please don’t come here and dont expect any help if you have a problem

Response from June Williams, Owner at Orveas Bay Resort
Responded Oct 23, 2020
This has been one of the most stressful and anxiety ridden years experienced in my 30 years in the hospitality industry. The majority of our guests are aware of the problems this pandemic has created. Many accommodation facilities chose to not reopen as the time and energy needed to clean and sanitize bedding, furniture and generally every surface touched in a cottage needs to be addressed. It was apparent from the time this guest arrived that he was not aware of the remote location of the cottage nor was familiar with the type of accommodation offered for a romantic interlude, Honeymooners, anniversaries, birthdays or just a place to have a couple retreat to reconnect and enjoy each other. No tv, no newspapers in a quiet secluded setting . Wifi and cell phones are not a priority here. He was very distressed that there was no wifi service to the cottage and even though we tried to remedy the problem by explaining that other guests were not having problems but we needed time to try to locate that cottages problem. At no time did I ever consider that his devices were the problem ( they brought 4!) only that I took my simple little tablet over to the cottage and sent myself an email to my computer in the house with no problem. We are likely the only cottage rentals in the area that attempts to offer free wifi service, however if a guest says that they are planning on working or need the service for emergency contact we decline the booking as we cannot insure there will be service. We have now ordered a new router as the one we have is old and with the heavy rains may need to be replaced. Cell phones: some work here some do not. We have 2 one works , the other does not, Verizon works in the area many of US guests use that service. Perhaps my focus is more on keeping my guests, housekeeper and ourselves well and healthy, offering a safe sanctuary rather internet problems. This guest says he could not find us the day he left. It was a beautiful sunny fall day so we packed a lunch and spent the day down at the beach puttering around the boat house and enjoying the peaceful, quite oceanside setting.. This guest perhaps should have done the same! You can please people most of the time but you cannot please people all of the time. Thanks for reading . Stay Safe and Healthy! June Williams

This place is a wonderful gem by the Sea! The view is amazing, with lots of places to sit outside and soak it all in, including the hot tub. Our cabin was very clean and well decorated. The bathroom had lots of towels, including larger beach towels for use outside at the hot tub. The kitchen was very well equipped with a good variety of dishes and utensils. There were also lots of extra, thoughtful touches to help our weekend go smoothly. June stocked the fridge with butter, milk, some juice boxes and basic condiments. There was coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and the basics for cooking (oil, salt, pepper and some spices). There was even some microwave popcorn that we enjoyed while watching Casablanca that was part of their small movie collection. There were fresh flowers on the nightstand and the table, which was set with napkins and a candle for a quiet dinner. The location is perfect! Just down the road from Shirley Delicious, a fantastic local breakfast and lunch cafe, and a short drive to the amazing French Beach Provincial Park, where you can walk or relax on a beautiful sandy beach. Drive a little bit further and you will find, Sandcut Beach, Jordan River, China Beach and Mystic Beach, just to name a few. So much to do in this area! We will definitely be back.

We just returned from a very relaxing weekend at Orveas Bay Resort. This is truly a hidden gem - quiet, clean, welcoming, beautifully appointed, and thoughtfully equipped with all the basic stuff (you know ... salt and pepper, oil and vinegar, coffee, tea, purified water - just bring a few groceries and you'll be fully independent). Also should mention the relaxing hot tub under the stars. The surroundings are pristine West Coast - simply stunning (and the hosts are terrific)! I give Orveas Bay my highest recommendation.

We spent the weekend at Orveas Bay and appreciated all the unexpected special little touches - from milk and cold water in the fridge to plush bath towels for the hot tub. The view was amazing during the day, and even better at nights as we watched the cruise ships go by with their beautiful lights. We lucked out and there was a sailing race during our stay that brought boats with coloured spinnakers sailing past. Such a wonderful retreat!

We stayed here for three nights and fell in love with it. It felt so exotic to us even though we were from BC thanks to the lush landscaping. A lot of thought went into maximizing indoor and outdoor space on our starboard cabin and making you feel as if you were the only guests. We spotted black bear, deer, bald and golden eagles, a rabbit and plenty of butterflies while relaxing and you feel so away from the hustle and bustle. The hammock was to die for and even if we didn’t have good weather we would have enjoyed the cozy interior too. It’s worth allowing yourself a day just to enjoy the beauty and relaxation at the resort rather than trying to cram all days full of the areas beaches and trails. We also checked out Stoked woodfired pizza and Barking Dog Brewery, both of which are nearby and worth a visit! Insider tip: Get groceries in Langford instead of Sooke and it’ll be much cheaper!
