This lovely old building is in the heart of the town and oozes character. Run by a frenchified American family, they run a very friendly maison. Their kitchen produces great meals and breakfast includes superb breads and delicious homemade jams and conserves. Be warned that there is no lift and the bedrooms are up steep stairs.

Stayed one night on way south. You can't park that near so head for free parking and walk. This is, as others have said, an old building with a friendly couple and is definitely 'quirky'. If you want a 3 star hotel, don't book. Our room was large, had en suite, quiet and the owners offered to provide anything we... More

We looked forward to our two nights booked at La Porte Rouge, the reviews and photos led me to believe this was a beautifully cared for and stylish ancient house of character. We likely had the poorest experience, partly due to this room having no en suite, but also a connecting door to a family room. It was noisy, too... More

We stayed here one night en route to La Rochelle. We arrived by car and although there is no parking as the property is on a pedestrianised street, we were able to park one street over in a car park near the cathedral. We arrived to a warm welcome from the owner James and his family, including their very friendly... More

If you're looking for an authentic French experience then you can't go wrong with La Porte Rouge. This beautiful B&B is located in a 300 year old building in the Rue Jacobins. The room was enormous and comfortable, food was excellent, the beds great and the hot water plentiful. We stayed for almost two weeks and it became our home... More

Booked to stay one night to attend a wedding nearby. Arrived very late and stressed to a lovely warm welcome from James, he walked out to meet us after getting repeatedly lost around the one way system. James has a lovely manner and soon made us feel relaxed. The hotel is a beautiful building with lots of quirky features, not... More

We stayed in La Port Rouge for one night in early April 2015. The property is very conveniently located that one could walk to restaurants, bars, shops, main street etc in Saintes, yet it is tucked away in a beautiful and quiet street. The hostess is very friendly (love their dog!) and the interior is quirky (I understand she is... More

This was a great find. It's a B&B with 4 rooms on the 3rd level of a charming, well position stately home. The owners spoke perfect English, (husband from USA) and looked after us with great care considering we had 3 very young children. The room was huge and featured a fabulous bathroom with claw foot bath. Breakfast was lovely... More
