Nice cosy restaurant. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. They are very professional and ensure you have a good time. The food was of a very high standard. I had the hake which was very tasty. Good selection of deserts which were also very nice. Also good choice of wine.

Warm welcome from the staff . Comfortable and characterful room. Excellent dinner and breakfast. Both food and accommodation were very reasonably priced. Probably our best overnight stay while walking the Coleridge Way. The bathroom was very modern and spotless. I would not classify the pub as modern as it is an ancient inn, but it certainly has very adequate modern... More

Located in fantastic country this excellent pub is well worth finding. We took relatives from Australia who loved the unspoilt property. The Sunday lunch was excellent and very sensibly priced. We have been before for a light lunch taken outside in a courtyard garden.

This pub is anything bout bare. It has eclectic old tables, lovely thick curtains with matching cushions with a duck theme. Even the cloth serviettes have images on. There are lovely watercolour pictures hung on walls and the place is charming. The first thing you notice on arrival to the pub is the colourful hanging baskets. Four of us came... More

We received a warm welcome in this minimally furnished uncluttered pub. The eating areas are very sparse and minimalist. The menu is mixed.Vegetarian options limited - only vegetable lasagne offered for main course. The asparagus with poached egg starter was very good - but very small for £6.25. To follow we both had trio of Plaice King Prawn and Scallops.... More

We used to stay at the Royal Oak years before and then kids intervened. Having been back twice in the last 6 months with the kids (now grown up), we have to blow its trumpet. It is being led by a keen young chap who is ex-Hotel du Vin. The essence of the pub (an historic, stone flagged, open fired,... More

Stayed at the Royal Oak for a couple of nights when visiting friends in the area. Not usually sure about staying in pubs but any doubts flew out the window when we met Douglas, the landlord, who welcomed us with genuine friendliness backed up by an easy going professionalism. Our room was on the ground floor. The bed was comfortable... More

We first fell in love with this pub over 20 years ago because of its combination of tranquil setting, rustic charm, quality ales and great food. Sadly its success became its downfall as it was successively sold onto people who seemed to think changing it would be for the better. Having heard it had changed hands again we returned and... The pub is a real gem. Lovely to see that locals as well as visitors use the pub as the centre of the community. We stayed for 3 nights and were impressed with the standard of room and food. Best of all was the welcome we received from Douglas, the landlord and all the staff who really seemed so passionate... More

During a long walk, we arrived just after 1pm on A Wednesday. It was quiet but we were not the only customers. We thought the sandwiches as described on the menu to be quite expensive - but we were hungry! When the sandwiches arrived they were delicious, served with some properly cut chips and salad. Well worth the price. The... More
