My husband I had a truly wonderful time staying at L'Ile aux Peintres. The owner Claude could not have been more hospitable and lovely (he and his wife even let us bring our cat to stay!), and offered to drive us to and from the train station. The room (the Van Gogh), was beautifully furnished, clean, and very large. We were made to feel very welcome but not bothered in any way. The house itself is beautiful and the garden is delightful (right next to the canal). The breakfast was lovely and very plentiful (fresh bread, pastries, tea and coffee, yogurt, bread and cheese), and there was no problem checking out late. We ate at Les Ruines (restaurant), which was absolutely delicious. I couldn't recommend this place more for a lovely weekend getaway. More

The owners of this B & B are not your conventional hosts - one senses that their priority is their art courses, and art in general. For some travellers, this might be off-putting, but I quite liked the feeling of almost of being a guest at a private house party. I was pretty much left to fend for myself, but anything I actually needed was provided. The decor is suitably quirky and imaginative, with striking public areas downstairs, and a beautiful garden. Note, however, that even in summer there might not be anywhere to eat out in La Ferte Milon. I ended up having to buy a picnic from the local small shops - and eating it in the garden of the B & B.
