Opened in October 2009, To Sostre ("Two Sisters") is a charming family run guesthouse situated in the historic centre of Bergen. This traditional wooden house lies in a quiet, cobbled street and is just a short walk (5min) from the city’s historic water front and UNESCO world heritage site – "Bryggen." We offer comfortable rooms and a family suite, with a wholesome breakfast, including homemade breads and local produce.

This was our second stay at To Sostre and we were very pleased with our accommodations. Our room was lovely, immaculately clean, and very quiet. The kitchen was well equipped and allowed us to make our own breakfasts. The neighborhood is fascinating, with interesting wooden houses along narrow cobbled walkways. The locations is excellent, only a few minutes walk from the harbor and from the Floybanen.

We booked To Sostre Guesthouse in September, 2018, for our stay in July 2019. We were five couples who would be traveling together and we wanted accommodations with common living space to share, a much better arrangement than five hotel rooms. When I found To Sostre, I thought we'd put three couples in the Gardenview apartment (with three bedrooms and 1 bathroom) and two couples in the Greven apartment (which has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom). Ilana, the owner, had a different suggestion. She thought we ought to consider taking all three of the rooms in the main guesthouse (Blue Room, Canopy Room and Loft), plus the Greven apartment. If we occupied all of the rooms in the main house, we'd have the exclusive use of that house, with its large kitchen, living room and dining room. The couples from Greven could come join us. The dining room table would hold all 10 of us. This arrangement would give us 1.5 extra bathrooms. It was a great idea and we jumped on it. Ahead of our trip, I had a few questions that I thought Ilana could answer (for example, what were our options for getting to the airport after our stay?) She always responded very promptly and the information she provided was always very helpful. We loved staying here! To Sostre is located in a charming neighborhood in the old town city center where all the attached homes line both sides of the steep cobblestoned streets. I can't imagine a more convenient location. When we were out and about but needed a short respite, it was never far to walk home to re-charge. There is a grocery store that is a one minute walk away and this allowed us to buy food to prepare breakfast. We of course also wanted to include pastries from the wonderful bakery that was a 10 minute walk away in Bryggen, on the harbor! There is a large grassy yard that appeared to be shared space of all the homes surrounding it on 3 sides. It had three picnic tables and a grill. If our stay had been longer, I'm sure we'd have used that outdoor space, but we just weren't there long enough! To Sostre provided us with a wonderful place to stay. It was impeccably clean, the beds were comfortable, the showers were great, the kitchen had everything we needed except a microwave oven. The cabinets were stocked with some staples that we were welcome to use, purposely left behind by prior guests, things like flour, coffee, tea, jam, etc. There is no staff on sight during your stay, but it's easy to reach the owner by phone if you have any needs or questions. She lives in another home right in the area. We met her son by chance, and he pointed out his apartment right in the area, as well as the separate apartment his sister occupies just down the lane. I love it that To Sostre is family owned and operated. We were living like locals. We felt right at home! The 2019 Tall Ships festival was going on during our stay in Bergen. There were crazy numbers of people in the streets for this festive event! I can't even imagine how hard it might have been to book To Sostre if I hadn't done that way back in September.

The location is only a walk to just about everything, including the funicular station to take you to the top of the hill. Even better it is only 5 minutes to a stop for the airport bus, which is an excellent and very regular service. Clean, comfortable, close to supermarkets and your own kitchen cupboards for storing food, with pleasant communal areas this was a great place to stay. It is situated in an old part of the city-- cobblestones, weatherboard houses and winding narrow streets. Steep stairs and no lift.

We spent 3 nights at the To Sostre guest home when in Bergen, and loved our stay. We were in the Loft, which was the more expensive of the rooms, but did have its own ensuite bathroom, which we wanted. I believe the other rooms on the 2nd floor, shared a bathroom. The Loft is actually a room that can easily fit four, but there were only two of us – so we had lots of room. The Loft is on the third floor, and so if stairs are difficult, or if you have heavy suitcases, it may be a challenge. But the bed was very comfortable, as well as the bathroom was spacious and the shower had great water pressure. The room and bathroom were clean, and it was quiet. While it is an older home, it clearly had been renovated and had modern décor, which I enjoyed, and there were black-out window shades, which was nice, as it does not get fully dark outside during summer months. Breakfast is not included in the cost, but you could buy food and put it into the refrigerator on the first floor, to have in the morning. The first floor had a kitchen, table and lounge area that everyone shares, and you could buy take-away meals and eat it there. They do have plates and cutlery as well as a coffee maker, so there were many conveniences of a home. To Sostre is centrally located to many things, and we were able to walk everywhere. We also were able to get a bus from the airport without any issues, and it is a short walk to the guest home from where the bus leaves you. When we left, we could easily walk to the ferry terminal. To Sostre is located in an older part of the city, with cobblestone streets and narrow alleyways, which were fun. Again – we very much enjoyed our stay and the guest home is located in a lovely old section of Bergen.

Its is tricky to find in a cobblestone back street set high behind the waterfront and access to the bedrooms is up a steep and tiny wooden staircase, but once you have your bags hauled up this place is great. It feels like a private home and is very cosy. My partner and I were the only guests when we stayed and we found it a wonderful base to explore Bergen.
