We travelled on a one nights stay.. The hotel was quite welcoming and the staff is super friendly... the service is mediocrely... the pool full of kids jumping around and splashing water onto you.. (we have no kids). The room a junior suite cost us almost CHF 1000 the night.. no coffee machine, no means to darken the windows, toiletries for one person, and no cushions for the loungers in the outside space... definitely not worth the money - more 4 than 5 star.

Sunny Ticino is my favorite canton is all of Switzerland. Not only is the weather great, but also the natural beauty is equally remarkable as other parts of the country, people are more laid back than in Zürich, and when visiting Ticino, we love to eat! This canton is the perfect combination of Swiss quality food with Italian delicacies not found in the German speaking part of Switzerland. Ascona is about 3 hours by train from Zürich airport. We took the train all the way to Locarno and the hotel has a shuttle van that can pick up guests from Locarno station; after the 4km ride we arrived at the hotel which is located next to a golf course and very close to Lago Maggiore, in the middle of a manicured residential neighborhood. As much as I like nearby Lugano, I enjoy Ascona even more; it is a more upscale and picturesque quiet town attracting several foreigners who have a secondary residence there. This being the Design Hotel brand and the hotel being fully booked during my stay I did not expect an upgrade as Marriott Ambassador Elite. I was pleasantly surprised when they informed me that we got a 2-category upgrade to the Double South room type which is slightly larger than the entry level room (34 sq m vs 28 sq m) and is the highest category of rooms before suites. The quality of construction is excellent as is often the case for hotels in Switzerland and is in good condition despite the fact that it’s not a new hotel (built 1985, renovated 2009). However staff admitted that while their hardware is quite nice, it is not on par with the newly rebuilt Giardino Zürich which has stellar rooms. People who have been to Giardino Zürich should not expect the same standard for rooms in Ascona so temper your enthusiasm but quality is above average even for local standards. One oddity is that the bathtub is in the bedroom and right above it there are blinds which you can control via the wall panel. When the blinds are up it provides natural light in the bathroom, however the problem is that the door for the shower and toilet is just one single sliding panel covering one or the other and it’s not frosted glass so you can see through it. Our room had a small balcony overlooking the restaurant, fountain and pool area. The view was nice and is possibly a major difference between this room type and the first two room types although I did not see those rooms. The hotel common grounds are in mint condition and look great throughout. There are several fruits growing on site particularly lemons. There are several flowers scattered throughout the hotel grounds with lovely smell all around, which is also the case elsewhere in the Ascona village with so many flowers that the aroma is omnipresent in the air in many small streets. The main pool has several chairs available and was never fully occupied during our stay. There is also a restaurant and bar next to the pool. In the back you can also find a much smaller pool, actually looking more like a fountain. There are also a few chairs in that area and being in the back feels more private and quiet than by main pool. Breakfast in the restaurant is included in everybody’s rate so technically it’s not a Platinum benefit. At a hotel of this caliber I expected a quality breakfast, but I was impressed by the spread and especially the creative offerings. Breakfast in Switzerland with good pastries, birchermüsli, cheese, smoked salmon, etc. is a given, but there were several hot baked healthy dishes at Giardino Ascona which you would normally not find in European hotels: mangoes with coconut, strawberries with local spices, carrots with sesame seeds, papaya with raisins, etc. There were also cold salads such as couscous salad with mangoes and cashew nuts, or a chick pea salad with several fruits and nuts / seeds. I was not surprised that the smoked salmon was sublime, but I was pleased to see baby shrimps available in the buffet too which is not common in this part of the world for breakfast. Mixed juices were imaginative (similar to hot dishes), for example pinnapple and fennel juice, and another one I remember is strawberry + lemon + black pepper juice. To top it off, a luxury breakfast in Europe would be lacking without Prosecco. All in all, as much as we loved breakfast at W Verbier earlier this year, I think Giardino Ascona might even be a notch above. It was a fantastic feast every morning for us – thoroughly enjoyable. It was not just the food itself though - the restaurant setting by the water was peaceful and the restaurant not overly crowded. There are several bicycles available for hotel guests to explore the area. The bicycles are mountain bikes in good working condition, not the basic bicycles offered by some hotels where the only purpose is to move around the resort rather than go on a long ride on public roads, without having the ability to change speeds or use hand brakes. The fitness gym is in a window-less room downstairs so not the most pleasant environment but they tried to enhance it with the lit picture of a beach with palm trees at the end of the room. The equipment is top notch, for example the treadmills and elliptical machines had large glossy screens which I had only seen at Waldorf Astoria Bangkok before. The weight machines have the ability to connect to your phone – I did not use this feature but I would assume it’s to track progress in a user profile. The equipment is the most high-tech that I had seen in a hotel gym before. Service at this hotel cannot be compared to top Asian or Middle East hotels, but I would say service was very good for local standards, and without having stayed at Giardino Zürich I would not be surprised if Ascona is superior as well simply because Zürich is more like a stressed city rather than vacation-style Ascona. Staff was friendly and helpful throughout, both in the restaurant and the concierge / reception. Also housekeeping was done spotlessly and exactly at the time we asked during our breakfast time. Overall we had a lovely stay and we will definitely come back. The Ambassador Elite benefits might not be the most generous at Design Hotels but since we got a room upgrade when the hotel was full and breakfast was already included in the rate, I don’t have much to complain about. If you can afford the price difference relative to the other Giardino property in Locarno I believe you get more bang for your buck in Ascona with a better property and bigger rooms. There are very few places in the world where I would not do much shopping around before booking, but Ascona might be one of them: I will most likely return to this hotel without considering alternatives very seriously. Our stay in Ascona also makes me inclined to try Giardino Mountain in St.Moritz (Champfèr) in the future as well. Interestingly Giardino Ascona is open only 6 months per year (during the summer) while Giardino Mountain is open in the winter; most of the staff work at both hotels, they just move from one hotel to the other when the season changes.

Stayed for a long weekend with family: excellent rooms, very personal service, superb amenities - top garden kids club, nice heated outdoor pool & area, incredible bike selection (very nice and safe places to ride them in Ascona / Locarno), beach nearby, old town in walking distance, boat/s for rent - and top notch breakfast. Will come again many times over 👌😎

We had a great experience during Easter weekend at the hotel. Samuel and the rest of the team made us feel at home since the arrival. A fast check in process, great room, dinner reservations ready, easter basket for our toddler. While this is a luxury hotel is also great for families, very accomodating. The dining experience at Ecco- their 2 Michelin star restaurant- is not to be missed (book in advance). Thank you for making our family vacation really special! We are definitely coming back.
