Although this, in our opinion, is 3* we would definitely visit again as I'll explain. We booked one of the 4 balcony rooms and had room 10.loved the view from here across to the forest. This has recently had new carpet, wall paper, painting. Sadly all the furniture is old and tired and very much needs upgrading. Can't understand why this wasn't done at the same time. The balcony and glass screen looked to have not been cleaned in months! Also an empty champagne bottle and ice bucket were not cleaned away when the room was made up. These are such simple things that would have brought this to 4*. THE GOOD THINGS NOW... The staff are amazing. From reception, waiting staff and cleaners. It was a joy to be looked after so nicely by people that made us feel that they really do care for their guests. Also, the food was so lovely. We are big foodies eating in many to restaurants and we just kept asking for the chef to be made aware how good the food was. Sad that the service was painfully slow but the staff and quality made up for this. Covid-19 precautions were excellent and the waring of face shields was great as you could see the staff. This is an n old hotel and it is showing as this was our second visit and the old furniture really should be changed. That said we will definitely return to room 10 as the staff and food could not be faulted.

Room Tip: Avoid the balcony room on the first floor by the tented seeing area. It's a restricted view

The website says ‘Our Luxury rooms represent the future of the Balmer Lawn Hotel. We offer four newly refurbished Balcony rooms with 7ft King beds. All of these rooms have a view across the Balmer Lawn to the New Forest.’ The Reality: We booked a two night stay in a Luxury room (21st & 22nd May) costing £240 per night B&B, to celebrate my wife’s birthday. Once in our Luxury room (Room no 14), we went to look at the view across the Balmer Lawn to the New Forest. However, a marquee had been placed in front of the window so that the view was significantly obscured. To get the 7ft King bed into the room one side of it had been pushed to within 15 inches of the wall making it difficult to get in and out. The tea and coffee making facilities were perched on a plank behind the door into the room. In the ‘refurbished’ bathroom one of the two lights over the sink was not working, the basin could not retain water as the ‘click/clack’ plug was broken and one small piece of soap was provided to be shared between two guests. When we retired to our Luxury room, after having a pleasant evening meal in the Beresfords restaurant, we found that it was positioned above the Lounge Bar, so that on both evenings we were subjected to the thump, thump, thump of the music being played in the bar, with this eventually stopping at approximately 10,45pm. We raised these various points with the management via email, but their response concentrated on the problems experienced by the hospitality industry due to the pandemic. They did acknowledge, however, the reduced desirability of the view from the first floor rooms but, as at the 11th June, the website still makes no reference to this. They understood that the evening music was not welcomed by all, but considered a silent hotel to be an oppressive and unwelcome place. So, Luxury room or not, guests whose rooms where set above the lounge bar had to put up with the noise (it is only music when you can hear it properly). I did try to continue the dialogue to deal with the points they had not commented on, but the hotel chose not to. Bearing in mind the price paid, I hope we never experience this level of ‘luxury’ ever again.

Stayed at Balmer Lawn Hotel for 3 nights , very impressed with all the Covid procedures that were in place. Food and staff were excellent, nothing was too much trouble. Hotel well situated for the coast and walking in the New Forest. Definitely recommend to friends and hopefully go again ourselves.

All staff were friendly and very helpful during these difficult times. Their work has increased considerably with the extra measures in place and no doubt the brunt of some abuse. Other than delays in drinks orders during busy times, I cannot thank them enough. We thoroughly enjoyed our anniversary post lockdown escape!

In these rather strange times we are all enduring I am not going to be too harsh on a hotel but feel compelled to share my experience of our stay at the Balmer Lawn last week and I'm afraid to say that we will not be staying here again. The place is ideally situated in the middle of the beautiful countryside of the New Forest and a short walk into the charming village of Brockenhurst. All staff, from Reception to the restaurant personnel were polite, friendly and happy. The front Lodge area was very pleasant with its tented roof, and outdoor seating area looked lovely in the sun! That's pretty much all the positives I can really say about the hotel I'm sorry to say. We are well seasoned travellers and have stayed in places around the world from Delhi to San Francisco and know what a 4 star hotel should feel like, and this didn't feel like one. The room was just about adequate, but we were unfortunately situated right above the kitchen and the associated smells emanating from it, especially early morning were interesting to say the least. The furniture (wardrobe/desk) in the room were somewhat cheap in appearance and quality, and the sort of thing you might expect in an old style Travelodge. The desk had a faux leather seat that rather amusingly did not fit underneath and so protruded out at an angle, hindering passage around the room! We learnt quite early on the the place was full, but I have to say that due its size it didn't feel overcrowded. However on the two evenings we dined in the Beresford Restaurant and had to wait between 45 mins and a hour for each course to be brought to our table! The reason for this we were told was because they were full! The actual food was pleasant enough, save for the cooked breakfast that was very average. We had pre-paid for the deal (via Secret Escapes) and had a £30pp allowance for the evening meals. We were so annoyed about these frankly ridiculous waiting times that we decided to forgo the last night at Beresfords and go to a very nice Italian Restaurant in Brockenhurst instead. Like I said, I do not like to be too cruel to any business especially at this moment in time, with all its added pressures but we did not feel we had a 4 star experience at the Balmer Lawn. This is at best an average hotel.

Dear ChrisfromStoke I am very sorry to read your review, from the description of your room location and layout it sounds like Room 6. This is a Superior Room but I do agree the layout and furniture choice could be improved. Your desire not to go "over-the-top" in terms of your review are appreciated by us the owners and all of the staff, who as you rightly acknowledged were delightful and helpful. The delays are a direct result of staff shortages and volume of business. I am not trying to excuse the shortfalls, it is not good enough but this is the explanation. On the basis that we have better rooms and the staff shortage issue will resolve itself over time we would welcome the opportunity to welcome you back despite your closing comment.
