My husband and I ate here on Sunday. We picked our food off the Sunday Lunch menu, £17 for 2 courses. The starters were poor and very small, the main course Sunday Roast with all the trimmings was over-cooked and soggy. My small glass of Shiraz was £6. Altogether extremely over-priced for what we got.

The last two years have been a struggle for a lot of small hotels and holiday cottage businesses including our on. Months of lockdown and little in the way of income was followed by a booking after booking as soon as we were allowed to reopen, with little time to do much in the way of maintenance , and I suspect that Careg Bran has had a similar experience. I travel to Anglesey weekly and over the past month have stayed in several hotels around the island. Many of them, including the Careg Bran need more than the odd lick of paint here and there, and in this particular instance it will look a lot better when this is done; but as far as the essentials are concerned this place is hard to beat. The food is good quality albeit that portions are enormous, the bedroom was comfortable and clean, and similarly clean extra blankets were provided on request, breakfast was cooked perfectly for me and the coffee was strong..particularly needed after a great night in the bar the night before. All of the staff that I met could not have been more helpful (including the chef who provided a perfect off menu evening meal that I had requested) Not only helpful but interesting to chat to, an important ingredient I find when travelling on my own. All in all a very enjoyable experience over two nights. Yes it needs some work but those essentials, for me anyway, far outweighed anything else.

After booking the hotel for 5 people on a tour of Wales we looked at the photos on the website and booking.com......... oh how you can manipulate the image portrayed of a place by clever editing. A voicemail left on our phone when we were half an hour away to be told if we didn't call back our rooms would be re-advertised....... on arrival had to go to the bar to find someone to check us in........ once checked in got the keys to a squatters den..... aka our room, mould all over the place. Only 1 light worked in our room, no hot water and a hold in the cealing, all other rooms were of a similar state but the others had hot water and working lights. We arranged to meet in the bar to get some food and drink following our tour up there from the Midlands..... to be told we could not be served as they had a party in and could not accommodate their few guests....... several bar staff around and none could serve alcohol, bar staff told about no lights and no hot water and was told this would be sorted which wasn't. In the end we had to order Pizza in from Bangor and sit outside trying to drink enough to make it bearable. Awful nights sleep owing to guests of the party screaming until around 2am outside the rooms. Come the morning the rain was heavy but was more welcoming than staying another moment. Went for breakfast as a group and the coffee served was cold...... I'm not talking it wasn't piping hot..... I mean cold as if left in the cafetiere from the previous day. The bar has been renovated and does look amazing..... the service, the rooms and the customer service offered was dismal, and the price for what is offered is beyond comprehension, spend your money elsewhere.

1. At point of booking the site tells you its charged your credit card. It didn’t! They ran the card through on the day of arrival, but the card had expired, so they’d kept my card details for over a month. They rang on the day of arrival and said they’d be putting the rooms out for sale again, if didn’t ring back, which is difficult on a motorbike. 2. No food was available for guests as they were hosting a party at the hotel. 3. The room has to be something out of a 1950’s horror film. Disgusting in every sense of the word. Beds were like sleeping on rocks, dirty room, curtains that did not even cover the window and the window could not be secured. 4. The wing we stayed in looked like it was falling down. 5. Half the light in the room did not work and there was no hot water. 6. We were told we could eat a takeaway in our room, to which I said no, due to the state of the rooms, so eventually ate outside. 6. Breakfast was awful. The sausage still had a pulse and the rest was edible, but not what you expect for £10 per head. I have never had cause to write a bad review, but his place needs closing down and the H&S Inspectorate needs to go and visit it. I will reporting this hotel to the relevant welsh local authority and be writing to the manager to gain a full refund. There was no where else to go, otherwise we would have left there and then. I am fully aware of how hard the hospitality industry has been hit during the COVID pandemic, but there is no excuse for a hotel to be in the condition that this one is. I am utterly disgusted and pitty the staff that have to be on the receiving end of customers like me. It’s not their fault, but the owners, who should be ashamed of themselves. Do not go here.
