We have just returned from a three night stay at the Royal and Fortesque in Barnstaple. A lovely Hotel, well decorated, the superior room we stayed in ( Room 101) was comfortable and clean. On Friday evening, our first night we ate in the Hotel restaurant and lovely meal of three course at the competitive price of £25.00 each. we... More

Stayed here with friends for two nights. Hotel bed very comfortable and room large although not completely renovated. Bathroom was needing updated. Food good we ate in bar adjoining hotel which was very nice. Lounge areas and reception are all updated and very comfortable. We had room out front on second floor which was noisy first night which was a... More

Last week I enjoyed my fifth visit to Barnstaple since 2013, always staying at the Royal and Fortescue, and for the last three visits - the same room. As in the past, my stay was excellent thanks to the friendly, helpful staff. From the moment I telephoned to book until I checked out, I was met with nothing but kindness.... More

A charming hotel in central Barnstable with most pleasant staff, a mix of modern and traditional facilities, however if you are a single traveller be warned single rooms are small although well fitted out. My room was on the the third floor with the lift shaft through the wall, painters were working when I entered the room, however the paint... More

Thank you for taking the time to post a review of our hotel. I'm sorry that you found your room small, and that the window didn't open fully. Our rooms do vary in size, and the windows on the third floor are only able to open a few inches for safety reasons. I'm glad that you found our staff pleasant,... More

Group of guys playing golf, stayed two nights. Charming hotel, full of character, which is hard to find these days. Good food at diner, breakfast adequate, at least not a buffet breakfast. Very central. Rooms are big, although back rooms can be noisy I understand.

The room was booked by my daughter as a father’s day present, and she was hoping on giving us a relaxing night away from it all. Unfortunately it wasn’t what we were expecting......... The room booked was called an executive double on booking.com, this was two above the standard rooms on offer so we were expecting a decent size room... More

I was very sorry to read your recent review of our hotel, and would like to address some of your concerns. The 'Executive' grade room you booked via the agent is one that has been redecorated and has an updated bathroom, and doesn't refer to the size of the room, however I am sorry that you were disappointed with the... The hotel is in a ideal location to explore North Devon. The room was a little small, however, very clean with a modern bathroom and shower over the bath. Breakfast was very good - Shannon-meg and all the staff were fantastic. very good bar and lounge area and served by a very nice guy. The car park is just a... More

The hotel is an old building but the inside is immaculate and clean. Staff were fantastic. I would recommend this hotel. The breakfast was top drawer - only complaint - leave the sausages to cook longer please. Two of my colleagues however said their room was above what they thought were the kitchen and were disturbed by noise and said... More

Once we found the carpark we were pleased to get a space. The receptionist was on a private call when we went to the desk and instead of apologising or acknowledging us she turned her back and carried on chatting. Not a great first impression. Despite this the other staff we encountered were first class. All very courteous and friendly.... More

Thank you for taking the time to post a review of our hotel. I was glad to read your positive comments, and can only apologise that the receptionist on duty did not give you her full attention. Staff are not permitted to take personal calls on the front desk, and should always give customers their full attention. I'm glad that... More

Upgraded to Standard room on arrival. Very dated furnishings, toilet and bathroom which need updating. Sink hot tap was in reverse, then trickled, along with shower. No fridge but extremely noisy obtrusive air conditioner put in place to mask the street noise at night. Could not close the outer sash window on 1st night so had the noise outside. Not... More
