We were the only English couple amongst Belgians & French! A charming hide away in the Ardèche & Philip & Veronique were excellent hosts. Their evening meals were delicious and we enjoyed the ambiance of the communal dinners. Room was very nicely furnished and comfortable. Also an excellent swimming pool.

This place is brilliant, right out in the magnificent countryside of Ardeche, a few kilometres from Rosieres. It is the second time we have stopped there, the 1st time was back in 2005. Phillipe and Veronique were running it then and they are still running it 12 years later. Why it has taken us 12 years to go back I don't know. I think it was originally a farmhouse and buildings but Phillipe and Veronique have done a wonderful job of renovating it and creating a brilliant place to stop. The rooms (charmingly decorated) and garden are great, and to make things better there is also a lovely swimming pool to relax in should you wish. One of the highlights is sitting outside around the table in the evening having a brilliant meal (and wine) and chatting with all the other guests. Fortunately all the guests (American, Belgium and French) could all speak English cos my French is appalling and my wife's is not much better. We would start our meal at around 8pm and we were still sitting laughing and telling stories round the table after 11pm at night. Phillipe and Veronique are great hosts and Phillipe is an awesome chef. Other than the meat most of it comes from their own garden. They have mastered the art of making it all very informal and easy. Ardeche is beautiful, there are loads of beautiful villages to explore, mountains to tour, gorges to see, markets to visit and often with few other people around. For the more adventurous and energetic you can go canoeing down the Ardeche gorge, canyoning, climbing , cycling, walking etc. We loved it, thank you Phillipe and Veronique!

A maison d'hôte – complete with chambres d'hôte and, crucially, a table d'hôte – is characterised as a bed and breakfast where you may well be offered dinner as well. That's the case at L'Oustalou, where the welcome extended by hosts Véronique and Philippe is extremely warm and genuine. Philippe is a superb chef, working with homegrown produce of the highest quality. You say in advance if you require dinner and you won't know what you're getting until it's placed in front of you. Everybody eats together around one table – it's important that you're up for that. The setting is stunning, the house and rooms beautiful, clean and well appointed. The grounds are extensive, including a good-sized pool. Bird-watchers and nature-lovers take note: we saw a number of kites and a pair of hoopoes, and, on our last night, an extraordinarily large toad. Nigel Farage resigned his position as leader of Ukip the following morning.

Philippe and Véronique made us feel at home in their beautiful restored farmhouse. Our room was comfortable with air-conditioning when we needed it, and we all loved the large terraced garden (complete with hammocks) and the pool. With only a handful of guest rooms, we never felt crowded. The evening meals cooked by Philippe from local produce (often from their own garden) and eaten together at the long table on the terrace were a real highlight - not to be missed. The house is quietly situated but convenient for the charming small town of Joyeuse (look out for the Sunday night market). Lots of outdoor activities in the local area, and Philippe was full of helpful ideas for places to go. A wonderful stay.
