Detailed Reviews
My family of four stayed here in July of 2019. The castle is straight out of a fairytale. We stayed in the bridal cottage, which is two floors and a perfect set up for our family. We enjoyed the sitting room off the master bedroom, and the beds were very comfortable. The kids loved the Murphy beds! One morning we were jetlagged and late for breakfast. I visited the restaurant and they helped me prepare a tray of food to take back to the room. The staff were very sweet and friendly and took time to answer all of our questions. We opted for a day hike to St. Goar and the front desk provided us with maps and helpful tips for our day. In the evenings, the dinner was fantastic and the views over the Rhine were indescriable. Each night, a table is reserved for you, and you have a three hour window to arrive at dinner. The menu changed daily and so did your table. Sipping wine during sunset, while enjoying exquiste food with family -- life doesn't get better! Dinner substitutions were no problem and we had great wine. The castle grounds are stunning and well kept. I wish we could have spent more time in the tree houses and exploring the gardens. The man running the castle museum was very interesting. We enjoyed seeing his artwork and learning about the castle and region. The castle is on top of a hill, so be cognizant of that after a day of hiking. When you are back home, you still have an uphill 15-20 min hike to tackle! I cannot wait to return.

The overall impression I got from this castle and it's location are both magnificent. It is surrounded by an vast garden which is tastfully designed and invites you to stay for longer. My room had an ancient atmosphere yet with the comfort of modern hotel rooms. Just the wifi was a bit slow and there was a lack of plugs to connect my gadgets. Dinner and breakfast were both excellent. I would have appreciated that people would wear masks indoors and that the air of the restaurant would be refreshed regularlay which was not the case at all. So I hope there will be no bad covid memory from this wonderful stay.

Staying at Auf Schönburg is always a highlight when we visit Europe. This visit was terrific, as usual. We loved our room, the castle itself, the delicious dinners and breakfasts (now in the lovely new breakfast room), the tower museum, the gardens, the genuine welcome and the excellent service, especially in the dining areas. The extra little touches are always appreciated. Fluffy robes, in room sherry and fine toiletries are first class. We really appreciated that our favorite table request was fulfilled. The many course dinner with paired wines was perfect.
Only one suggestion, perhaps guests who arrive or depart by train could be picked up or dropped off at the station by the hotel. We appreciated that the reception requested a taxi for us but since the taxi driver lives in another town, certainty of transport would be appreciated.

The hotel is beautiful. The only problem is their booking agent is Expedia. I somehow received a reservation in March that i did not make. In March i was and am in Dallas, Texas. I had reservations in July. I have tried and tried to cancel the March reservation. With Expedia you cannot talk or communicate with a live person. The hotel sent me the booking number but the number will not work. I have spent days trying to cancel the reservation now costing me over $200.00. It is a disgrace what has happened. The hotel tells me that Expedia is going to call me but they never do. I just do not know what to do. The hotel employees have tried to help but nothing works with Expedi

They said we would be refunded back in May because they were closed due to Covid, then they refused. I opened a dispute with my credit card, then they lied and said I had cancelled the reservation! They just out and out lied! What kind of heartless, greedy people take advantage of others during a global pandemic! We were 8 travelers, most retired on fixed incomes, and now the Burghotel has over $1,000 of our money and we have nothing. They should be ashamed of themselves, but then, you actually need a conscious to feel shame, and they obviously have none. Unless you like greedy, heartless, liars, consider staying somewhere else

Response from Hermann Huettl, Inhaber at Burghotel Auf Schönburg
Responded Sep 23, 2020
Dear NewYorkSunWorshipper, we understand that you are disappointed that you could not stay with us this year but we are really shocked to be called greedy and heartless and liars in such a hateful way and feel extremely offended. We stand by a given word and have refunded down payments to hundreds of guests to which they were due because they booked with us directly with cancellation deadlines or booked refundable stays with booking providers, and we have rebooked numerous reservations to other dates if desired. This was and is not easy for us as a hotel and employer with responsibility of the livelihood of our 50 employees but we always stayed fair. You booked a non-refundable stay via booking.com which clearly informs you when booking that this reservation, for whatever reason, cannot be canceled later. Our hotel was open again at the time of your planned arrival (which at times was not clear and therefore apparently gave cause to some misunderstanding in our extensive correspondence), we understood, however, that you could not travel and offered you to change your booking date to the future without any extra charge, which you declined. Yes, you were unable to visit us, yes we are in a global pandemic and yes times are rough for all of us at the moment and yes we, too, are very unhappy about conditions that we can hardly influence and that make it difficult for us to survive as a hotel and restaurant in these challenging times. We very much hope that in a quiet moment you may reconsider the matter with a little less bias and may also be able to understand our position. With best wishes Hermann Hüttl

My wife and I came back to Schloss Schoenburg after a great stay in 2017, this time 4 days, and we enjoyed ourselves just as much. The Castle itself has a wonderful story, ambience and surroundings - in vineyards, overlooking the Rhein, with great hiking trails. We rented bicycles and rode to Koblenz (approximately 40-50 km) along the river. We also hiked to Maria Ruh, a viewpoint across the Lorelei Rock, and another castle at St. Goar on beautiful trails above the River. One evening we drove to Johannisberg for the Rheingau music festival, delightful Beethoven sonata recitals. The hotel rooms give an "old castle" flair, staff provides wonderful service, the kitchen is excellent and we loved the Riesling wines in the area. One of our favorite places.

Lifetime highlight! The views of the hills and vineyards, the shingles, and the authentic furnishings made this the “best of” our trip. Each morning’s complimentary breakfast was delicious and plentiful, and our room was beautifully furnished and clean. Being able to take a hot bath with a leaded glass window cracked for fresh, cool air was wonderful. Wish we would’ve stayed there longer!

What a great stay at an historic hotel. The furnishings are fantastic and room sizes are priced according to size and view. One of our rooms #15 was very small with no view but the other #37 was much larger with outside entrance with a little terrace with table. The facilities are great for little strolls and exploring and the minibar is complimentary. The staff was helping ful and especially Herman who worked with me nearly an hour on a difficult printing of tickets for the Rhine in Flames cruise.

It was fantastic. We celebrated a birthday at Schönburg. We couldn't stop being amazed. We enjoyed the location and the wonderful view of the castle, the warm hospitality inside and outside and the suite tastefully furnished with old furniture and of course the lovingly maintained garden with its cosy corners to relax in, which is reserved for hotel guests. The very extensive grounds contain surprising, tranquil corners, sculptures, beautiful seating, a pond and a garden chess set.

We had the most beautiful stay in a tower room (Turmzimmer No. 22). There were incredible little pieces and touches within the room that all screamed medieval vibes. Four poster bed, big bath with gold accents, beautiful leaded windows with stunning views, and a tiny little balcony not for the faint hearted! We ate dinner in the restaurant, also stunning, and then breakfast also delicious. We got a little memento medieval style poster given to us as a gift to commemorate our stay. Beautiful touch!

Dear Katheribnehor,
The golf buggy is availible from the parking place to the hotel daily from 8.00 to 12.00 and from 15.00 to 19.30 hours. You can aither give us a call when you arrive or one of you can come to the reception desk to tell us.

Best regards
Family Hüttl
I haven’t. We stayed in room 11 I believe. The view was amazing and the room is really good sized.
Which one? It's about an hour or hour and a half train ride to Dusseldorf, which is where I flew from. I did not bring a car - the train is the way to go in the Mittelrhein.
We were not asked which dining room we wanted; however, I think I would have had a difficult time choosing. All the dining rooms were quite lovely. I wouldn't be surprised if they would allow you to choose, however, as long as you ask early enough (before they have all the tables assigned.)

Chalfont, Pennsylvania, United States56 contributions24 helpful votesWhich of the rooms would be most suitable for a family of four (our kids will be 8 when we go)?
I think kids would really enjoy this place - great views, delicious meals, friendly and attentive staff, and all the bells and whistles of a castle! We stayed in rooms 32 and 33, which each easily accommodated 2 adults, so they would be more than adequate for two eight-year olds. If space is your main concern, choose Rhinelanderzimmer no 34. It can accommodate 4 people. For the largest square meters, then opt for no 30 and 31 (largest at 55 square meters). Don't miss the gardens! Enjoy.
