We had decided to explore the Gargano Penninsula it was on the way back to Pescara airport and we had an additional 2 days at the end of a week staying in a Trullo villa in the Val D'Itria area of Puglia. As the Gargano is relatively unknown by all except the Italians, I had difficulty finding recommendations for hotels but came across Villa Scapone on the internet. Without the usual re-assurance of Tripadvisor reviews I was a little concerned about how good it would be.

I need not have worried - Villa Scapone was a great find and we did not move outside the hotel for 2 days (so much for exploring the Gargano!).

As it was low season, the hotel was not full and we were allocated what was probably the best room for an amazingly low price. This was probably the largest hotel room I have ever stayed in, was very well equipped with a king size bed, minibar (reasonable prices), whirlpool bath plus seperate shower cubicle, twin basins, hairdryer, air conditioning and even a piano! Furnishings were tasteful and in good condition. However, the highlight was our balcony. I had specifically requested a large balcony as the website showed varying sizes, but really did not expect something so huge - it had 2 sets of tables & chairs (sun & shade positions), sun loungers, sun parasol & a hammock. The view of the cliffs and sea below was simply stunning and we spent may an hour sipping Prosecco, relaxing and admiring the view. The fact that the kitchen was below our balcony and so we had the constant noise of clattering dishes and smells of cooking did not bother us, but others may prefer a smaller balcony in a quieter/less fragrant location!

Our room was in the main building which was very convenient for the restaurant. Other rooms are cabin-like units which are more convenient for the pool and, although only a couple of minutes walk from the restaurant, are down a fairly steep slope so those with walking difficulties may be better requesting a main building room. All rooms have an amazing sea view.

The pool area is beautifully located and has terraced sunbathing areas and a seperate whirpool. There is also direct access to the sea, although this is quite a walk down a very steep footpath.

Like the rest of the hotel, the restaurant has an amazing view from it's covered terrace. Food and wine were excellent and very well priced, but the emphasis is very firmly on fish and seafood.

Service throughout is impeccable.

The easiest way to get to the hotel is to take the road tunnel (rather than coast road) before Mattinata. Villa Scapone is located approx 2Km after exiting the tunnel, below the coast road.

The only things preventing me from rating Villa Scapone as 5* excellent rating are that it is perhaps a little in need of some maintainence as some areas are a little 'tired' looking and, as the website gives a deluxe hotel impression rather than good, family run place, I wanted to manage the expectations of others reading this review.

I will most certainly return, and may actually leave the hotel to explore next time!

This hotel is in the most fantastic position and since the coastline is so dramatic here the views are amazing and we had a very good dinner. It has a pool and access to the beach but it's as if no one cares very much about it. There is nowhere particularly comfortable to sit to take advantage of its amazing position and the service is unenthusiastic. I think it needs someone to take it seriously in hand and make it as wonderful as it could be. Such a shame!

We were driving along the Beautiful Gargano Seaside and passed this Incredible Hotel/Restaurant.
We were looking for a Restaurant for Our Wedding Reception and We chose Villa Scapone after having a Fresh Seafood Meal and We knew that our guests for Our Wedding Reception would love the food here along with the Panaromic Views!

Although the location on the cliff edge over the sea is undeniably beautiful, and the seclusion makes for a peaceful stay, this hotel does not live up to reasonable expectation. I was not happy paying for the stay, it was definitely not worth the money and the staff don't seem to care that the hotel provides such a lacklustre and depressing experience! The ownership need to take notice ASAP and I'm frankly surprised it has managed to stay open as long as it has.

The rooms
In desperate need of a revamp- painting peels off the walls, the rooms are shabby and outdated with mould in the bathroom and marks all over the paintwork. We didn't have towels when we arrived, and we didn't even have an information booklet in the room- surely this is standard for all hotels?

Wifi
The Hotel only has Wifi in the reception, not in the rooms or by the pool or anywhere else! which is a complete pain, as the hotel is scattered over 2 very steep hills and it's hard work moving between areas!

The pool
The pool is well kept and very clean, no complaints there. But the loungers are falling apart and covered in stains- not very pleasant. It's a long walk down steep hills through the hotel premises to the pool, a bit of a pain when towels aren't readily provided!

The restaurant
The dinner options are nice, but certainly overpriced. We had our most expensive meal of the trip at the restaurant, and it was average. We had much more delicious and reasonable meals elsewhere! Which is a real shame, because one doesn't want to be driving out every single night to find a place to eat.

We booked through Secret Escapes, who I feel are also slightly to blame for our disappointment-in offering such a poor hotel. They also have it as "Villa Scapone Spa and Resort", there is no spa. Which we only found out on arrival.

Stay elsewhere if visiting this region! Sadly this hotel is not worth the money.

This hotel is in a great location, on the slopes of a hill, overlooking an azure-coloured bay. And the staff are very friendly.

OK. That's the good bits out of the way, now let's get down to the interesting parts of this revue.

The hotel is situate some 10kms from town, so a car is absolutely vital. The road either direction is very bendy (don't look down!) and thus it takes a while to go wherever you are going. And that style of driving is tiring. Going into town last Saturday, we were flashed by some oncoming cars. And around the bend was a car that had flipped onto its roof. Luckily it had hit the rock-side of the road, rather than the barrier on the other side. (It's a steep drop down there).

The hotel is desperately in need of a major renovation - almost everything is sub-standard.

Breakfasts were "tired" and there was no fruit available. When the bacon ran out, it was generally not replenished. The fried eggs were solid, as a result of sitting in a warming cabinet for hours.

There was not a single printed word to guests in the bedroom. No tourist advice, no paper to indicate how to dial reception etc and thus it was only later that we learned there was no room service.

We had to go to reception to get further supplies of soap and shampoo sachets as ours were not replenished. Glasses used by us for drinking water were left unchanged by the maid for 2 days until we took them to reception ourselves.

We noted stains on the inside of windows which were there when we arrived and still there when we left. The windows were therefore never cleaned. The outside light which illuminated steps did not work, even after telling reception twice. The bulb was finally changed on the 6th day and during the intervening period we had to navigate the darkened steps with care.

The furniture was all different and looked as though it had been purchased at a car boot sale (see pic). The wardrobe lock was broken and the doors to that continually opened.
The chairs on the patio were disgraceful (see pic) and the patio table was in bad condition (see pic). The room door needed some attention (see pic)
Tennis anyone. See pic of court.

And by the way, if you want Wi-Fi, go elsewhere. It was rarely available during our stay.

Tennis? See pic.

A member of staff we spoke to admitted that the standards of the hotel are poor. She seemed resigned to the fact that the situation would not change any time soon.

We asked to check out after two days but the hotel insisted that we honor our 7 day reservation by paying the full sum.

Our advice? Go to the Il Porto Residence in town. It is infinitely better than this place and the restaurant is quite wonderful (see my revue of that hotel).

The location was great. The staff friendly. Food pretty good. ... I don't know but I was expecting more. It felt a little run down, maybe it just needed new furniture. It felt almost creepy like from a ghost movie. Maybe it was just because of the weather during the time we were there was gloomy. The only other bad thing was that the jacuzzi in the bathtub didn't work.

Book ed a 4 star as we wanted a good holiday break. This hotel was very disappointing and in our view would hardly merit 2 stars.
We booked a 'superior double room' which in fact had a collection of misfitting furniture in a badly planned room.
There was no wi fi available during our stay, 3 nights, the phone in room did not function and the tv only managed to function occasionally, we had to ask for the hydro massage to be made available (the room included this).
When these issues were raised at reception we were met with an aggressive response. There was no understanding that customers who had booked and paid for services actually expected to receive them.
We asked to speak to a manager and were informed that no management representative was or would be available.
This is a worn out hotel in need of a total refurbishment. We have stayed in many hotels in Italy over the past twenty years, this was a bad experience. No written information available in room.
The location/view was superb.

We stood (4 people from France) for two nights at this hotel and were very happy to be here. Very nice views. Very good restaurant. We had a serious problem with our car, and the daughter of the boss helpt us all the time. She was always ready to listen and to help. Thanks again. They have different levels of rooms. Ask.

Amazing cliff top views from the restaurant & our sea view terrace which had 2 x sunloungers, table & chairs -AND a hammock! Nice staff, good food, jacuzzi bath & very tranquil.

Slightly dated decor but still nice, fairly small menu if you we're staying more than 3 days...

We went for our 20th year wedding anniversary. The views from the villa are amazing. The lady at the front desk was very nice and helpful (my Italian is not the best so it was nice that she speaks English). We booked the room only a couple of days in advance so she informed us no sea view room was available. Still, we we’re pleasantly surprised at the room having a nice view of flowers with a terrace, small table & chairs to have our wonderful Italian cafe and a hammock. The dinner was very good and local wine was nice. Romantic candle lit atmosphere with open views of the sea. The pool was nice and clean but it is a hike to get down to it. They also have cabanas set up, which were very relaxing. They allowed our dog as well 😃
