Stepping into THE THIEF is sure to rob you of something. Something familiar and shall we say, enslaving at times. And the thing is that the hotel is so good at it… that you might not notice until the end. You suddenly find yourself engaged in a world of new impressions: cutting-edge art, architecture and world-class gastronomy. And then it hits you, what’s been stolen from you…you haven’t had a single thought about your very long to-do list, the responsibilities at home, the everyday worries.

We stayed at The Thief Hotel Oslo after our cruise to Greenland & Scandinavia. The hotel is located in a trendy neighboorhood just in walking distance of restaurants and cafés. The room was spacious and bright. Both breakfast and diner (we had 2) were super. Very friendly staff.

The foyer reception is dark but clean, sleek, and contemporary. A cozy lobby bar with overstuffed furniture lends warmth and ambiance. The room was larger than we expected, with a snug area rug, lovely linens and robes, contemporary bath, and nice view from the small balcony. Right below, within steps are the Fearnley Museum, new National Gallery (a must see), all the restaurants of Aker Brygge, trikk station, and ship landing. Many cruise ships come in and out of here. The breakfast buffet is fabulous. Take advantage of the lovely cheeses, meats, fruits, and baked goods. Fresh juices and sparkling wines for mimosas on weekends. The decaffeinated capuccino was made in a separate machine and delicious. Drinks and lunch on the roof were very nice. Book your private even here.

The Thief is our first stop on the 10-day long Norway trip that will see us through six hotels along the way. As I am sitting at the Opus XI hotel in Bergen I have a better frame of comparison to write a review about the two nights at The Thief. This modern hotel in Oslo is extraordinary. The front desk lady who checked us in was super nice and helpful and we got a wonderful room, while on the lower floor, it had a frontal fiord view through its floor to ceiling window and balcony door. The furnishing including the leather (maybe faux) paneling is pleasing to the eye. Chairs, bedding, linen and robes signal quality. The room has motion-sensative lights and once you leave the room the electricity shuts off because our laptop ran low on battery when we came back. Something to keep in mind. Many reviews rave about breakfast at Opus but Thief breakfast is superior in my view. There are a variety contemporary juices, herring choices, the hot station had an incredible selection from the regular pancake to grilled beets and tomato and mushrooms. Presentation wise, The Thief enhances with placing fruits and yogart in gourmet jars, probably took a lot of work to place them and likely to easiest to eat them, but definitely take son an artisonal look. The lobby has beautiful seating nooks with velvety lounge chairs, thoughtfully placed. Even landings of stairwells are decked out with sculptures. It is befitting that the hotel is a couple minutes of wlak to the Astrup museum which is accessible by the room key. The whole area is new, with canals and bridges and reflection of waterways and new condos and very pleasant street to stroll. Uber is tricky to hail, could take some time to get to hotel, so we asked for hotel to call a car to airport. A couple snuff during our stay - there was no turndown the second night, and bathroom has a ton of small niches, but their decorative function doesn't extend well into utility function. Overall though, what a beautiful hotel and beautiful city. Sitting here in Bergen at Opus hotel, I miss Oslo and Thief greatly.

Being a boutique hotel, the lighting is subdued in the public areas, the elevator and the rooms. I found the bedroom lighting particularly inadequate, although the automatic light in the bathroom is a nice touch when needing a night time visit. The QR codes for working out the lights and the air conditioning, and the room service menu available on the TV are too modern for me. Speaking to the helpful receptionist, whose name may have been Juliana, she understood my request for printed instructions but she could not provide them. On my first evening in Oslo, I had very poor service at a nearby ‘top quality’ fish restaurant, so at 21,55 I was back in my hotel room and rather hungry. I spoke to room service and they informed me the food menu was on the TV .. the hotel has no printed information in the room. I was told the dinner menu finishes at 10pm, and since I was unable to easily operate the TV, I asked room service what was their most popular dish .. a hamburger. I ordered a burger and chips, and suffice it to say, it was delicious. I was a little irked that having left my room at 10am, it had not been made up when I returned at 3pm.

From check in to check out, The Thief exuded European charm. At checkin, the young man made sure we had everything we wanted/needed and accommodated our special requests. The rooftop bar was fun even in a rainstorm. The breakfast was delicious and bountiful.

I had been looking forward to my stay at the Thief, but turned out a bit disappointed. I have stayed at several hotels in the same price range both in Oslo and other cities and I did not feel that this hotel gave me the best value for my money. The welcome at the reception seemed a bit distanced and did not provide a lot of information. The price did not include access to the spa, which I find somewhat unusual for this type of hotel. The opening hours are also limited as the spa closes at 7 pm. I tried to visit the spa 40 minutes before closing time and was told they normally ask guests to leave by 6.30 pm. The interior of the room was nice, but the temperature was cold and difficult to regulate. Surprisingly poor quality on the vanity kit. Breakfast buffet was good, but not more than what I expect from a hotell at this price. No freshly made dish of your own choice included, which I also have been used to at similar hotels. All in all the Thief did not quite live up to my expectations and seems a bit overpriced.

The location was perfect We walked everywhere and lots of restaurants and sights close by. Definitely suggest a ferry trip to explore the Fjord.
