Sommerro
About
Sommerro marks the rebirth of a 1930s landmark into an Art Deco Hotel and hotspot in one of Oslo's loveliest neighbourhoods; Frogner.
Located behind the Royal Palace, and only a 10 minute walk from Nationaltheatret station, where the airport express train comes in, Sommerro is the ideal base from which you can explore the capital.
Sommerro is an open house with a hub of restaurants and bars, including an all-day open brasserie with live jazz every day, a vibrant rooftop outlet and the city's best Afternoon Tea.
Sommerro also boasts a small cinema with weekly screenings, a vast wellness space and state-of-the-art gym. Not to mention: the city’s first rooftop pool and sauna – a year-round destination with sweeping views over Oslo.
Sommerro won the prestigious award "Best Hotel in Norway 2023" from Grand Travel Awards, and has also been included on the prominent "Hot List" by Condé Nast Traveller, as well as the "IT List" by Travel + Leisure.

Our hotel room was spacious, beautifully designed and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the rain shower in the bathroom was just what we needed after long days of exploring the city. The hotel has a fully equipped gym and amazing spa, sauna and pool.
The hotel dining was one of the highlights of our stay; the breakfast spread was outstanding with a wide variety of fresh options. The lunch and dinner experiences were both excellent – the food and drink was top-notch and the service impeccable.
Many thanks to Dominic for making our stay so special. His attentiveness and hospitality made us all feel welcome from the moment that we arrived. Dominic offered great local knowledge and tips and he went the extra mile to make sure everything about our stay was perfect.
Overall, Sommerro is the perfect blend of style, comfort and service. We had a memorable stay and we’ll definitely be returning.

The room is comfortable with a little retro/art deco feel (telephone on the bedside table) and offers a very quiet view, far from the main street. One regret, however: the lighting in the evening for reading in bed is far too dim and the absence of French channels on the television.
Regarding the bathroom, I don't particularly like the predominant black color for either the sink or the toilet: in summary, I don't find it "elegant".
In the same way, the paint on the walls of the bedroom is not to my taste (“cheap” effect), tastes and colors are very personal!
The breakfast is well diversified, of excellent quality with the possibility, in the formula, of ordering a dish (waffles, etc.)
There was a “problem” of out of stock of tea during my stay! I then spoke to a manager so that he could order some and/or pick some up at the local 7/11 store, if necessary, for the next day.
Likewise, one of the young women serving the b'kfast for the tables located near the windows is neither very polite nor very courteous: she always starts her sentences with "what" when you order her! Fortunately, the other members of the room staff are much more “educated”
When you manage the catering of a 5-star hotel, in my opinion, you should know how to manage your stock; to offer several varieties of tea (and that it is not presented in bags) and above all please ensure the good education of your staff that you recruit when they are in direct contact with guests!
At the front office, absence of both a concierge and experienced staff capable of informing you about a good restaurant. The people present during the end of year period limited themselves to suggesting low-end, touristy restaurants located on the port and poorly rated!
Luckily, thanks to the internet, I was able to find them on my own!
Very warm interior decoration of the hotel: Christmas tree, chocolate works that we would like to taste…..
In conclusion: beautiful hotel, well located in Oslo (everything is easily accessible on foot), a few small improvements are possible (see my comment) to achieve, in my eyes, a “flawless” experience!

The good:
- The pillows and bedding were heavenly. The pillows are with a partnership the hotel has with Høie and information for purchase is given. If the company can figure out shipping to the US I look forward to having this element of the trip with me for a long time.
- Upon our arrival at around check-in time (3:00 p.m.), we were advised our room was not going to be ready for 30 minutes or so. Reception was quick to issue a complimentary credit to the lobby cafe. We ended up getting a drink in Ekspedisjonshallen while we wished the credit were transferrable, we ordered a round of cocktails and a bread and butter. The cocktails were interesting and well balanced, the bread freshly baked, and the butter softened and salted perfectly. Breakfast was in the Ekspedisjonshallen each day with interesting options in the stunning setting.
- The decor and ambiance of the hotel are very well planned. We wished there had been more consideration for practical concerns (such as where to put your bags away so as not to clutter the gorgeous room) but the emphasis was on design and no corners were cut on that end.
- I used the gym and sauna in the basement (more on this later) every day. They were both clean and well appointed; a great way to stay centered while away.
The annoying parts:
- I was looking forward to making use of the hotel's two saunas and we specifically booked a Junior Suite to avoid the added fee associated with use of the rooftop sauna facilities. However, during our stay the rooftop sauna was closed for maintenance. We wish this had been communicated in advance of our arrival and/or members of reception been provided more information to share about how long it would be out of order.
-- We arrived on a Sunday afternoon and stayed through Tuesday morning. The information screens in the elevator stated that Izakaya, the rooftop bar and terrace restaurant was open "7 days a week for lunch & dinner during the whole summer." I guess summer was over, because it was not open either night of our stay. We asked reception about the discrepancy and were offered a shrug in return.
TLDR: the hotel is beautiful and beautifully appointed. We wish service had been a bit more proactive where things were not as advertised.

My stay at Hotell Sommerro was not just a temporary break from everyday life; it was a journey that enriched me in countless ways. I quickly got to know the hotel, the people who work there, and the local culture, which gave me a deep insight into what it really means to stay at Sommerro. From the first day I felt welcomed by the friendly staff and it wasn't long before I felt like part of a big family.
One of the most memorable aspects of my stay was the wonderful staff at the hotel. Securities, the cleaning staff, the spa department, the reception (fronthouse), back office, and the restaurant team - all were dedicated, attentive and professional. They knew how to create a warm atmosphere that immediately made guests feel relaxed and comfortable.
Breakfast was a highlight every morning, with an impressive selection of delicacies. I also enjoyed having dinner in the expedition hall where I got very good food, it is a "must" to try. I often went up and visited the restaurants on the roof, Izakaya and Tak. Lovely atmosphere, music, good drinks and a view over Oslo and the Oslofjord. The training room is in a class of its own, something I have not experienced before. And the spa department was fantastically good, calm and relaxing.
I have had the pleasure of staying in a number of hotels around the world, and I can say with my hand on my heart that the people at Hotell Sommerro are the extra service that makes a real difference. Their passion for the well-being of their guests is inspiring and they deserve all the praise they can get. I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to get to know them.
Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone at Hotell Sommerro who have made my stay absolutely wonderful. You have created a memorable experience that I will carry with me for a long time to come. I look forward to visiting you again in the future and enjoying the unique atmosphere and hospitality that only Hotell Sommerro can offer.
Best regards,
Thomas Mjølhus

The breakfast was delicious. A rich selection at the buffet as well as an ala carte menu. Very attentive and friendly staff. Coffee and other types of coffee were served at the table.
The rooms are really welcoming and deliver the little extra.
There will definitely be more visits back to Sommerro - highly recommended.

Bed and room were ok, as you can expect from a hotel in this price range.
Unpleasant that it is not possible to open the windows, both in terms of ventilation and eventual evacuation in case of fire.
The breakfast was a disappointment from start to finish. Had to call the waiter myself to order coffee. Also ordered eggs, but the taste was bad. Obviously bad eggs that were used. I therefore asked to order something else, but was then told that there was only one order from the a'la carte for each visitor. Had to call on the waiter every time to get a refill of coffee. The fact that a half-full cup of lukewarm coffee was served was only in keeping with the rest of the experience. When I went to get more food, the table was cleared and ready for the next guest when I returned.
Tried to share the experience at check-out, but was told that it was better that I answered the questionnaire I would be sent after the stay so that the information went to the right person. I will do that…
