This hotel is a treasure. Read the history on the website. The public rooms are gorgeous and the rooms are exceedingly comfortable. The restaurant is superb (try the steak tartare made at table side). The desk staff was very helpful in recommendations regarding sightseeing venues. Overall, an elegant, comfortable stay.

they say it's the oldest hotel in europe. If the story is real it's for sure, 600 years old. Optimum staff, great location, amazing food and bar. Rooms are aged but you will love it. This is a charming hotel with a great position.

The hotel is a luxurious place to stay at, with an excellent restaurant. The whole set up is decorated in a tasteful old fashioned way with fine furniture. There is an open-air swimimming pool in an large park garden and the centre of Bressanone is up the street, with its historical monuments and commercial places. It is worth mentioning that...

Very friendly staff, large room ( we got lucky, we were upgraded), great breakfast and dinner at the restaurant, I travelled alone with 2 kids (2+5y), the hotel was not really intended for kids but it worked out fine and the garden - it is huge and lovely, with a nice pool and lovely flowers. The story behind the naming...

Pros: central location but very quiet, extremely comfortable beds (firm, wide, long), excellent restaurant with terrace dining, very large park garden with pool, flowers, lounge chairs and views of the surrounding mountains, outstanding service. Cons: terrible Wi-Fi (slow; signal barely reached inside my room). Rooms are a tad old-fashioned and could use upgrading (more electric plugs); bathroom is tiny and...

Rooms across the way are not the same as those in the main building but you get the private gardens.!when you make your booking it would make a lot of sense to enquire...

The hotel is easy to find, there is a big parking area just behind the building (fee 9 Euros a day). It is a historic and beautiful building, more than 500 years back, yet totally adapted to contemporary needs. Great attention and good taste is payed to every detail- that gives it a great ambience for well-being. Even the most...

This hotel has been open for over 450 years and we have family members that have stayed here going back at least 100 years ago. We love staying here as it is beautiful and old world. The suites are beautifully furnished and welcoming. The restaurant is fabulous and is highly rated by Michelin. Even if we do not stay here...

On our last days in Italy we travelled through Southtyrol to hike in the mountains. We stayed in this remarkable historic hotel. We had a nice big room that was always very clean, friendly staff and very quiet. Maybe the breakfast could have been a bit more satisfying but thats just pecking on high levels.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Hotel Elephant: Stay in a hotel with a great history and distinctive characterIn 1550, King John of Portugal decided to give a “big” gift to the Emperor Maximilian II of Austria, so he purchased an elephant in India, shipped it to Genova, then planned to walk it to Austria. This giant elefant grew weary about the time it reached Bressanone and was stabled for weeks at the Villa Am Hohen Feld . Young and old came from far and wide to see this Elefant. The proprietor of the Villa was obviously a master at marketing: to maintain the fame of his establishment, he promptly renamed his hotel—you guessed it—the Elephant. A picture of the elephant was painted on the front of the building to commemorate the sensational event. But even without an elephant story this hotel is a winner with its old-fashioned charm. The sitting room, hallways, and dining rooms (three cozy rooms) incorporate antiques, museum-quality paintings, and magnificent paneling. The Elephant is also well known for its good food—fresh fruits come from the adjacent walled garden where you also find the swimming pool and an old home that has been converted into very nice bedrooms ... more   less
