Nice clean room, exceptional welcome, gorgeous views peaceful at times when the beach is quiet down below and the barking dog in the distance stops. Be aware it's 52 steps down to the river beach and 52 up again. Access to your room is not always easy as if the main house was locked you had to walk the 52 steps to your car ! Warning that if anything falls apart on your visit you will get charged for it!
Sandra told us that we were her first American visitors. Well, other Americans, you must be number two or three. Arganil is a great, central location for exploring the area and Casa do Rio is as good as it gets as a home base. Be sure to ask how to get to the restaurant across the river. It's a pleasant walk and the food is great. (Hint: One portion is enough for two. Second hint: Try the prawn sautéed in olive oil and garlic as an appetizer.) The self-serve apartments are new, modern, and spotless. Sandra stocks the kitchen with breakfast goodies and then, after running Oliver to school, brings by a basket of bread. We really liked the stay (two days) and recommend it highly.
Very nice sustainable and eco-friendly Boutique Bed & Breakfast. We enjoyed our stay in this authentic place with "true personality". Astonishing contemporary decorated rooms and great ideas such as a welcome drink, a very reasonable priced wine list with wines from the region selected by the foodie owners, a self-catered breakfast with a fresh bread basket in the morning, …. A place to discover if you want to enjoy Portuguese nature in all its beauty. A house with a view on a river where you can take a stroll, relax, chill and swim together with the locals. The hosts provided us with more than we expected. Thank you for your hospitality!
I was on a solo bike tour of Northern Spain and Portugal and stayed in early Spring this year. The location of this house is beautifully secluded in a pine forest and felt like the perfect place just to get away from it all. There is a river right next to the house where you can swim and acres of surrounding woodland where you can get walk all day on your own or with the owners dogs, Donald and Mickey. The room I stayed in was quiet, overlooked the river and was very well equipped with everything you could need. Sandra and Lex, the Dutch owners, are typically relaxed and welcoming and will give you lots of information on what to do in the surrounding area.
Stayed in 'the house on the hill' for three days last summer. For me, this is one of the most beautiful places in Portugal. Close to Coimbra and Bucaco. The casa is really comfortable. Very good beds and fully equiped apartments with big terraces. I really enjoyed the company of our hosts, Sandra and Lex, as well. Laid-back people with a good taste for wine and spices. They can expect me back next year.
