We booked for a single room and one twin. very good price through booking.com. The hotel from the outside looks like a prison, very tired and run down. We knew in advance that the restaurant was being refurbished so we found many places nearby to eat and drink at. Both of our rooms were disgusting, there was a huge stain on the middle of the floor which looked awful, there was mould everywhere, across the walls and ceilings and all around the sink and bathroom. There was a kettle in the room but I was too afraid to use it, there were bits floating around inside looked like rust. The shower was very hot but you we couldn't seem to adjust this. The only good thing was that the bedding and towels that were provided were clean. We only needed a cheap place to sleep as we were at Alton towers during the 2 days we stayed. So it was ok for us but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. In future we would have paid more to stay in the holiday inn nearby. We won't be returning here.

So, I booked this hotel first and then read the reviews on here and must admit I was a little terrified, but fear not intrepid adventurer, it's not as bad as some people might have you think. If you pay £35 for a room then you don't go into the place with high hopes, but there are certain things you expect. Friendly staff, clean sheets and towels, comfy bed, secure room, decent shower and I got all of those things so I was completely happy with my stay. Okay - there are aesthetic issues. The carpets are covered in stains of olden times (but they are historic - the room had been cleaned but bar re carpeting there was no way of getting rid of the stains) and the furniture had seen much better days (the handle was hanging off my wardrobe, the soap holder in the shower was rusty and the tales the headboard could tell!) but this does look like a work in progress. There has obviously been work done on some of he communal areas and there is obviously some effort to restore the place to its former glory. If I were to compare this hotel to anything I'd recommend thinking of those 80's motel rooms in American Dramas. For those who demand the best then don't book, for those who are happy with a comfortable bed for the night in a room with 'quirky rickety charm' then go for your life.

Shocking stay away from this horror hotel, it honestly is something out from a scary movie. Booked this hotel through booking.com however I have never seen anything so horrid. The hotel is like a building site and been told not to drink the water. Please don’t do yourself in by staying here.

This was booked by my mate for £35. We knew in advance there were no catering facilities and we planned to be out all day. Staff were really friendly. We felt secure. Room was dated and headboard had seen some action over the years. They were good at advising guests what to do and what not to do. Don’t drink the water. Also bring photo id as you can’t check in without it. Great pub across the road. Lack of mattress topper would be my main criticism. We got what we paid for so we don’t expect it to be a 5star spa and country club.

I left the booking for a work trip away too late and this was the only one within my budget. I completely regretted it as soon as my taxi pulled up. It was evening time and you could tell there was no life in the place by just looking at the front. Very little light and hardly anyone. I got in and what I can only describe as an older teenager was the receptionist. No uniform, jeans, tight top and feet on the table with a mobile in her hand. Friendly as she was, there was nothing professional about it. There was no lift so I had to lung my suitcase up 2 flights of stairs. I had booked the room on booking.com which said it had a restaurant complete with nice photos. When I asked about this, the receptionist said it had shut down ages ago. Surely enough, as I walked passed it, it was just an empty hall. There was no food on site except a vending machine. The closest place to get food on foot was the petrol station opposite. This was not want I was sold. The room was horrific: Cracks on the walls, especially the bathroom. Tiles were covered in dust and dirt. Limescale was all over everything. I washed down the entire thing before I dared to take a bath. The so-called free toiletries were in very poor quality film bags. There were stains on the carpet across the room with god-knows what. The windows didn't shut properly so I heard everything being on the side that faced the road and the petrol station. Overall, the experience was absolutely terrible. Other guests were heard (oh, yes, at 4am? 5am?) and not seen. Frankly, at times, it was so quiet with unexpected loud shouting and banging in the middle of the night, it was creepy. Oh, and the internet didn't work. The receptionist was not helpful about it either. I will not be staying here and will not recommend it. Pay more and stay somewhere better!
