Paola and Sandrone take turns at cooking, and are well known for their extremely refined cuisine, to be enjoyed on their wide terrace with its incredible view of the Civetta and the Marmolada and is easy to reach on foot, on skis (Lagazuoi 5 Torri ski area) or by taking the Giau chair lift; it is at the hub of many excursions and routes for skiers and is a popular stop along the Alta Via No. 1. But if you're looking for a touch of romanticism, you can enjoy a dinner in one of the refuges, going up on a motor sledge and with a nocturnal descent. There is the possibility to stay overnight. After extensive renovations, the Averau refuge re-opens with a brand new mansard offering delightful double bedrooms in the loft with views to the Civetta and the Marmolada, or to the Tofana di Rozes. For groups, the refuge offers dormitory style rooms with 6 or 10 beds.

Just spent a week skiing in Cortina, which is one of our favourite ski resorts for its superb slopes over a vast area and it’s lovely scenery, atmosphere and of course it’s food!! In the Cinque Torre sector of the resort, the lift system takes you up to a high altitude saddle on a mountain that divides one area of skiing from the next.... and sitting, conveniently alongside the chairlift, is the family owned Rifugio Averau, which is a restaurant with a hotel/ hostel attached, rather than a hotel with a restaurant attached....subtle but important difference!! We ate at the restaurant on two separate lunchtimes during the week and the place, despite being chockablock both times, was wonderfully welcoming, fast, efficient, charming, well priced and, most importantly, it had terrific food and a great wine list. The food is classically what the Italians do best.....simple, elegant, home cooked dishes using fresh seasonal ingredients but raised to a standard that would embarrass many a Chic urban ristorante... and all done on top of a mountain!!!! Keep going to Courchevel because we don’t want this place to become over exploited.....ha!!!

My second trip was nearly as good as the first one last year. The stunning location cannot be beaten. We had great sunsets and sunrises with clear views across to Marmolada. Skiing down past the Cinque Torri first thing in the morning is fabulous and arriving back up at the end of hard day on the pistes to an amazing sunset is very special. The rooms are very comfortable with good showers and plenty of hot water. Nice friendly atmosphere with lots of groups joining in. Food was still pretty good, although my Stinco (pork knuckle) was disappointing and very overcooked this time. Good breakfasts and fresh coffee. I beleive it also gets very busy at lunchtimes.

Its not written so FYI- the water in the tap are not for drink! As a hiker you need to buy drinking water... in addition to your halfboard payment
