Katkavaara Apartment hotel is located near Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland and close to the Pisavaara Strict Nature Reserve. The nature in the Katkavaara region is unbelievably beautiful and diverse. Indeed, Katkavaara can easily be called a nature-lover’s paradise.
Katkavaara is located right between the most popular tourist attractions of Southern Lapland.
Our most popular amenities are for example:
- beautiful Katkavaara Fjell (Mountain)
-a river with fishing possibilities that is running below the Hotel
-breathtaking nature views around
-an excellent site for following the Northern Lights
-a camp ground in the summertime
- lots of activities available all year around
- a fully licensed restaurant with local delicacies
- deluxe Finnish sauna on the riverbank with a possibility to admire the Northern Lights
- a cosy wooden teepee
- authentic and original Snow Igloos (from December until April).
Worst customer service ever! We booked the sauna for 2 hrs. The price was 30€. They wanted us to pay for it by 16:00. We were hiking and were a little late with the payment so they did not turn on the sauna at all. Only after we paid 40€ did they turn on the sauna.
If your main priority to come to Rovaniemi is to see northern lights, this is the place you should stay. We took the package from Lapland Welcome and everything is provided for including winter gears. Every night, there will be organised tour from Rovaniemi to Katkavaara and you can join them. We will make a trip up the hill by foot (it is quite steep so you do need stamina and take your own time and pace). Otherwise,I still manage to see the northern lights even right outside the resort. We stayed for 5 nights and saw northern lights for 3 nights. If the weather is good is is very likely that you will see northern lights here.We just loved the stay in the wilderness,it is so beautiful when it snowed, peaceful and quiet. Since we were the only one staying,we get personalised attention and the food is delicious. The cabin is well equipped, clean and beautiful.I will highly recommend this place and the tour agency Lapland Welcome for such a great organising.…
We were in Rovaniemi for one night and in our hotel found the leaflet for Veli's nature safari tours. That night, we went out with Veli and saw wild moose, also arctic hare. Part of the safari drive is to have a talk, and hot drinks at Katkavaaran Lodge, and we saw there were cottages to rent. So the next night, we stayed! The cottage had all we needed - privacy and peace, well equipped kitchen, underfloor heating, double bed, good shower and sauna. We were able to cook our own meal, went for an enjoyable walk in the afternoon and evening, when we saw two more moose for ourselves, very well and for about half an hour, we stood and watched them feeding. The following morning, we went to the nearest lake for a swim - saw no-one in two hours, then 'home' for breakfast. Veli, and also the young man who checked us in were friendly, efficient and knowledgeable about trails to walk, all the facilities. I would return anytime. Thankyou…
If you have come to Finland with one goal in mind ("To find the Northern Lights!") and you have rented a car and want to head up to the Arctic circle so that you can see them . . . . then this is the perfect place to stay :-) My husband and I stayed here in March (which is a great time to catch the northern lights) for 3 nights. We booked it because it was one of the cheapest options we could find that was in a great location to spot the lights from (without having to travel too far north), and it looked clean and had a kitchen so that we could make our own meals. There is a hill right outside the accommodation block that you can climb to wait patiently for the light display. Its about 300m and fairly steep so you'll need adequate fitness levels (and in the winter you'll need good boots or snow shoes and HEAPS of winter clothing like we did!) but the spot is SO good to watch the lights from that we had tour groups joining us up there everynight who had driven all the way down from Rovaniemi! It means it wasn't silent up there, but it was nice listening in to what the guide was saying about the lights, and when the display started on the second night it was lovely hearing the "ooos" and "ahhhs" coming from small groups of people as they huddled together watching the magic above them. Be sure to get up to the top of hill and settled in up there by 10:30pm, because that's when it all seems to get going. We stayed in the family room which had comfortable single beds, a kitchenette to cook in and a clean bathroom. Linin, towels and teatowels are not included in the price but can be hired. Cleaning is not included in the price either but it's easy enough to take care of this yourself at the end. The only weird thing about the place is that we were the only ones staying there so the staff disappeared - the restaurant and reception was closed and we were the only ones on the property most of the time. It didn't botter us much as we had a car and supplies to make all our own meals, but it was just a little odd. Rovaniemi is the biggest town about an hours drive north (we went up to visit the Arktikum, Arctic centre, which was good) and Kemi is the biggest town about an hours south, which means you really are in the middle of nowhere - but this is a GREAT thing if you want to see the Northern Lights because there is no light pollution. You do need your own transport. There is a small town called Tervola about 15 mins drive away with a fairly big supermarket where you can get supplies. Pack food, lots and lots of warm clothing, your DSLR camera and tripod, sheets and towels and your good to go! Good luck! I hope you see them. It's beautiful :-)…
