Handun Villas is a property we discovered when searching for pet friendly accommodation in the south. The entire experience was excellent right from the booking process to the sad departure from the property. Nayomi - The owner was extremely helpful in taking our call and ensured that we got a fantastic room. Airy, bright and comfortable, the room was complete with a comfortable four poster bed with mosquito net (Even though there were no mosquitos), A TV with cable connection, Wifi, An open air ensuite bathroom with vintage bathtub, and plenty of glass water bottles since they do not use plastic (Yay!) The staff were extremely caring and kind towards us and our doggie which was very comforting. They always checked if we wanted tea or coffee and Lalani even kept an eye on our doggie while she ran around the estate during our time in the pool. Food was tasty and prepared according to our requirement. It would be good to let the team know what is required for your meals a few days before you arrive so that they can get the provisions arranged. Keep in mind that tourism and travel is at an all time low and properties need our support and understanding in terms of things like this so that they get the best opportunity to meet your needs perfectly. The pool was lovely and the water was a perfect temperature for a dip on a sunny day. They have also provided several deck chairs with comfortable cushions and sun umbrellas for ample shade. Very tastefully laid out on a wooden deck! The coconut estate around the Colonial house is expansive and has a large number of peacocks and some cute monkeys jumping around. The beach is a 2 minute walk across the main road and is unspoilt - There was no plastic lying about when we visited like most of the other beaches have in Sri Lanka. Overall our stay was extremely comfortable and Nayomi has trained her staff well to take care of guests with genuine professionalism. They followed Covid protocols and wore a mask at all times when interacting with us and kept the property sparkling clean, which was indeed very comforting. Thank you Lalani and Upul for taking care of us during our stay and Thanks Nayomi for having us at your amazing property! May you all prosper in the months and years to come!

Handun Villas is a very good example of a very bad villa. Stayed 16th - 17th nights Its best feature is the large plot of estate land upon which it sits, and for this small mercy the management deserves absolutely no credit. Almost everything else about our experience was an utter shambles. First impressions give the sense that the main building was last refurbished around the time DS Senanayake became Sri Lanka’s first Prime Minister. Dust and dirt have taken up permanent residence in the upholstery (which is only sparingly provided) in ways that only time and severe neglect can conjure. The buffet table, which might have been fully dressed at one time, now sat half naked and stripped of dignity, its top ripped off, exposing filthy stains and emitting the aroma of meals gone by. Shockingly, the table was allowed to remain in this embarrassing state of undress for the entirety of our trip, inviting hordes of flies to celebrate with us at mealtimes. We were offered a welcome drink, which was standard fare. No complaints. However, the welcome gift we found sitting proudly in one of the bathroom commodes was not as welcoming. The main bathroom was teeming with large, black ants (who also had no issues getting into bed with the babies), and was so slimy, wet and pungent that it brought back rancid memories of the toilet facilities at the Khettarama during the innings break of a Sri Lanka-India cricket match. Moving swiftly on. Handun Villas had promised “giant squirrels, monkeys, birds and the best that nature has to offer”. On this, they delivered in spades. When it rained, two of the rooms sprung leaks so raging that the promise should have read, “the best that natural disasters have to offer”. When we asked why such large leaks had not been attended to we were told, true to brand, that it was a troupe of curious and rather strong monkeys engaged in a sustained feud with the roofing that were to blame. It was not clear why no effort had been made to repair any of the damage before guests arrived. While the first 2 families were displaced by nature, the 3rd displacement was likely man made. This group was forced out of their room by a smell so bad that it rendered the space unlivable for humans, let alone humans on holiday. By now, curious wives were literally turning the mattresses over which, as you might imagine, led to nothing good. Brown smears were found on towels and sheets. Maybe the monkey’s had an orgy after they breached the ceiling. The rooms were actually not that bad. Some of us even had duvets and others had door handles that worked. In fairness, it was unfortunate that it rained, but this doesn’t take away from the fact that a basic requirement at any ‘luxury’ villa should be shelter and cleanliness. Even in the common area there was no real space to convene as a large group because the main hall was a strange, narrow L-shape that looked more like adjoining hallways at a government office. So, in the evenings, we were relegated to the driveway, partially shielded from the downpour, cold and wet as pools of water collected at our pruning feet. On the plus side, we were offered a discount for the two rooms that were completely flooded. In addition, the staff did all they could to surmount these obstacles but they did not have the resources or the capacity to combat such significant neglect. Their best efforts could not hide the fact that they were severely undermanned, woefully under-trained and literally drowning. The fact that they went about their thankless work with a smile is a testament to them. Having said that though, we would have preferred to see masks rather than smiles. For all of this, management must take responsibility. For 16 thousand rupees per room per night, a basic minimum standard has to be met. Handun Villas online presence and pricing conveys an image that is not congruent with reality and, for this reason, holiday-goers should take caution.
