We enjoyed the stunning arts center, A’ The Arts, across the street, which provided a great lunch for our residency and the local knitters even made a pair of Sanquhar fingerless gloves for me overnight! The Tollbooth Museum is very well done and provides great history of the area. The Oldest Post Office in the World had great souvenirs, ordered children’s shirts in my grandkids favorite colors and even came to the hotel to let us know they were ready! The drive to Dumfries, visit to Dumfries House, the ruins of Sanquhar Castle and the local walks were fantastic and as picturesque as anything we saw touring Arran, Oban, Skye, Inverness and the Cairngorms. We highly recommend a visit to Southwest Scotland and a stay at the charming Nithsdale Hotel.

Only other thing was there was 2 dogs barking til quite late on. .but didnt. Spoil our stay. Breakfast was lovely & hot and plentiful as was the continental offering . If im in the area again i would. Certainly stay here.. this is a place that should enter the programme. 4 in a bed as it would stand a good chance of winning if not a runner up. Thank you again for a lovely stay keep up the good work.all staff were brilliant and attentive.
We stayed in room 8 (superior double room) Good spacious clean & tidy room, crisp bed linen and with good facilities tea coffee making etc and just required the few tweaks as previously mentioned earlier within my review would have been as follows, toilet seat starting to come loose or poorly fitted, dimmer switch for the modern light fitting above the table not working properly, nowhere to hang coats up in the room (small wardrobe or even just a few hooks somewhere and no small bin within the toilet shower area for disposal of hygiene products etc, (although maybe this may have been to do with covid restrictions). The electronically controlled shower was great (once we worked out how to use it - gave me a laugh and a great shower.
Brother in law who was also travelling with us was in room 10 as a single and he was more than happy with his room and his stay. (his first time back in Scotland since the mid- 1980's)
This is our 4th stay in Scotland in the past 2 months and the royal borough of Sanquhar was a lovely spot to wander around and the older type, but well kept, houses and buildings within the main street and around the village have a story of their own to tell. Good central location for a base and we will look forward to returning to the Nithsdale.

Garlic mushrooms starter was 5 frozen then deepfried prepack style with a lightly garlicky mayonaise. We asked for a garlic bread to accompany this, it was brought to us well after we had finished our starter, the plates were in fact being cleared as the waitress brought the garlic bread out. A half panini toasted would be a better description.
The Caledonia chicken was lovely and very tasty but the chips accompanying the burger were only blanched and had to be sent back to be re cooked.
Then there was a hair in the sticky toffee pudding, we didnt even bother to mention this as we didnt want to sound like wingers. As soon as our sweet plates were being lifted the waitress asked if we wanted the bill. No offer of coffee or any other drinks, we felt like an inconvenience.
£72 for 3 courses of pre pack pub grub, 2 house wine, 1 shandy and a cola.
Massive shame as we were sizing the place up for a future weekend stay. Unfortunately it won't be for us.
The reviews for here seemed great at face value.
The hotel is really scruffy looking on the outside, on entering it was modestly decorated and the waitress was friendly.
The dining area was reminiscent of an American dinner, but that's where the similarities end.
There was no Gluten Free items available on the menu, so I had to try and guess which would be suitable.
The food wasn't great, the Beef Balmoral was so tough, you could have soled shoes with it. It was returned to the kitchen. The replacement one wasn't much better. It was tasty but a tad too tough.
The burger appeared to be cheap burgers and not a lot of filling. The chips were ok
The whole meal took less than an hour, far too quick to enjoy and relax. The moment we said no to dessert they brought the bill!! We definitely won't be back.
