People... this is a bit of a delightful dichotomy... but first a bit of background. So the wife wants to go away for the weekend with our boys, read 8 and 4, but... we are a day late and a dollar short. Look around... not much left but we find this Penzion Arnika. It's apparently a very popular ski area for families with children. Turns out it's exactly where we wanted to be to enjoy the north Bohemian countryside. The penzion is renovated, rustic bordering on austere, very clean and very well run. The staff is attentive... kudos to Tereza Sterbova. The penzion is not luxurious, but not intended to be so I would normally rate it no more than a 4. But... The hidden gem and total surprise here is the restaurant. Chef Zdeniak Vabrina has worked in Indonesia, Italy and France. And his cuisine absolutely reflects his diverse training. Imagine my surprise when I'm expecting typical Czech pub food only to find wonderful French Cuisine. People... I'm talking delicate mushroom bisque laced with truffle oil... steak tartare served the Czech way, with slices of thick Czech bread and fresh garlic, but seasoned and as delicate as the French serve it... a goat cheese salad with a hearty portion of goat cheese and laced with local honey, a salad dressing involving 15 ingredients which lifted simple greens to new heights... a creme brulee to rival any, a Belgian chocolate moelleux au chocolat as well as a mousse au chocolat which melted into deliciousness. The plating was not as artistic as I've seen but, given both that the chef is working alone in the kitchen and creating the tastes he is serving, this slight can be easily forgiven. And for those who may be seeking a bit more standard Czech fare, have no fear as the menu includes the same, with a lovely liver dumpling soup and baked baby back ribs with fries, read twice fried and lightly salted hand cut fries, and a salad (with the aforementioned dressing) of special note. My boys absolutely tore through their food. The penzion is good, the area filled with great family activities but the food at this establishment will seal the deal. Enough said... if you find yourself in this region of the Czech Republic... Go and Enjoy!

We stayed there at winter and enjoyed it a lot. Excellent location, clean, recently renovated! Free parking, kids ski school, rent ski... It must be very good at summer as well for hiking especially with kids. Thank you, Arnika!
