After staying in many salcombe hotels I decided to try South Sands, We were welcomed in and shown to our rooms. Breakfast was excellent and we ate a few few other meals at the hotel. The experience was good except for milk being previously spilt in our room giving off an

In August 2018 I wrote a five star review of the South Sands Hotel, considering it to offer the best food in Salcombe, sadly this is no longer the case. We ate there in April and experienced the very mediocre All Day Menu for a dinner while entertaining friends. We had gone

We came here for a late lunch on Easter Sunday as a birthday treat for my wife. We caught the passenger Ferry from Salcombe, this is the most effective way to reach South Sands, unless you want a 45-1hr min walk along the coast. The staff were really accommodating and friendly

We enjoyed sharing platters in the bar area - all delicious but not huge portions so order plenty! Staff are very friendly and helpful. Always worth the walk to go and eat at Southsands Hotel and then take the ferry back to town!

Having eaten here 3 years ago, we were looking forward to a special evening meal in fabulous surroundings. The Portuguese staff were super, the view spectacular, but the menu did not come up to scratch at all - pretty ordinary pub food at a high price. I've since spoken to

Response from Freya102, Front Office Manager at South Sands Hotel

Dear 'Oscarhuman' Thank you for your feedback, I'm glad you liked the service and food. I did have a similar comment in regards to the menu just before yours so please do see I have copied below which hopefully explains our movements and choice to change the menu to match demand. South Sands is a small independent hotel and as such we are able to respond quickly to feedback from our guests. There has been an overwhelming demand from our guests for a more relaxed informal style of dining, with a mixture of all day dining and also informal sharing dishes (eg meze, tapas). Therefore we have combined our menus and to make it easier for our guests to choose what they want, whenever they want it. There is a wide range of dishes across the new menu, including more substantial ‘supper dishes’ for evening service. The trend is for our customers in the evening to start with informal sharing dishes and then choose main dishes from either the All Day section or the Supper section, giving a wide choice, sufficient even for a longer stay. A few guests have commented on the change from the more traditional format, but this change has been overwhelmingly welcomed and we will be introducing significantly more sharing/meze dishes. In addition to the main menu, we will be offering on our specials board, whole locally caught lobster (Salcombe or Hope Cove), , whole local fish (sharing), tomahawk steaks (sharing) and porterhouse steaks (sharing). I hope this explains our movements more clearly, as you say, the changes were starting when you visited but unfortunately were not completed. Best Wishes, Freya
