Please don't be put off by the old negative reviews. I've been visiting Greece for over 30 years, it was my fifth time in Ios and I had a fantastic time here.

The comments about the steps up to the hotel are correct: the first time you arrive, you can see Hotel Poseidon easily from the port, up on the hillside behind a couple of buildings. How to get to it is not obvious, but the steps are down a passage between AutoUnion car rental and Enigma Taverna. The steps aren't fun, but not that bad as long as you don't have mobility problems. What you get in return are great views over the port and a quieter setting.

The hotel itself is typically Greek, with functional rooms, but clean and well-maintained by the family owners. I received a warm greeting from Marina and was shown to my room overlooking the pool. The room was quite small, but fine for me as a solo traveller.

The WiFi in the hotel was a bit slow and occasionally stopped working, which could certainly be improved, but it's not a bad thing to spend less time on my devices and more time relaxing!

The pool is quite small but big enough for a refreshing dip in between sunbathing. You can't really do laps as the shallow end has built-in seats for the swim-up bar, but again it's not really a 'swimming' pool. There aren't many sunloungers around the pool itself, and those nearest the pool tended to lose the sun early in the afternoon due to their position, but there is also a terrace above the pool bar with more sunloungers that get the full sun well into the evening. The pool bar prices are okay, but there's a supermarket just a couple of buildings away where you can get big 500ml cans of beer for about €1.80 instead of €4 for a 330ml at the pool.

The hotel's location at the port is ideal (despite the steps, which you get used to) with all the amenities you could need nearby: supermarket, tavernas, cafes and shops. Peri Anemon is the place to go for cheap gyros and snack food. Buongiorno cafe is great for morning coffee and snacks. Try Corali Kitchen and Tropicana Bar at Gialos Beach for good food and drinks.

The bus to Chora and Mylopotas Beach departs from the port every 15 minutes in high season and is less than 5 minutes walk from the hotel, so it's super easy to get out and about. You can also walk back from Chora down a stepped path, but I wouldn't recommend walking up it during the day - it's sweaty work!

Overall, I had a great time at Hotel Poseidon and would definitely recommend it for an affordable stay on Ios.

Crazy hotel, comfortable and spacious rooms. Super good staff but above all Marina, she speaks Italian and is super good and kind.
Highly recommended.
Convenient location for moving around the city, spectacular swimming pool that allows you to do many dives.

The owners Marina and Spiro are probably the loveliest and most welcoming staff I’ve ever encountered at a hotel. Not only did they go above and beyond to make sure we were completely happy with everything at the hotel, they genuinely made us feel at home with their classic Greek hospitality.

The hotel is in a great location - 1 minute walk from the port and around heaps of good restaurants.

Would definitely recommend!

I cant believe the bad reviews that people have written about this hotel. I'm guessing some of them have never actually been and just saw photos! We had an amazing stay. The owners, Spiros and Marina, were the most helpful and friendliest people I met on my trip.
There are stairs to get into the hotel... but that is part of the culture, charm and environment of the Greek Islands! It is quaint, sweet and full of the true Greek essence - Family focused, great hospitality and all the reasons to visit such a place rich in traditional culture. The stairs are well worth every second spent at the hotel. With views of the beach and stunning surrounds. The bar and pool were phenomenal. So relaxing. We met other great people there due to the comfortable and friendly environment that Marina created for everyone.
The rooms and clean and comfortable. Clearly a lot of effort, care and consideration go into making this a stay to remember.
We had a great time.
Spiros and Marina - thank you so much for everything. Wish you every luck for the rest of the season.

We stayed at this hotel in August. The location is great really close to the port, the structure is beautiful and very comfortable. Marina and her husband are the icing on the cake, yes and created a beautiful relationship!
We will definitely return, the island of Ios has kidnapped us.

Stayed at this great little hotel near the Ios port (3min walk) for 3 nights. Reception staff were lovely and very helpful. Breakfast was great, served on a beautiful patio by a sweet little Greek lady (which I think turns into a self-serve buffet in the busy period), rooms were very large and clean with great large balconies with fantastic views over the port but the best part was the pool. Its beautful and so clean with lots of sun-lounges, a sun-deck, showers/toilets, a great pool-bar and a lovely bar-man called Andreas. We really enjoyed our stay here. It wasnt anythng flash but for just a clean base to sleep, have a bite to eat in the morning, somehere to cool off in the afternoon and so close to the great taverns at the port, you cant go past this place. They also kept our luggage for us for hours after we checked out.

After reading other reviews I was a little worried.
Turns out it was a great stay. People were complaining of all the stairs & unpleasant staff.
Yes there are 50 stairs to get to the hotel but it does have a lift for your luggage! All you have to do is walk up the stairs to reception then they do the rest. Staff were nothing but friendly to me, I can’t fault them.
Wifi does not work in your room, but it works if you stand outside your room or at the pool etc.
A/C was great too.
Location was great in regards to being close to the port. But it’s a little out the way to the main village where all the main shops and bars/ pubs are.
There is a public bus right near hotel but as the busses don’t run past midnight you have to walk back from the village. It wasn’t all bad tho because there are stairs (right near sweet Irish pub) from town which are all downhill & take you back down to port if you miss the last bus, it only takes about 15 or 20 mins :)
I would recommend this hotel !

The hotel was not at all what it looked like on the website , rooms were small and gross. Wifi was only in the lobby and data doesint work in the rooms either. The staff did not help at all when we tried to cancel our reservation and the manager was rude.

We stayed for 1 week in this nice hotel and enjoyed the whole facility which includes very comfortable rooms and a beautiful balcony view of the port and the small village of Ormos. The family who runs the hotel is very welcoming and anxious to fulfil every request of the guests.
There are several good restaurants within 1 minute walk and a large supermarket.
We strongly recommend this hotel to all our friends who plan to visit the island. It is sure great value for the money.

Well furnished established hotel in Ios port. 70 steps up to reception can be daunting however! Rooms are lovely, wood trimmed and spacious. The flat screen TV has English language BBC channel. The bathrooms have shelf space and large showers with lots of hot water. The view is terrific, and there is a great pool. Prices were reasonable, espcially for the space and the view.
The downside is the hike up the steps. There are good restaurants in the port and an active marina, but it is not necessarily the first choice for location among visitors to Ios. However, the bus service is frequent and convenient, and the hike from a night out in the Villagis IS downhill --until you get to those hotel steps. I did not try the breakfast, but the dining area was spacious, and there seemed to be a bar.
