This magnificent Quinta (farmhouse) was built by an Englishman in the late 1800s. The house is built of fine granite, partly into a terrace. The high ceilings on the ground floor at over 4 meters keep the house cool even on the hottest of days. The original features have been retained in a beautifully authentic restoration. The 3 suites located in the top of the house incorporate the original pine beams, giving a true "wow" factor. We have our own working winery and take wine tours to the Dao and Douro wine regions.

It is an over used cliché arriving and guests and leaving as friends. This is one venue where I think it’s an accurate description of the hospitality. He house is an imposing stone building overlooking the river and vineyard, rooms are large and our suite comprised of a lounge complete with complimentary wine, beer and homemade port, a shower room and comfortable bedroom and balcony.
Hugh and Jane are warm friendly hosts and nothing is too much trouble for them. I highly recommend eating in at least one night as Jane serves a tasty comforting 3 course meal while Hugh keeps you watered with a selection of their vineyard produced wines. The dinner party atmosphere is fun and the conversation flows as freely as the wine.
Quinta dos Tres Rios is away from the crowds and you can chill out for a few days or explore the local area. The website has several well researched self guided trips and we explored Coimbra and nearby roman ruins and Aviero on the coast on our departure. A nearby abandoned railway provides a walking and cycle track which is well worth a 45 min stroll to the first stop a proper local bar and restaurant in an old station building. The more adventurous can cycle nearly 50km end to end.
In a world of airbnb, keyboxes and remote codes Quinta dos Tres Rios is a return to proper hospitality and I have to admit new friends.

This is an amazing place, well worth a visit if you're anywhere nearby (or even not that near). Hugh and Jane are generous, caring hosts, and the accomodations (spacious and charming rooms, suites, and common areas) are exceptional. On a drizzly November evening, relaxing on vast sofas in front of a roaring fireplace in the downstairs lounge was especially appealing. I hope to be able to return, though if the property is sold (it is currently on the market) and the B&B operation discontinued, there may not be another opportunity. Either way, I'll remember it fondly.

I picked the Quinta dos 3 rios to stay with close family and friends during a family celebration in Parada de Gonta. We stayed 3 days in late july. Hugh and Jane prooved to be exaclty what we expected - welcoming, very friendly and always ready to make us feel happy and comfortable. The place is amazing, always in close contact to the nature. Vineyard is beautiful and the rooms are incredible. For me the space is impressive, large rooms, classic style, everything in wood. The food was very very good, delicious! and the "house" wine is an excelent extra!
We loved the experience and the group is planning to return!

I have stayed at Quinta dos Tres Rios more than once. The standard of accommodation is superb, and the advice on the local area is second to none. I would recommend to anyone staying in this area of Portugal

Hugh and Jane could not have been more lovely. We felt as though we were reconnecting with old friends. The accommodations splendid, the dinner each night divine, and the wines were a real treat. Hugh taught us all about how the wine is made, from the tour of the vines to the visit to the production site. We can’t wait to go back. Thank you!

As soon as we arrived, we felt as if we were part of the family. Very nice landscape, calm and relaxing. Old Quinta renovated by hosts Jane and Hugh. To share dinner with hosts and guests was a wonderful experience, a must do. Hugh is very proud of his wines and port. We had the chance to go hand picking grapes one morning on one of Hugh's friend property and I must say it was THE highlight of our trip to Portugal, we will never forget it! Do not hesitate to choose that Quinta, you won't regret.

Any visit to Portugal needs to include Porto, and any trip to Porto needs to include a road trip along the Douro River valley (at least as far as PinhĂŁo). And then it goes without saying that any trip that far needs to include at least a night at Qunita dos Tres Rios to immerse yourself in a slice of the beautiful scenery which you have been travelling through. The owners will take care of you in elegant B&B style (dinner optional) in luxurious rooms... youi'll be torn between experiencing the amazing valley and vineyards and staying indoors to savour your private living room.

Sometimes when traveling we've happened across a place where we decide we will always stay there when we visit again: we have a convent in Rome that has earned this singular distinction. On our recent visit to Portugal, not only did we find another such place, but one that has us wanting to return specifically to visit them.

Hugh and Jane's quinta just outside the little village of Parada de Gonta was fantastic, from the attention to details in the rooms to the estate and grounds and the views across the valley and the evening meals with Hugh and Jane and fellow travelers. But the best part of all is Hugh's wines which they produce on the estate.

While we were there we also took day trips to nearby Coimbra, Conimbriga (Roman ruins), a beach on a nearby river, and took Hugh's tour of the Douro Valley (which is a don't-miss activity). Most memorable though was just relaxing and walking their estate. We are already planning to return next year around grape harvest time :-)

I am ambivalent about writing this review. On the one hand Hugh and Jane deserve a praising review. On the other hand there are some places so special that you want to keep them to yourself lest there e no room the next time you travel. But I will go with just deserts. Simply put, this place is special. My wife and I have stayed at many fine B&B's; even among this select group this is one of the nicest experiences we have had. It begins with Hugh and Jane; one could not ask for more hospitable hosts. It includes an absolutely lovely suite, including a bottle of Quinta made wine and a carafe of Quinta made port in our room upon our arrival. There was a spacious living room and an equally nice bedroom with a very comfortable bed, and except for a few dogs barking in the distance one could not ask for a more quiet setting for sleep. And don't fail to to take a meal or two or three with Hugh and Jane. The setting is lovely, the conversation flows and the food is wonderful; almost all home grown and well cooked. Indeed, the drink before dinner, the unlimited wine during the meal and the house made port afterwards in any restaurant would, by themselves, cost more than the entire meal. Breakfasts were the same special culinary experience. We are not the kind of people who prefer or require pastries, pancakes or even eggs to make a breakfast, so some may not be as enamoured of the breakfast as we were, but from our perspective this was about the very best breakfast we have had in our travels, with the cheeses, meats, jams, fresh fruit, bread, yogurt, coffee. much of which was home grown or home made. It was all halthy and outstanding; we even took a picture of the breakfast spreadto remember it by.
If you need guidance about where to go or what to do, Hugh and Jane will provide as much guidance as you desire. The setting of the house and the area are lovely, although (and this is the only slight downside) it is not as close to the heart of the Douro Valley wine region as those who wish to tour some of the best known wineries might like. For this reason, we also booked at another B&B closer to the area we most wanted to visit. But even though the place we found is also deserving of five stars Hugh and Jane's B&B is a cut above. It deserves more stars (or filled circles) than trip advisor allows one to give. We would return in a heartbeat. Thank you Hugh and Jane.

Accommodating 11 adults, 13 kids and 2 dogs is a test for any Quinta! That many people will reveal any flaws in the operations and I am happy to report that Hugh and Jan were flawless. They provided the whole lot of us with a weekend that was rich and memorable. They did so much more than just welcome us as clients and guests, they really made us, and our children, feel as though we were at home. Everything was wonderful: the rooms, the food, the wine (especially the rose'). The kids loved exploring the grounds with their families and playing with all the toys that Hugh and Jan so wisely prepared! The environment they nurture in their quinta is so unusual and so rich. I found myself wishing that I were in their family and could live there all the time. Their attentiveness and kindness really made me feel that I must be one of their favorite guests! Then, as I read the guestbook upon departing, I realized that they have brilliantly managed, in a very authentic manner, to make all their guests feel that way. Whether you are traveling with a group, or alone, I have no doubt that you will find your experience with Hugh and Jan to be refreshing and (not to overuse the word) rich!
