Phoned up three times this month to make sure the booking was okay and to try and pay for it before hand all I got told was "it's pay on arrival" so got up yesterday morning all bags packed kids excited to sleep out and then A TEXT MESSAGE came through at 10.45 baring in mind checking is at 2 not even a phone call !!!!! When we did phone all we got told was there has been over bookings and there was nothing they can do about it and because we had not paid for the room we lost it (even though I tried to pay for the room) fair to say it ruined my husband's birthday was ruined.

Absolutely ridiculous that after a refurbishment, there are still no disabled toilets in common areas. How is this even legal? For staff to claim that the ladies toilets are fine because there is no step is ludacris. Especially when the door isn't even wide enough to get a chair through!

We spent a great 3 nights at The New Staincliffe. We needed to get away after lockdown and were keen to see the Durham Coast. The New Staincliffe was very reasonable and had a fantastic position overlooking the sea/beach. We had a large bedroom, with sofa and spectacular views over the sea and I would also say that the bed was super-comfortable. The hotel is a very much "work in progress" venue, as they are doing a gradual refurbishment and we felt that the price we paid reflected that. The staff were extremely helpful and nothing was too much trouble. They had a small lite bite menu, which we sampled on 2 occasions outside in the garden in a small marquee with heaters. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would stay here again for touring around the area.

Stayed for a night in February 2020. Only after booking did i see the multitude of ghost hunting reviews so had no idea of its history. Being into such things myself we enquired as to its history with the paranormal and the staff kindly agreed we go on a mini ghost tour alone before booking in our room. The hotel itself has seen better days, but this isnt a chain hotel. Yes it could be cleaner, the carpets and fixtures and fittings are a tad outdated and dusty in places but what character! Amazing victorian starcases and corridors, creaky floorboards and gothic statues and windows all add to its ambience. Great view of the seafront and sea from the front bedrooms. Comfortable and relatively clean rooms and bathroom. Bed was older than David Attenborough but i had a good nights sleep. They run with a skeleton staff so they were hard to find when booking in/out. If you want a clean basic boring stay then book a budget hotel chain for the night. If you want something a bit more interesting and with character then get yourself to the staincliffe. For £40 what can go wrong...
