Well we arrived in Chatelaillon for a few nights beach break, having loved La Rochelle, but hated the way every bar operated a thievings policy. That is an extra 5 euro here, 10 euro there, each time it came to paying the bill. Never a detailed receipt, so beware and check your total amounts. We arrived at the Hotel Victoria, one night booked with Booking.com, and the second by telephone for the same agreed price. No rip offs here or so we thought. The owner was so friendly and helpful, giving us a false sense of security. On arrival the first thing I did while checking in, was to confirm room prices; The second night room price was 10 euros higher than agreed. I argued at first, and the owner apologised and admitted it was her mistake. I paid the bill the evening before we left. I thought about it over dinner and my partner emphasised that it wasn’t right. I know this is boring, but this is for everyones good. 2 nights at 68 euros + city tax (which has a cap of €1.50 max), total should have been a max of €139. I was charged €157 euros. So an increase of 18 euros. I do think that if it wasn’t for the past experiences in the area, I wouldn’t have queried it. But I did, and asked for a detailed bill, which was reluctantly given to me. I found that the Booking.com first night had 10% vat added, which is never the case with booking, and the second night still had the extra 10 euros per night on it, but for some strange reason; with no vat. With the city tax of 3.50 euros, it came to €157. After a confrontation, She did return 10 euros in cash to me, but nevertheless the point is that she tried to rip me off. ≈ Reviewing the actual quality of the hotel now≈:- The hotels position to the beach and the town centre was really very good. The room wasn’t great, but it was clean. The toilet didn’t work unless you took the top off the cistern, and put your hand in the water to manipulate the ballcock. I won’t stay there again. I suggest you avoid it too, unless you like an argument. I am told refurbishment will take place after the season. I am sure it will reflect on the prices, but thats just an assumption based on my experience.
