Guest House and Cooking School in the old town of Todi in southern Umbria. All 3 rooms are furnished differently with a great mix of Danish classics and modern Italian furniture. We offer different cooking programs from 1-6 days. The house is situated on the historic wall of Todi with great views of the valley and only 5 minutes walk from the city center. English is spoken.

A fantastic and welcoming place, it felt like home. All attention to detail and nothing left to chance. Exceptional owners who make you feel good and unique breakfasts prepared by them with genuine products. Cleanliness and details of the unique rooms.

After a friend raved to us about Il Ghiottone Umbro, it was the first place we booked on our (very first) trip to Italy. The home and the guest cottages behind it—where we stayed—are beautiful. The panoramic landscape, visible from seemingly everywhere on the property, is spectacular. Our rooms were bright and airy, with a lovely canopy bed and a glorious sunken bathtub. The owners, Thomas and Lisbeth, are gracious and solicitous. I made a big mistake not signing up for one of Lisbeth's cooking classes. The breakfast she made us (served in their dwelling-magazine-caliber kitchen) was just incredible: bread, granola, cake, and a zucchini frittata, all prepared from scratch. Their three cats hang around outdoors, which made us feel even more at home. This is a magical place, worth building a visit around.

Thank you for some fantastic days with you Thomas & Lisbeth. We have not regretted for a moment that we chose to go back to you. Relaxing, cozy rooms, comfort, really delicious food and then you have a beautiful city and a beautiful area right outside the door. We will definitely be back. We missed an opportunity to sit at a communal table outside now that the weather turned out to be so good, but we look forward to it on our next visit. Have a good time then.

Hard to imagine it's taken me 6 months to write this review. An indicator both of my frenetic life and just how much my incredibly relaxing stay at Il Ghiottone was needed! I spent several days soaking up the view over amazing breakfasts before dragging myself away to explore the surrounding towns. Lisbeth and Thomas could not have been more gracious hosts, offering thoughts on dinner options and local purveyors I shouldn't miss, as well as sharing insights and recipes. The memory of those beautifully peaceful days remains wonderfully vivid--a reminder to carve out another visit before too long!

We stayed in what is called “The Small Room”. It is NOT small. We travel with too much luggage. There was plenty of space for us and our stuff.
The room was well appointed and designed making it easy to hang clothes and stash our bags.
Hosts were great.

The hosts were very friendly and helpful regarding what to do and what to see in the area. The cooking class they offer was so much fun and delicious. The accommodation was excellent. The breakfasts (included) were amazing. No need for lunch or snacking. We were full all day. We will definitely return.

Room Tip:Â There are three or four ways to go up to Todi. The easiest route is the road the bus (free) takes.

Wow, it was a marvelous one night stay at Il Ghiottone Umbro. An old medieval house which was decorated in Danish & Italian style. Beautiful place and rooms. The view from the terrace is breathtaking. Comfortable chairs are located on the terrace for perfect relaxation and enjoying the peaceful view. The room was large and very special. Danish atmosphere in an Umbrian house. The breakfast which was also mentioned in previous reviews is the best experience we ever had. Both hosts are chef, made delicious dishes and try hard to help us and make our stay enjoyable. Location - It took us less then 10 minutes walk to get from the house to Todi old city. We loved this place and definitely will come back. Highly recommended.

We stayed here for 5 nights in October, 2016 as a central location from which we could visit Umbria. We lucked out in that our trip was before the massive earthquakes that hit about 30 km from here. I e-mailed the owners to check on the property afterwards and they said all was OK. Thomas and Lisbeth, expat Danes and great cooks/chefs bought this property a few years ago and converted into a combination cooking school and B and B. We selected it as Todi seemed like a reasonably good central location from which to explore Umbria (it is) and the town itself seemed interesting. Also, the owners speak English and are familiar with the area and we wanted a cooking class. The price was also very reasonable. The 3 rooms for guests are not accessed from the main house, but off outside stairs that can be quite slippery in the wet conditions. The owners are often gone, so it isn't easy or convenient to use the shared rooms in the main house, so you are pretty much stuck in your room or on the patio area, when not otherwise touring. The bedding, for us at least, was unusual, with his and hers duvets and uncomfortable pillows (we were able to get one firmer one). We were in the tower room and it was sparsely furnished, with very little room to unpack, if staying for more than a night or two, and no place to store wine, of which one of the joys of visiting this part of the world is keeping some and drinking more. We actually had to store the wine around the tub in the bathroom. Very quirky, as I said. Breakfasts were multi-course and sensational. We tried to get across to them after the first couple of mornings that we really couldn't eat that much, but they have their routine down and kept bringing on the food. Probably the best breakfasts at any B and B we have stayed at. The cooking class, in which one other guest joined us, lasted all night, and we made fried artichokes, fresh pasta made into gourmet raviolis and into tagliatelle with truffles, and pannacotta. My wife would have liked a little more demonstration, but I thought Thomas and Lisbeth did a good job of both helping and showing and allowing us to try (working the fresh pasta and turning into something scrumptious was amazing). A few words about the location: it is just outside the walls of the city, and the hike into town is all uphill and is definitely longer than 10 minutes. Parking in the town is a nightmare, so the only other option is parking in a lot about 5 minutes away (a few euro) and taking the funicular into town. Todi is an interesting hill town, and we really enjoyed a wine bar Thomas and Lisbeth referred us to, and the restaurants we ate at were all tasty and very affordable (3 course meals for two with wine for around 40 euro - the same meals in Tuscany would cost us double). For driving to other places in Umbria, such as Assisi, Spello, Orvieto, etc. the location can't be beat. Our favorite other hill town in Umbria was Spello, but they are currently doing lots of construction there, so be warned. A bit out of the way but worth the hour and 10 minute trip through the mountains was Gubbio. We enjoyed our visit and driving around and exploring Umbria. We highly recommend it as a cooking school, and as long as you enjoy the quirks, and affordable B and B.

Somewhat surprised by all these carbon copy reviews raving about this place and the owners. We found them to be stiff, inflexible, and not very friendly or warm. There is a very strange dynamic in play. They were definitely put out by us having a (very mild mannered and happy) 6 month old in tow (whom they barely acknowledged) and they are not family friendly.
Any ask or question to them felt like a massive imposition and waste of their time. Even before we got there ringing up to ask for directions to them in todi I got a scathing answer about hadn't I read the directions in the email and no of course google maps didn't have it right how could I have imagined.
The food is fine, some of the dishes are good but we ate better and more consistently all over Umbria. They try a little too hard and the meal we had was not well balanced - felt like they want to show off a bunch of stuff.
The kitchen in a cave is amazing but don't you dare touch anything without their explicit permission, it'll cause a minor meltdown.
Perhaps they should spend a little less time having very deliberate pretentious 'cafes nel orto' and a little more on creating a warm friendly relaxed environment.

We spent 3 nights last week at II Ghiottone and wished for more time in this beautiful B & B. Our room was warm and inviting with lots of storage for both clothes and bath items. The bed, pillows and linens were fresh and comfortable------ and the views were amazing. I must eat gluten free and was accommodated with safe and very delicious food for breakfast-----thank you, Lisbeth and Thomas. I also appreciated the dinner reservation you made for us at a restaurant that could accommodate my GF diet. You made our time in Todi just perfect. JO H
