Somewhere to call home for 2 weeks in Tuscany , was the brief. We chose Volterra as it was a hill town with plenty of history. Then we looked for accommodation close enough to the town that we could walk, with a kitchen. Il portone fitted these requirements. The surprise was when we arrived it was beyond our expectations. It...

Really nice area, in the garden variety of seating, tasteful, traditional, clean and spacious rooms, mosquito nets !! , Good location for walking tour of Volterra. Friendly and helpful owner. In our apartment not exactly ideal solution shower - water everywhere. Furthermore, not entirely suitable for a stay with a toddler - lots of dangerous stairs, terraces, hills - but...

The owner was so accommodating! We were arriving much later than scheduled due to an Andrea Bocelli concert in a nearby town (traffic was at a standstill for over an hour!) and so we called and they were very nice about it. The rooms were as advertised and suited us perfectly. The space was quiet and comfortable. No hot water...

We loved staying at Il Portone, and selected it based on the good reviews on TripAdvisor. Our correspondence with Luciana was efficient and friendly. So, when we arrived, she greeted us by name, not just as travelers. The setting is the former farm and lands in her husband’s family - tastefully renovated: simple and characteristic. Each guest apartment is set...

Wonderful hosts, and magical environ. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we could not rent a car so we arrived by public transport. The hosts picked us up at the bus depot, no charge to us! They were wonderful and friendly, despite not having the best English. The room was big, with a small patio in front of the door. Great place...

Il Portone is located just within the Etruscan gate Porta Diana, offering a nice view of an active farm/olive grove and nearby city hills. It is difficult to find and is a good 1.5 km from the Porta Fiorentine into town. I certainly could not climb the steep hill up in ten minutes; twenty strenuous minutes would be more like...

Had one night (sadly) in Volterra at the start of our holiday. Il Portone was a great base. Admittedly ten mins walk uphill to get into the town but the facilities are brilliant. We had a small apartment with separate kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. Shame we were only acing the one nigh as we din really make the most of...

Our large apartment was filled with character and comfort, except for the fact that the heating was inadequate for the cold weather. Would be great in summer with large windows offering beautiful country views. Fantastic grounds and friendly cats. The charming town of Volterra was a short walk away. Highly recommended.
