Dalen Hotel is a fairytale hotel, build in 1894 in grand romantic style with dragonheads, towers and balconys. The paper "Varden" wrote in 1894: "The new elegant furnished Hotel at Dalen, at the top of the Bandak waters, is now ready to recieve guests".After early golden days and later years of decay the hotel was in 1994, after years of restauration finished to welcome its guests again, all restored back to its original beauty. It has the same soul, calmness, peace and atmosphere as the wooden castle that opened for more than 125 years ago.

We had a wonderful stay in this classic hotel with great hospitality. Unique location and great views. Superb restaurant.
Minor points are the relatively small rooms. And we recommend not to book room 1 (which we had) as this room is located next to the kitchen with lots of noise out of the kitchen in the evening and night.

Arrived Dalen Hotel early in the evening after a long drive that day. Perfect location of the hotel, the garden and surroundings are perfect with the English garden on the back. The staff is friendly and wish you welcome, the hotel is built in 1894 and they try to keep the atmosphere like that. In the evening at 10pm they tell a story about the history of the hotel and how this hotel where a modern hotel back then. The food in the restaurant where perfect, and so the breakfast in the morning. The rooms can be a bit small (standard double room), but you have the option to select a bigger one. We where there together with 3 other couples last weekend. Can be recommended, but bring a credit card with you as the prices are on the higher end..

This is a hotel that is run by people who care about the hotel, its history, and the experience that guests have. We stayed for one night and our stay was a delight from start to finish. The hotel is exquisitely restored - a step into the past, though not at the expense of comfort. A proper hotel with the little extras that are missing from most modern hotels.
We stayed in a deluxe room with balcony. The room was charming and the bed comfortable. Dinner, made by the michelin star chef was amazing, served by attentive staff.
At 10 o'clock the guests gathered in the charming old lounge for to hear the hotels manager tell the story of the hotel. It is an entertaining and eventful history.
After a leisurely breakfast and a walk up to Rui (amazing views over the valley!), we rounded off our trip with afternoon teas - lovely sandwiches, cakes and fresh scones.
The staff were friendly, helpful and available, throughout our stay. We left the charming Dalen Hotel feeling uplifted and hoping to visit again.

We booked the Tower room weeks in advance only to enter the room and find it was already occupied! We were then offered a much smaller room as an “upgrade” before finally being offered an upgraded room. This should never happen at any hotel and it squandered what little time we had for our stay. A meaty malle (cod) main course at dinner was a bit disappointing. Halibut or sea bass would have been better with the delicately balanced meal.

Dear Mr Lynn. I’m sorry to hear your experience did not reach up to what is expected from any hotel and that our efforts to make up for the mishap at check in were insufficient. We have contacted you by email and will be looking forward to get in contact with you. Kind regards, Filip Åbom General manager Dalen Hotel

The hotel itself is a masterpiece late 19th Century Dragon-styie archi techure that lives up to its Five stars in every respect, in rooms, decoratios, furnishing, food.

But what makes it special is the service-mindedness and friendliness of its staff.

Being a masterpiece of restoration and heritagf preservation there are no lefts. But that does not matter as the receptionist carrier your luggage to your room.

My I only complaint is the dining room. It literally requires you to dress for dinner.
And I did not pack my dinner jacket.

Dalen Hotel is located in a beautiful valley in a idyllic town. Staff was polite and friendly upon arrival and made sure we had everything we needed.

For our first meal we had afternoon tea. This was a bit disappointing as the table was not cleaned between setings and sticky raspberry jam from the last serving spoiled our cutlery. The service was very slow.

The room was nice and cosy with charm. This added to the historical atmosphere of the hotel.

For dinner the restaurant had trouble serving two different wines at the same table so we had to drink the same wine by the glass. This was very disappointing as we love wine and wanted to try different pairings. Otherwise the food was good.

A nice stay but far from our expectations especially in regards of the service.

Love our stay at Dalen Hotel, I think this might be my favorite hotel in Norway.

We felt like we were actors in a costume drama like Bridgerton or Downtown Abbey. The Historic hotel is just so we'll maintained, that you get the feeling it's been in operation constantly since it opened in 1894.

Dalen Hotel is three hours from Oslo, situated in a quiet Fjord, with amazing food and a stress free environment. There is a must visit Sauna a 5 min walk from the hotel, down by the fjord: Soria Moria Sauna

The best thing with the hotel is the dedicated staff. They are quirky, interesting, dedicated and very knowledgeable. Loved them. They also serve amazing cocktails, one of the best ala carte breakfasts in Norway and impeccable dinners.

We will return soon and bring friends! ❤️

Very pleased with the dinner, breakfast, sauna package and the hotel grounds.
What could be better:
The story telling was a tad long. Try to make it in 20 minutes, and do include some ghost stories! The ghost was not mentioned. Also, there should be a place you could dry very wet hiking clothes. The bathrom we had could not get any warmer.

A fantastic old historical hotel. Very good beds, very good food, a nice big garden close to the big inland lake Bandak, surrounded by high mountains. The hotel staff was very nice and service-minded. A perfect stay combined with a travel with the more than 120 years old canal boats on the Telemark Canal, passing a lot of locks on the way from the coast city Skien.

Exellent hotel, food and service. This must be the most beautiful hotel in Norway! Combined with the boat-tour on Telemarkskanalen, and walking-tour (30min) to the old Rui houses, this is a uniqe experience in two days (and we have seen a lot!).
