We stayed here in a historical room for one night...and what a lovely experience that was! The toilet and shower were in the end of the corridor, but I had the ladies all to myself. The deco was beautifuly done. I felt like a queen! The hotel itself is worth visiting, even if you are not planning to stay the... More

This hotel has really rised beautifully from years of breakdown. Nice park outside and beautiful lobby and recreation roms. Very friendly straff that makes us want to book a stay in the future. A perle of a hotel from 1894 very nicely restored.

The way to arrive to this nice hotel is by boat on the Telemark Canal. Having enjoyed the scenery from Lunde, you are in the mood for the fairy-tale feeling you get when entering the 1890-style hall. This is a hotel without TV and telephone in the rooms, so you really feel going back in time. The rooms are well... More

Thank you very much for your kind words. We apologize for not having Tomato juice, everyone loves a good bloody mary. As far as the shower, it must have been a mystery, it works perfect now. Can our own ghost Elisabeth Greenfiels have anything to do with it? =). I am glad you told us anyway. We hope you get... More

We were in Dalen to visit relatives and decided to stay here. The staff goes out of their way to make your stay as comfortable as possible. They even have a couple of fishing passes they will borrow to you if you want to fish the nearby river for trout. Otherwise you would have to go to the tourist office... More

What a place! What a building! And what service! Not enough excamation marks on my keyboard to express how I feel about this place. With a starting point like this excuisite building from 1894, your expectations skyrocket before even entering the place. With a package like ours (the culinary packet) we were treated like royals from the moment we arrived.... More

This wooden hotel is worth visiting if you are in Telemark, a great place to rest either you came here by foot, bike, car or one of the two boats on the telemark Kanal, Victoria or Henrik Ibsen. We stayed over one night after taking the 10 hour canal trip from Skien and we could instantly feel the historic glamour... More

The historic Dalen Hotel is not a luxury hotel, but it is bound to give you an experience of a lifetime. I would have loved to give it 5 stars in this review, but that wouldn't have been fully deserving, since it still has some potential to get even better. The staff members are, for the most, genuinely friendly, smiling... More

My wife and I drove two hours into the middle of Telemark, Norway, on scenic roads, with the trip culminating in a series of switchbacks down a mountainside to the west end of a lake called Bandak and the Dalen Hotel. We were warned that it would be a beautiful location and an amazing 120 year old building that greatly... More

Stayed here with my wife and our dog. Called ahead and asked if we could bring him. No problem. The room itself was nice, perhaps a bit small considering we had a dog along. But that was down to us and our choice of bringing him. The room was not ideally located since it was rigth to the kitchen. Which... More

One can hardly believe that such a place exists at the end of a mountain lake in Norway; it is akin to the magic of the Fairmont at Lake Louise in Alberta, Canada, but with far more history. The hotel has had some rough years since the Nazis raped it during WWII, and it actually closed for over 10 years... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Dalen Hotel is a fairytale hotel, build in 1894 in grand romantic style with dragonheads, towers and balconys. The paper "Varden" wrote in 1894: "The new elegant furnished Hotel at Dalen, at the top of the Bandak waters, is now ready to recieve guests".After early golden days and later years of decay the hotel was in 1994, after years of restauration finished to welcome its guests again, all restored back to its original beauty. It has the same soul, calmness, peace and atmosphere as the wooden castle that opened for more than 110 years ago. ... more   less
