We stayed at the Averau on our last night of four hiking from rifugio to rifugio. It was by far the most expensive, but was a welcome respite to the limited water and shared showers of previous stops. There are two other rifugios within sight of the Averau. We hiked up to the Nuvoloa for the view, novelty and a... More

-Location: 5/5 (familiar and clean, great view of the Dolomites, many footpaths nearby) -Menu: 4/5 (large selection) -Service: 4/5 (friendly) -Price quality: 4/5 (costly, but high quality) High quality food and friendly service. It is possible to taste many local dishes. Great view of the dolomites. It is reachable by a cableway. It's worth visiting nearby First World War fortifications.

Wonderful place to stay on the AV1--especially good for a rest stop to remind oneself that there is truly excellent food and lodging on the trail! Beautiful, clean, spacious rooms, and an interesting menu. The beet-filled ravioli and venison tagliatelle are especially good, as are the grappas.

There are no windows in the rooms - only balcony. All balconies are connected, so if you want to have fresh air in the room, you literally have to keep your doors open. In addition, you have to leave the room key at the reception when you leave for the day, and they give it back to you upon return.... More

We visited Refigio Averau as part of our second trip to Alta Via #1. Our expectations were quite limited as we visited other Rifiugios in our first trip and expected OK lodging and OK food. What we experienced in Rifugio Averau was excellent food great sleeping terms and above all magnificent service. It was really a good start to our... More

This Rifugio is simply lovely. Its been recently done up and is an excellent place to stop while trekking in the Dolomites. Splendid sweeping vistas to the front somehow manage to improve even more towards sunset. The rear overlooks the 5 Torres formation. Dormitories are light and airy with balconies with the same magnificent views and handy laundry drying lines... More

Averau was the first stop on our trek through the Dolomites. It is more like a hotel than a traditional rifugio. The food is of an amazing quality as well as an excellent wine list. The accommodation, whilst a dormitory, is well looked after, clean and comfortable.

Stayed for a night at the Refugio Averau - great location and absolutely amazing food and service. Max must be the best waiter in the world bringing an amazing amount of energy, service and laughter all at once, and I didn't understand at least 50% of what he said! Definitely worth staying at and experiencing a great location and high... More

We had better lunch than in Cortina a(for half price) but be aware You won't ski that day because You 're full... Try the aperitive of the house, house wines and the choice of three pastas! It's woth to catch the bus and go up there only because of the food!

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Paola and Sandrone take turns at cooking, and are well known for their extremely refined cuisine, to be enjoyed on their wide terrace with its incredible view of the Civetta and the Marmolada and is easy to reach on foot, on skis (Lagazuoi 5 Torri ski area) or by taking the Giau chair lift; it is at the hub of many excursions and routes for skiers and is a popular stop along the Alta Via No. 1. But if you're looking for a touch of romanticism, you can enjoy a dinner in one of the refuges, going up on a motor sledge and with a nocturnal descent. There is the possibility to stay overnight. After extensive renovations, the Averau refuge re-opens with a brand new mansard offering delightful double bedrooms in the loft with views to the Civetta and the Marmolada, or to the Tofana di Rozes. For groups, the refuge offers dormitory style rooms with 6 or 10 beds. ... more   less
