The family that runs this hotel quickly becomes your family. Daniella Panetta, the manager, is one of the few people in Palinuro who speaks passable English. For 10 days she was our translator and advisor. Her best friend and assistant manager, Pina, who speaks some English, was always helpful. Despite his limited English, Signor Panetta, Daniella's father, is a great story-teller. He also makes small repairs. Signora Panetta is an amazing gardener. She keeeps a dozen or so different species of plants flowering in containers all around the hotel. I have never before seen tuberous begonias bloom so beautifully. Except for a few small square plots around the roots of lemon trees, the hotel grounds are terrazzo. The floors of the rooms are also terrazzo. Both are swept and washed daily. We usually ate our picnic lunches at a ceramic table in the shade of a lemon tree. The swimming pool is about the size of the average American motel pool. It is barely large enough for lap swimming. At 9 feet, it is deep enough for dives off the deck but too deep for non-swimmers. Some rooms have double beds. Ours had 2 single beds which were about 4 inches narrower than American twin beds. The mattresses were very comfortable. The room was spacious. It had a large desk, a small table, 2 nightstands, seating for 2, and a clothes chest with good hangers. The window looked out on an olive grove. A drying rack was positioned below the window; it worked very well in the hot Italian sun. The management graciously cleared out the mini-bar so that we could use it a small refrigerator for our lunches. The private bathroom was huge, with 2 sinks, a bidet, and a shower. Breakfast was included in the price of the hotel room. (It is extra if you rent an apartment.) Breakfast included expresso or capuccino with refills, juice, cereal with milk, toast, butter, home-made jam, 2 kinds of croissants, 2 kinds of ham, 2 or 3 kinds of cheese, scrambled eggs. several kinds of fruit (including wonderful apricots from the Panetta's own trees), and the pastry of the day, lovingly baked by Signora Panetta. The hotel is exactly in the geographic center of Palinuro, a few steps from the Piazza Vergilio. They have a restaurant, but it was closed for repairs when we were there. Residence Hotel Eden is an incredible bargain. We loved it.

Our initial room offered was huge with kitchen facilities but needed an upgrade so it was no problem for us to move to a modern room despite being smaller. English was a problem when the managers daughter was at work. Breakfast was good but the evening meal was limited to the pizza restaurant. Would return to this hotel if I went back to Palinuro
