We arrived at around 9 PM after landing in Tromso, getting a rental car, seeing the Arctic Cathedral then heading out to Sommaroy. The drive was enchanting and incredibly quiet and I'm really glad we decided to head out vs. staying in Tromso. The kind young lady working behind the desk recommended a 2 min drive to a fantastic spot to enjoy the sunset. (Photos were so incredible, they broke Insta). The hotel itself is located on a delightful property built around a small bay with the ability to walk down a staircase from the main hotel to a beach and walk into the Norwegian Sea. (It's cold... about 55 degrees F, but a quick and easy return into the hotel and directly into the sauna!). Breakfast was delicious with a standard full spread (eggs, bacon/sausage, sliced deli meats, juices, coffee, several types of bread/pastry, and more herring than you can shake your hand at). I wished we'd had more time to stay and book a hot tub, but we had to catch the ferry to Senja. I'd definitely consider returning to see the aurora - the location is perfect as it's away from any light and there are many indoor places to hang out with windows looking out and up at the aurora. Internet was fast to boot - I was able to upload about 1.2K photos (each ~17 MB in size) to Google Photos in about two hours.

This hotel is beautifully situated on Hillesøya, approximately a one-hour drive from Tromsø. The surrounding landscape is this awesome characteristic coastal landscape of Northern Norway with sea view, mountains, islands, all these beautiful white beaches and heather covered hills. There are wonderful hiking trails nearby and this is the perfect place to spend some time out in the nature. What we did miss was the afternoon and evening sun. I am not even sure you can see the midnight sun from the hotel area (we felt asleep before midnight, so I can’t tell), but there is an island with a huge hill at the west side of the hotel, shadowing for the evening sun, which we thought was kind of sad in a sunny summer evening. The hotel was OK, with spacious hotel rooms and quite modern bath rooms, but we found the interior a bit dark, both in the rooms and in the reception/restaurant area. We had a delicious vegetarian pasta in the evening and enjoyed the breakfast, which was a quite average in regard to assortment and variety. Pretty much what you would expect in a Norwegian hotel, no more, no less.

Our cruise ship shore excursion selected this hotel's restaurant as its lunch stop. There are separate dining rooms although the buffet is served in one location. Each dining room had beautiful views of the small lake. A variety of smoked fish (salmon and another type of fish), seafood (whale, grilled shrimp, fish) and meat (including reindeer, reindeer tongue, grilled chicken, pork) is offered as are salads, pastas, soups, chicken and pork. For dessert, several flavors of mousse and macaroons (strawberry, vanilla, lavender, licorice/anise) were available. One of the best features of the hotel is the location. So beautiful and peaceful.

We were accommodated in the new wing which is newly built with modern furniture and bathroom. We had a nice view from our room. We had buffet breakfast included which had a lot of options to choose from. Overall I would say that it was worth it.

As part of our tour of the area, we stopped for lunch here. Beautiful location and facility with neat outside places. It was pretty quiet. Service was great and the food was good. Can’t comment on accommodations, but a great stop as you’re out seeing Sommaroy.
