Stayed on an anniversary weekend. Hotel staff were really polite and helpful and the location is absolutely perfect in the centre of Newbury at one end of the High Street. Free parking on site and plenty of it which is always nice. Room was spotless and bed comfortable and a decent size. Hotel has a very old, comfortable feel about... More

First time staying here, not sure I'll return. The whole hotel is a bit tired only thing not out of date was the drinks from the bar. Only had breakfast which was okay. The car park is a good size. Normally stay at Elephant at the Market, will definitely be going back there. We paid more at the chequers for... More

Stayed here for 2 nights for the races and concert. Ideal location for the town centre and the races. Room was clean and comfy, but very stuffy as no air con or fan. Hotel locks its doors very early at night. Both nights we had to wait for night staff to let us in, despite it being only 11pm. A... More

I spent two nights at this hotel for a business trip. The first night the smoke alarm went off in my room at 6am. It really scared me and I didn't know what to do. Two minutes later the alarm went off and I didn't know what to do. Should I evacuate through the the first exit? There was no... More

A hotel chosen for its location in town centre and near the racecourse - no account taken of the previous reviews or grading. Room clean and tidy in some places in need of decoration and repair but for one short night not a problem. Corridor to room not very welcoming particularly in the morning with doorways made awkward by linen... More

Meet and greet was with a very curt but efficient and pleasant young man.On hearing that this was a first stage to a long haul travel plan he identified correctly that we had considerable luggage. He promptly moved our room originally booked up several flights of stairs in the main hotel to a courtyard room with parking directly outside. The... More

The Chequers is an old Coaching Inn on what was once the main route to London, and display a little "faded elegance" which the Owners have tastefully modernised, and its a great location for visiting Newbury, with ample Car Parking, and close proximity of local sights including Donnington Castle within 25 minutes walk( don't forget to refresh yourself at the... I stayed for one night after a world do. The hotel staff were helpful and polite as you would expect. The room was basic but without missing anything you would expect. Room was also clean as was bathroom. I would recommend asking for a room overlooking the car park rather than the high street as it was rather noisy

The only thing really good about this hotel is the location. After that run for the hills. My room had considerable amount of mold in the bathroom. The shower curtain in the bathroom will pretty much always wrap around you. If they replace the rusted shower rod with the new arched one might solve this problem. The sink itself was... More

Damp everywhere, mould and bubbled paint and wallpaper.... but, staff lovely, beds very very comfortable, breakfast generous is unimaginative, and really, for £62.50 what more do we expect ? Great location. Big, Rooms are average sized, it's a very large hotel, safe, and you can make your own tea in your room.
