Albergo Stella is a little gem. Centrally located in the gorgeous town of Sulmona, the hotel is run by two brothers who go out of their way to ensure you have an enjoyable experience. Our suite had been renovated last year to a very high standard making for a very comfortable stay. Highly recommended.

This was our second stay at Albergo Stella and our third trip to Sulmona. For us, there is no other place to stay in this interesting, attractive town. The hotel is barely a hundred yards away from the medieval aqueduct and the grand Piazza Garibaldi while just a couple of minutes walk brings you to the important civic and archaeological museum. On both occasions our rooms were clean and comfortable and this year our room had been given an attractive, more modern makeover. Very effective, silent aircon and a quiet street made for a great sense of peace, although the town centre is a bustling, lively place. The friendly, helpful proprietors run a small bistro with a good selection of local wine - this will be offered with knowledgeable advice if you are interested. Their tips on car parking are very useful. A car is essential if you want to enjoy Abruzzo but there is no parking at the hotel, apart from a pull-in just by the church opposite where you can unload bags (we didn't bother with that). There is a very handy underground car park, Parcheggio Santa Chiara where a week's ticket only costs 14 euro, another short wheel of a case from the Pazza Garibaldi. For good wine and delicious food try 'Buonvento' 5 minutes away - a great recommendation from our hotel. As well as the archaeological museum itself Sulmona boasts a seldom visited and truly spectacular temple to Hercules, set on 4 levels on the steep hillside above the east of the town. This is the area Archeologica di Ercole Curino which can be reached by finding the Via Badia, (which crosses the SS17), driving right to the end where there is a car park and a short track to the temple. If you go there look out for the beautiful mosaic (replica in the museum) and do check out the lower level of the site - it sits on a deep plinth of startling proportions. In short, we had a very enjoyable return trip to the Albergo Stella, in a fascinating town right on the doorstep of four national reserves.

This great place is in the center of town. My husband and I stayed in room 7, a large room with a lovely balcony overlooking the street. The bath was recently redone and very nice. The room had several levels with minibar office on top, sitting area at entrance, and bedroom several steps down. The hotel served a good breakfast and had a nice wine bar, restaurant area. Roberto and his brother were great hosts!! We would definitely recommend this hotel and would stay here again if in Abruzzo region. We were here to hike and our 2 hikes were nice.

Once you park the car you can really enjoy this wonderful town. Location steps from the Piazza Garibaldi, excellent restaurants and caffe’s surround the hotel. Rome was spotless and comfortable, the family that has owned the hotel for many years friendly and helpful, excellent breakfast. Make sure to bring home the best confetti candies that Sulmona is famous for. Will return on my next visit.

What a terrific hotel! Rooms are enormous and sparkling clean. Modern decor, comfortable beds. Smack in the city center, but on a quiet street. The brothers who operate the hotel are both friendly and very helpful. Breakfast in the restaurant is excellent. I was concerned about the lack of parking, but the recommended lot on plaza garibaldi is a less than five minute walk, and posed zero issue for us. Really great property in a charming city. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.
