EUR 230 for one night. Sea view: with a lot of imagination behind the trees. My idea of "sea view" is very different. No airconditioning, unpleasant during warm summer weather. Room decoration/design: supposedly this was considered oligarch style in the 1990s. Didn't seem like much effort had been put into the room design since then. It's seen better days, which applies to the room as much as to the place itself. Staff seemed somewhat sedated on the first night but friendly; second day staff was plain rude, giving the place a real Soviet charme, old-style mix of inability to help and unwillingness to help. Check-out time that was communicated when asked: 10:00h (!!!). When I stated that 10am seems quite unusual for a four star places, I was told "well it's our rules, please pack right after breakfast." What appeared obvious was the absence of responsibility, someone who feels in charge and assumes real 'ownership' or proper management. There was just mediocre, uninspired staff, with bored or grumpy looks on their face. Price, service, quality, value-for-money absolutely do not match. For EUR 100 maybe, but not for EUR 230. Sorry to say: I cannot recommend the place, and upon leaving I told them quite bluntly: I certainly will not be back. Now, to end this on a positive note: breakfast was impeccable, nice sunshiny terrace, beautiful experience.

We stayed for 5 nights in Hotel Kastell in "Suite Sea Side with Balcony" wich was really nice. The room was nice and clean and everything was in good order. Beds was very comfortable. The service was good and the staff was helpfull and tried their best even with som minor language barriers.

We stayed for a week at the Hotel Kastell a year ago, but I just saw the one review of the Hotel Kastell and thought that the hotel deserves much better. It's too bad that that guest was not satisfied for whatever reason, but we were totally satisfied and liked the hotel so much that we are returning in August for *two* weeks. The hotel is in a great location right on the beach promenade. It's not in the 'heart' of Ahlbeck, but it's a short walk away. Rent or bring a bike, and then it's really easy, but not necessary. Hotel Kastell is right at the end of the promenade so it's quiet and pleasant there. There's plenty of room on the beach. The rooms are beautifully decorated in warm, attractive colors. Breakfast was very good, especially when the weather was nice and we could sit outside on the terrace, right on the promenade. The service was just what we expected and hoped for. Everyone was very nice even though we had small children along whom some might have found annoying. Perhaps the ultimate recommendation: I became very ill while I was there last year with bronchitis and a migraine that went on for a few days. But even though I had some very difficult days and otherwise might have wanted to go somewhere that would not remind me of that bad health experience, I liked the hotel so much that I wanted to come back again. We can't wait for our visit again in two weeks. You should go there, too -- you won't be disappointed!
