#11 of 29 hotels in Luton
Beyond the magnificent facade of the Mansion House which greets guests on arrival, lies a 5 star hotel, which is like no other. However, our guests quickly discover that behind the imposing grandeur of Luton Hoo, the atmosphere is very relaxed and welcoming. Excellent transport links between St. Pancras and Luton Parkway railway stations mean we are easily reached from London or Cambridge. And as one of the most convenient hotels in Luton for accessing Luton airport, we are within easy reach of cities across Europe.

Beautiful building, our room was lovely if a little old fashioned. Paying over £1,000 for a two night stay it seems rather stingey to only have 4 teabags and a solitary pack of 2 biscuits in the room. When we called room service for more we were told they didn’t have any more biscuits, or couldn’t find any, however some arrived nearly 2 hrs later. At breakfast I asked for a latte and was told there was no coffee machine and filter was the only option. My husband asked another member of staff why they didn’t have a machine and was told they did, but they didn’t turn it on in the mornings as they are too busy to make everyone coffee. Erm … what?! There were 12 people at breakfast at the time. Toast arrives, with no butter. Teacups with no spoons. We tried to book lunch in the lounge and were told they were fully booked, despite the room being 75% empty. We asked to move our afternoon tea booking to a takeaway since we needed to leave early (11am) but we’re told the kitchen doesn’t start cooking the cakes until 12 for 1pm service each day. Sounds unlikely. Unfortunately their whole vibe makes It feel like they don’t really want any people here, and requests are answered with a “no” because, well, it’s all a bit inconvenient. I sat in the lounge for over an hour with a book waiting for my husband, none of the 5/6 staff asked me if I wanted a drink despite their being no other customers there. I’m expecting better service with a £500+ per night price point. Spa staff were lovely and massages were amazing. Menu and quality of food needs work and decor need refreshing.

Im going to keep it short and sour, and the reviews below from others cover the points I was going to make. I will add, our room was above and approached through the golf bar, which felt like arriving through a harvester! We had not realised we would not be in the main house, be warned!! Check, the website does not make this clear. Our tired room, 203, had a power point with half the plastic cover exposed.. (danger to child and sub standard, just emphasising the lack of any attention to detail). But after going up the stair case with Daddy long legs on the window sill, and falling plaster in the corner we quickly became acclimatised. The Jacuzzi was about to be fixed, but was empty.. I think the about is quite a long term thing, I know someone who went for a spa day some weeks ago and got the same story... OK, I could go on, the car transfer to the rooms, with the driver with his mask under his chin, and not knowing how to unlock the child window controls for air! Asking 2 men if we were going to share a room! (Does he ask the same question of a man and woman?) OK, enough, for a £400 bill for one night, I wont ever go again, and feel obliged to warn others with this review, but scrolling down, clearly the message is already here. Though the replies from the hotel sadly do not really put their hands up and show they are hearing. I guess the word will get out and people will vote with their feet!

This is the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed at and I mean no exaggeration. I rarely write reviews but I’m compelled on this occasion. Why? Because I don't want anyone else to make the mistake we just made and I think they're getting a nice relaxed, 5* break. The one small positive is the golf which is perfectly decent. The course is in good shape and an enjoyable test. However, the whole atmosphere is depressing, tired and the staff are amateurish. The exception being a receptionist who did his best to help (we were able to switch rooms). It’s so laughably bad that we didn’t know where to start so as we only had 36 hours we stuck it out. Here is the list, it’s long and it’s factual… + the whole place is dirty, smells and is so tired + the rooms are worse than ‘dated’. The first room we were offered was embarrassing (35 FYI) and looked like an old people’s home. We changed but other than being twice the size, it was just as poor. + there are no mod coms in the rooms. Everything is 20 years old. + The TV is quite funny its so bad + the food is generally average and overpriced + the ‘Cold’ drinks were always served warm + they don’t know how to make coffee (!) + the service is terrible + we tried room service but it always went to voicemail + the WiFi didn’t work in our room (#133) + the jacuzzi in the spa was broken. The changing rooms were dirty and small. + the curtains wouldn’t fully close unless you propped together using the sofas.I mean, sounds like a small issue but it's ridiculous. Given all this it’s a total waste of money. I mean colossal. I strongly suggest anyone to stay way clear and management to be honest about the state of the establishment. I've read other responses where the reply has been 'did you make us aware so we could fix the issue?' Without a full refund and a new booking at a different hotel that simply wasn't possible.

The main feature of Luton Hoo is an impressive stately home set in extensive beautiful landscaped surroundings. It has the bare bones of being a five star exclusive retreat. After all, stately homes aren’t all that commonplace. However, Luton Hoo is a sad example of something which could be fantastic but falls well short of its potential. It could be 5 star but hovers around 3 star. The bedroom, spa area, communal lounge areas, furniture and decor are all tired, dated and below par. With a serious and much needed cash injection, Luton Hoo could be great but isn’t even nearly. A word of warning, when you book you may well not be staying in the main building but in an inferior set of rooms 3 to 4 minutes walk away. Breakfast was exceptionally disappointing, as was our pre-dinner drink experience, which was totally lacklustre on sofas which seemed to have given up hope along with the staff many years ago. The service was in line with the disappointing standard of all other aspects of our stay. Of course 3 star is fine, for a 3 star price. Sadly, Luton Hoo came with a 5 star price.

Dear Firecracker81, Thank you for your review. Luton Hoo is furnished in a way that is becoming of a 250 year old stately home of national importance. Our building and its contents are maintained to the highest standard and I am sorry you found our style not to your taste. In relation to breakfast and pre dinner drinks, I can only apologise for your dissatisfaction and hope you made your feelings clear to the team who I know would have assisted. Slipping in Standards - we stayed overnight to celebrate anniversary having been pre-pandemic. A good start with attentive door staff. Thought we’d start with early evening cocktails. We were told ‘no cocktails and no snacks with drinks from the bar.’ The rationale wasn’t clear because there seemed an infinite number of people having afternoon tea in the lounge to the point it looked a bit slummy (no dress codes either). Room was spacious but decor looked a bit tired - like it was 10-15 years old. Dinner in the sumptuous dining room was a very mixed bag. Firstly - the meal was delicious. Strong work from the chef. The experience falls on its backside with nice - but inattentive waiting staff. The waiting staff seemed to be a mix of semi trained casual / gap year youngsters. Ask for a meal with no mushroom - you got mushroom. You don’t get to choose your bread. No butter brought to accompany the bread and long waits for order and/or to offer drinks. This location is incredible BUT… experiences at Adam’s Brasserie are leaking to the actual hotel (the Brasserie is really poor.) I never see any managerial comment from Luton Hoo on this site which makes me think it will be allowed to slide further downhill.

Dear ACMcG1975, Thank you for your review after your visit to Luton Hoo. The Management team and staff are dedicated to providing a 5 star experience for all our guests, therefore it is most disappointing to learn we failed to provide our normal high standard of service. As you are aware the hotel was closed for several months and we accept that we have some inexperienced staff. Please be assured that we have now returned to a full training programme, giving the team members you refer to confidence to fullfill their roles. We look forward to seeing you again at Luton Hoo in the not too distant future. Best Jonathan Brown Hotel Manager After a full risk assesment of our Pro Shop we took the decision to renmain closed due to the linited space and risk of covid 19 transmission. This will be reviwed inline with the Governments step 4 plan. Once again, please accept our apologies and we hope to welcome you back to Luton Hoo in the future. Kind regards
