My first choice when i'm in Chinandega.
The architecture of building is beautiful and keeps with the Nicaraguan style. The service was excellent - especially Antonio who welcomed us for a delicious breakfast with his infectious smile every morning! Housekeeping were helpful in every way and with Osman always welcoming with his wonderful smile and caring nature, we had a fabulous stay! All the staff paid real attention to detail.
The hotel is wonderful and I would definitely recommend it and will definitely return there next time I visit. It really only lacks one thing to make it perfect - a visible manager. Even though the staff are brilliant, it would be nice to see a senior person chatting with guests, as well as a visible presence of someone in authority. Perhaps my expectations are too great - but in England (where we live) this is necessary in all 5 star hotels.
All in all, it was my best stay ever in Nicaragua and I look forward to staying at Los portales in the near future. Congratulations to all involved in making our stay luxurious and with many happy memories!!
Having visited Managua and stayed in many hotels there (Princess, Intercontinental, Crowne Plaza, Barcelo and Holiday Inn) it is the BEST hotel in nicaragua! Thank you :-)
Nice bar and the food in the restaurant was good. Service was not. While staff were very polite they had no concept of how to serve a meal and were surprised that serving the starter after the main course was considered odd. All food took over an hour and a half to arrive. Better to go to the nearby pizza/chicken place.
It's an OK place to stop if you have to but why stay here? It's not even close to the centre of Chinadega, much less to any place of interest.
Breakfast is basic in an unprepossessing room.
Food in general was pretty good, although I only had either an evening snack in bar or meal as part of seminar, so can't judge the restaurant. However, they do serve plenty of ice cold Tona; the local beer - which is essential!

There is very little for an American tourist to do in this little town. There are tours of the rum factory and a tour of one of the many volcanoes. A casino is about 500 yds away. Other than that, I would not walk down the street after dark, as there are some sketchy areas nearby. However, there is an armed private security guard at the entrance, so I never worried about security at the hotel.
The rooms were clean, comfortable, and quiet. The beds were very nice. The room was cleaned every day by 9 am, and the floors mopped. We got up at 3:30 am, and returned about 9, so the heavy drapes were useful in taking a much needed siesta.
Service was good. I only had one issue while there--my in-room safe's battery ran down, and they promptly replaced it. My friend in the next room ordered several buckets of ice, and had room service one night, all to his satisfaction. The pool and common areas were impeccably clean.
Wifi worked good, but it did tend to disconnect after an hour or two. Cable tv service was spotty, which they blamed on the cable provider. Only 2 English channels--BBC and CNN. Tv's were 30 ish inch flat screens. All rooms had a/c. There is a little bar at the front of the hotel, but service there was iffy.
We ate the pre-arranged meal at the hotel restaurant in the courtyard for every meal but one. Breakfast was great. Bacon, eggs, pastries, fruit, pinto gallo, coffee/juice. For lunch and dinner, we had steak, salmon, roasted chicken. Everything was nicely prepared, with large portions. My friend had lobster via room service, and said it was excellent. There is a little pizza/roasted chicken restaurant in front of the hotel that was great.
I would definitely stay here again.
"There is no elevator, so the first floor is a lot easier, especially if you have luggage."Read full review
