Haast is a place many people would pass through, only staying a night because they have to so knowing this would be the situation I would be in I booked the only hotel that offered accommodation and food.
The staff were all fantastic.
The room was basic, clean, well used and it seemed clear that management wouldn’t be putting any effort into sprucing things up....which would have been fine but not for $182.00; a fairer rate would be in the $90-110 range.
Restaurant food was standard pub fair.
I was leaving early the next morning, had prepaid breakfast and the chef was kind enough to get up before breakfast service commenced to cook up a wonderful hot breakfast. Thank-you.

I stayed one night here. It was raining on arrival after 2pm and I paid and got my key, but the room was still unmade from previous person when I entered it so I found a cleaner who said to come back in half an hour while they clean it and make up the room. Not much to do in Haast in the pouring rain! The room was cold so I rang for a heater which was happily supplied. Quiet room. Restaurant attached but the meal was very tasteless. For the cost I would probably stay in different accommodation in Haast next time.

Hi DJW The hotel is conscientiously looking for ways to improve and we value your feedback. I have had a meeting with head housekeeper and head receptionist regarding checking you into a unclean room, and we have re-looked at our procedures and have adjusted accordingly so this should not happen again. Thank you again and kindest regards Tracey

Our room was plenty big enough for two but would have been squashed with three.
Our laptop could not connect with the wifi despite all efforts from the very friendly and helpful receptionist, Therese so she offered and authorised the full B&B package for us without question. A very comfortable bed indeed. The bathroom was a little small but functional. The patio doors were somewhat difficult to open and like another reviewer HadleyPark this either meant getting bitten or being stuffy. We chose stuffy! The cafe side produced a super main for us despite being quite full with a coach party who'd just arrived. Breakfast buffet was plentiful though could have been hotter. They also produced gluten free toast upon request but why are these slices so small??

The hotel is old and needs a lot of TLC, but it was clean and the bed comfortable. We had been lead to believe that the restaurant was good after a review on Newstalkzb. IT WASN'T1 I had the chicken snitz which was two thin slabs of greasy processed chicken and the chips veren't much better. The breakfast had no continental items out and when we asked for them, three items were brought to our table in small bowls. Not a place we would return to and there is no cell phone coverage or wifi

Hi Mary, As cellphone tower is based in the township 4kms away we can only get phone reception in our Frontier Cafe & Bar at this stage, hopefully that will change once more towers connected. I am sorry that the Wi-Fi was inconsistent - with most New Zealand Wi-Fi or Broadband connections there can be carrier inconsistencies through usage at peak times and of course with remote areas like ourselves when satellite needs repairs it is weather dependent if they can get the helicopters up to the satellite base. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay on the West Coast Kindest regards Tracey

Wishing to check in after lunch the hotel was locked up, there was no one around. We then went to the visitor information and the lady rang the hotel for us. The lady at the hotel said they didn’t open until 3.00pm but come over and she would check us in now. On entering our hotel accommodation block we were met with a rubbish bin that was overflowing, leaves that had not been swept up in quite a while along with numerous cobwebs. Our room was acceptable but the heater was not sufficient for nearly zero deg at night. We had booked a full Breakfast For the following morning, around 8.00pm the night before we received a phone call advising breakfast would be delivered to our room and what would we like, most unsatisfactory. This hotel is not operating in a proper manner, and we would suggest it should be closed. Finally the night previously we stayed at the Scenic Hotel Franz Josef which was exceptional and the difference in the price between the two was only $7.50. !!!!!!

Hi Barbra First my sincerest apologies that we did not meet your expectations on your recent stay with us. I have spoken to housekeeping regarding overflowing rubbish bins and cobwebs, we now have our maintenance staff going around to empty bins, and we have now changed our daily housekeeping and porters cleaning duties. If we only have 1 or 2 rooms staying we offer room service breakfast. Once again my sincerest apologies and I do hope you try us again some day in the future Tracey

I stayed here in the early 1970s and knew the family that built it. Nothing has changed in 45 years. The original bathrooms are way outdated with broken shower fittings and a chipped basin. The old patio doors are very hard to lock and no air conditioning. Haast is the sandfly and mosquito capital of the world so you have the choice of a very stuffy room or being eaten alive. We were told the restaurant was only for the foreign bus tours and we would have to eat in the public bar. No access thru the hotel to the public bar and it rains a lot in Haast, not impressed at all with that option as that also was just as depressing with Formica tables and steel chairs. A better option is to drive to the new township 3km up the road, another public bar but with loads of Coaster appeal.

Thank you for your feedback Hadleypark, this helps us moving forward with budgets and determining what needs to be actioned in the coming year. I have put these items at the top of the list, fridges in the rest of our room, new doors both interior and exterior. We have 2 restaurants on site our Frontier Cafe & Bar which is where the locals and off traffic guests dine, most house guests prefer dining there, so our Waiatoto Restaurant is where we put our big groups to eat as they prefer buffets. Although any guests are more than welcome to join them, which is what our receptionist should have also said, so I will be having a chat with them today. Once again thank you for taking the time to comment on your recent stay with us. Kindest regards Tracey Dinan General Manager

Had a great stay here. Very reasonable price. The room was well appointed with plenty of storage, nice bedding, furnishing and drapes and plenty of electrical outlets for charging. The restaurant had a good selection on offer and the chef and bar staff were very friendly and helpful.

Needed a midpoint stopover from Queenstown to Hokitika with little choice available. The Heartland Hotel is convenient, clean, relatively cheap and suitable to rest your head.
Unfortunately thereafter it is nowhere near a standard of accommodation I would expect in this day and age. For the price I didn’t expect 5 star however the hotel was very tired, ( for older British visitors this IS Crossroads Motel in the flesh), very basic (no fridge, no air con, no safe, 3 channels on TV) and the large patio doors to the parking bays are not very secure with only a basic lock if you have valuables in the room.

Sorry to read that your stay didn't quite meet your expectations in star quality of the hotel. We do have refrigerator's in some of our room type's and are working on adding more but can always put food in our chillers. I appreciate your feedback as it certainly helps having feedback to ensure we are constantly reviewing our standards and helping our owner plan for future capital upgrades of this hotel. I was very disappointed when I arrived at this hotel, the reception was not welcoming, which I would have put aside but then I saw our room.. For $285 a night this is very overpriced and not worth the money. Room was 'neat' but pretty dirty floor and bathroom wise. Very old fashioned with a shared kitchenette/fridge in the hall. Our room required parking away in a separate area from us. No air-conditioning and plug in warehouse heaters which were not child friendly. We have been traveling for 9 days now and have stayed in 6 other places that have been excellent 3 of which were cheaper than this 1 and considerably better in all aspects.

The only thing we enjoyed was the pub meals for dinner.

HI BossGirl Thank you for taking the time to place feedback on your recent stay with us. Our sincerest apologies that we did not met your expectations this visit. We have been talking to ANZCRO with whom you made your booking with and I believe they overcharged you which has since been refunded back to you. We have our bathrooms on the list of new upgrades that have been put on hold with covid19. I also believe that reception has not charged your card with the dinner charges that were to be paid upon checkout as way of apologies. Once again our sincerest apologies Tracey

Good sized room, but not too much open in the middle of winter in Covid-19 times. The in-house restaurant was closed but the attached cafe /bar / bistro was open and all meals were available. The room was quite warm even though the outside temperatures ranged from 2 to 9 degrees C.
