A Scandic breakfast is always nice, and so are the one at Solsiden.
As you can arrive by car, and park in the basement, or by bus just outisde, this is a great place to stay. Central, and still both cozy and silent, inside.
They seem to have a lot of conferences but that didnt interfere with us that were there to sleep and work ;)
Outside of the hotel is an area that really makes you wish that you could eat all the time. Lots of places for every taste ... we walked around the closest blocks a bit, and still we found something new, the next time we passed.
Do go to the Nidaros and also Dora -both are sites that really makes you wonder how they built all that!
Be back? Yes, we will stay here next time, as well!
Parking situation is excellent, but as expected it is expensive to park indoors in the city of Trondheim. It is possible to park within only a few steps from the elevator that takes you to the lobby or your floor. Parking spaces are relatively large.
Check in was handled quickly and professionally; no fuss at all.
First impression of the room was not good. There was a lot of dust and debris on the floor and also some in the chair, indicating it had at best been cleaned in a hurry. Doorframe in the bathroom had stains indicating the room hadn't been thoroughly inspected or cleaned in some time. It was late and I was tired from driving all day, and I was already told the hotel had no vacant rooms, so I didn't bother complaining at the time (which I probably should have). Bathroom and beds seemed otherwise clean enough, so it was not a showstopper at the time.
Instructions on how to connect your laptop/tablet/phone to the TV was a plus. They did not have (available?) HDMI cables for us to loan as advertised, so I went out and bought my own. Worked like a charm. Internet was free, and the speed was sufficient for streaming movies without any issues.
Breakfast situation was heavily influenced by the covid-19 situation, and we were required to make table reservations at either 8, 9 or 10 AM. This worked out well, but on our return trip a few days later (which I'll not review separately) only 8AM was available on Sunday, so no sleeping in at all. The breakfast restaurant was well spaced (only every second table was used) which was a plus, there was sanitizer stations everywhere, and bread, cheese and some other spreads were packed in individual bags. However, everyone was handling the same spoons tongs and forks for everything else, so all the precautions seemed kind of moot. The lack of bacon however was unforgivable (a single strip of bacon on the fried eggs doesn't count, but there wasn't even that). I didn't ask why they had no bacon, but no bacon means an instant F on breakfast services in my book, no matter the reason.
Checking out was just like checking in; professionally and swiftly handled, no fuss and we were on our way in less than a minute.

Since I am a Scandic member the vouchers I received paid for my sodas and a snack bag of peanuts. The complementary breakfast was excellent and met the standards of what I expect from the Scandic hotels. The breakfast room is very large and beautiful so there was always a comfortable place to eat your breakfast without being rushed.
My room ,623, was large and overlooked the square to the shopping center, love the heated floors in Norway hotels. Because the complimentary breakfast didn’t start until 6:30 AM and I’d be long gone,I was leaving at 5 AM, the hotel packed for me a bottle of apple juice, two ham sandwiches, two hard boiled eggs, an orange and a banana to take with me!
I will again select the Scandic Solsiden when I return to Trondheim.
Nice and clean rooms. Breakfast was affected by the covid-19 situation, but this was expected. I actually didn’t mind having to choose a time to eat breakfast and I was pleasantly surprised by the good selection of food. The line for breakfast and where to go between the “stations” was a bit chaotic at times. It might be an idea to organize this better, with some signs or something, but it wasn’t a big issue for me.
The hotel has a great location and it takes about 15-20 minutes to walk to most tourist attractions.. Walking is a great way to experience this wonderful city, so don’t forget your sneakers! Nice restaurants (remember to book a table for dinner) and a shopping center right next door. I can recommend this hotel and I’ll be back :)
