#19 of 26 hotels in Scarborough
Standing on the headland, near Scarborough's ancient castle ruins, the Norbreck is the only hotel in town which looks out over both the North and South Bays, with breathtaking panoramic sea view. From this peaceful location you can rest in the convivial atmosphere of the bar lounge or in the comfort of the restaurant and savour the scenic sights of golden sands and ocean waters. In the hub of the town itself, lying just ten minutes' away, there is an array of shops and holiday attractions. While a day trip takes you to York or to see the moors, to test your nerves at Flamingo Land or to revisit 'Brideshead' at Castle Howard. There's such a lot to see and do in the area! The hotel does not have a car park. However street parking is available nearby.

We have stayed at the Norbreck several times over the past 8 years and never had cause to complain until this year. No problem with the hotel itself and it has wonderful views - but the restaurant needs sorting out! We decided to give it the benefit of our doubt after our visit in February when - for some reason - there was a sudden lack of pottery - eating toast off saucers at breakfast etc! - and a severe lack of cutlery - e.g.trying to eat ice cream from a tall glass with a tablespoon was a a bit difficult - not a teaspoon in sight! But - on our second visit this time in June - breakfasts were ok but evening meals not brilliant - the last straw was the salad I ordered! - 2 slices of ‘plastic’ ham, lettuce, one tiny slice of tomato, half a slice of cucumber and ‘numerous’ slices of green pepper and to cap it all a pile of plain crisps - when with other meals there were new potatoes available!! Gone are the days when they used to dish up ‘proper’ ham + coleslaw etc. etc. Having said that they did provide ‘soup’ spoons for desserts this time - and if you’re lucky a teaspoon might appear- and oh yes - there were tea plates available! We’ve always said ‘you get what you pay for’ as the prices to stay at the Norbreck are reasonable - but on this occasion it was far below the standard expected in the restaurant.

Firstly we paid extra for a room with a sea view - we got a tiny room in the attic with a small window that could only be looked out of by climbing onto a step! It was painted grey and was claustrophobic, added to this the bathroom was so narrow that my knees touched the opposite wall when seated on the loo. They moved us to another room, also in the attic but a bit larger with a small window we could stand and look out of. My advice - don't pay extra, it's a con. Having been to many Shearings hotels this was not the best, It's location is fabulous, but the good points end here. I don't think they employ enough staff, if the receptionist is missing it's probably because they are working the bar, and conversely if there's no one behind the bar they'll be on reception. The food was barely adequate, my salad hadn't been washed properly on one occasion. The radiator was on in the room and couldn't be switched off so we had the window open all week. The WiFi is rubbish, it only works in the lounge. This should be a fabulous hotel but it isn't, my advice would be go to St Mawes, the best Shearings hotel we've stayed in.

Once again we decided to book a Shearings' holiday and we were not disappointed. The Hotel is situated overlooking a bay with wonderful views. The rooms are very clean and tidy and we had a sea view overlooking the bay. The food, (Breakfast and Dinner) was good and the staff very friendly and helpful. The menu was varied and suitable for most tastes. We enjoyed the trips that were included in the itinerary, the driver Kevin was excellent in both driving and his knowledge of the area.

went with shearing's on a weekend break by coach, our coach driver was Jack he was very good. The hotel is on top of the cliff top and has amazing views of the north and south bay. The room was very clean and tidy and had a sea view room over looking the bay. Hotel staff helpful and friendly had an issue with the shower and a member of staff sorted in straight away. The food breakfast and evening meal was good. There are some nice walk along the footpaths near the hotel. The castle and town centre are close by.
