What a place! Gem of a hotel, wonderful and fascinating little village and superb restaurant all in one pleasurable bundle. We enjoyed every minute of our stay The one little downside was having to find an extra bag to carry all the 2nd hand books we had fun finding in the many, many book shops. But the Oxfam store came... More

This very comfortable hotel was booked on line early Friday to stay that night, and was selected on price more than anything. To our delight, we found they also had a dining room so enjoyed a great dinner without stepping out into the cold. Service was excellent, food great and a hearty breakfast to start the next day. Visited Hay for the first time today and stopped in at the Old Black Lion. Menu choice was excellent and well priced. Most food sourced locally. Very pleasant restaurant with a small room off the bar which had a log burner and easy chairs. A great place to rest after a walk in the Brecons. If staying longer than the... More

My Wife and I stopped here for two nights over Valentines weekend. Really professional, yet friendly service from all the staff who couldn't do enough for us. Food really good, with the Valentines menu being excellent and worth the money. The breakfast is great too, which is cooked to order with good quality products. Ample parking is a real bonus too.... My husband booked a 2-night stay for the two of us for my 50th birthday. We stayed in the Cromwell Suite - very romantic with its huge bed and staircase up to a galleried landing where we could sit and enjoy the view over the fields. My only criticism of the room would be that the shower in the en... More

Really good sized portions of food and well cooked. Service a bit slow but ok as there was a live jazz band on. Restaurant furniture a bit functional and doesn't improve the ambience ... But nice atmosphere.

As a last minute choice for a short break this was a great surprise. The food was excellent and the staff extremely friendly. I could recommend this to anyone. Hay on Wye is a superb location and the Old Black Lion epitomises the feel of the town.

Stayed for one night with friends we had not pre booked so wasn't sure. We stayed in the Coach House the rooms were lovely with good facilities. Situated in the quaint town so can wander to shops. We dined in the restaurant and again had a lovely meal. Staff attentive and friendly. Would recommend. We also paid a very reasonable... More

We stayed for two nights with a group of eight friends. The girls that took our order and served our food were exceptional. We were a group of rowdy middle aged folk enjoying a get together and for them nothing was too much trouble. The triple cooked chips were wonderful and we had extra helpings on our second night. Everyone... More

Have been three times, 1st time was amazing, 2nd good but 3rd not so good. Menu choice is very limited but prices wow, £23 for steak which I heard someone send back as I was cold, ok this was sorted but even so. Puddings however were much better than mains. Pity I think there are better places to eat. Last... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Nestled within the market town of Hay-on-Wye, this colourful 17th Century Inn exudes historical charm and atmosphere offering quality home-cooked food, luxury accommodation and free Wi-Fi and parking. With parts of the original building dating as far back as the 1300’s, the Hotel subtly blends the elegance and whimsy of the past with the comfort and convenience of the present. Indeed, it is even reputed that Oliver Cromwell once stayed at the inn whilst the Roundheads besieged Hay Castle, which was then a loyalist stronghold. Sympathetically refurbished, exposed timber beams and roaring log fires help to cultivate a homely environment and a famously warm welcome. The Inn features 10 high quality en-suite bedrooms, all of which are individually and tastefully decorated in a style reminiscent of the buildings historic past. All rooms include free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TV, hairdryer, direct dial telephone and tea & coffee making facilities. They offer a choice of Single, Double, Twin and Superior room options. The Old Black Lion is renowned for the quality of its food and has received a host of rewards and accolades including a coveted AA Rosette. The menus, which are changed frequently, use only the best of British produce wherever possible including locally reared meat, fresh seafood from Cornwall and seasonal vegetables. The oak timbered bar with its scrubbed pine tables and comfy arm chairs is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the fantastic selection of local ales (including their own namesake ‘The Old Black Lion’).The Hotel is located in the heart of the Welsh market town of Hay-on-Wye just a short drive from the A438, it also offers free on-site parking for guests. The city of Hereford is roughly 35 minutes away and offers excellent transport links to the rest of the country. For those flying in, Cardiff International Airport is about a 95 minute journey from the Hotel. The Old Black Lion is situated just a three minute walk from the centre of Hay-on-Wye. Renowned internationally as a Mecca for bibliophiles the town offers over 30 bookshops, many selling specialist and second-hand books. It is also home to the annual Hay Festival, Europe’s premier literature and arts festival. The town lies on the east bank of the River Wye and is within the Brecon Beacons National Park, just north of the Black Mountains. Offering some of the most breathtaking scenery in Wales, the surrounding area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts with both the Offas Dyke Path and Wye Valley Walk passing through the town. ... more   less
