I booked this B&B based on previous reviews, but they didn't reveal the reality of what my wife and I experienced. We don’t book the cheapest place, usually something around £60 a night. The older couple and their old blind Jack Russell, Charlie, were pleasant enough, but the accommodation was substandard & the décor, although recently updated, appears to have... More

A welcoming, homely guest house. John, his wife Jacqui and Charlie (the dog) made my short business trip relaxing and friendly. Comfy rooms, good traditional English breakfast, and the very reasonable price, make this a much better choice than expensive, impersonal hotels; especially if you are travelling alone as I was. I spent two nights at this lovely little guest house while attending at wedding in Durham. I was travelling alone but was given a huge ensuite room all to myself with a choice of three beds! Nothing was too much trouble for John and Jacqueline. They don't provide evening meals but are were happy to let me use their restaurant... More

Comfortable beds. Good English breakfast. Perfect as a base. Friendly welcome and good location just off A1(M). Stayed two nights for a family weekend. Good powerful shower. Sizeable room with double and single bed. Small TV. The and coffee in room

Stayed there on a lads football weekend and I was a little disappointed. The owner was very friendly but as for the guest house that's another story. It's very dated and needs sprucing up throughout. Slightly strange layout in the room I was in with the wash basin separate from the loo and shower. My bed creaked every time you... More

This is an older Guest House but the price is right. Very friendly and helpful hosts and excellent breakfast. Needs some upgrades. Convenient location on a busy road so back rooms likely quieter. Off street parking a plus.

Myself, my partner and my father have just had a wonderful 4 night stay at The Hill Rise Guest House. From the moment we arrived John and Jacqui (not to mention their dog, Charlie!) made us feel welcome, a theme which continued throughout our stay. Although they only took over in May, and have been extremely busy, they are slowly... More

For the price I was expecting something fairly basic. I proved to be a notch up on that with large clean rooms, comfortable beds and good quality enormous breakfasts. We were at the front and it is right on the main road. That may be a problem for light sleepers as there was a lot of traffic noise.
