We spent 3 nights here in mid-September and were highly impressed by all aspects of the hotel. The location -- a two-minute walk from the train station (allowing for quick and easy access to the airport) -- is close to many of the city's main attractions, including the fabulous Oslo Opera House, the magnificent National Gallery, and dozens of excellent restaurants and bars. The rooms are quiet and comfortable, the breakfast is excellent, and the downstairs bar is a lively gathering spot with first-rate service. I would definitely return to Amerikalinjen, and highly recommend it for your next stay in Oslo.

Hotel's Favorite
We had 4 nights at this hotel and truly loved our stay here. The staff whether they were from reception, at breakfast or housekeeping just couldn’t do enough for its guests and made us feel most welcomed. From the time we walked in, Jelena was all smiles and was happy to suggest places for dinner and then followed up with making the reservations for us. When we returned for the second leg of our stay, she was at reception and welcomed us by name as if we were her long lost friends! Her colleagues at reception took time to give directions to the places we wanted to visit. Housekeeping was outstanding in that its staff took the extra step to track down some sachets of Breakfast Tea for us although the herbal infusions were the norm at this hotel. We enjoyed the buffet spread at breakfast which was varied and generously laid out. The extra offers of eggs Benedict or omelettes made to order were a lovely touch which we appreciated. Even the small things like having power outlets for charging phones at eye level and conveniently located next to the bedside tables made our stay special. This hotel is definitely well located as to be within a short distance of the Oslo Central Station and also the iconic places like the Opera House and Munch Museum. Buses and trams ply the routes just outside the hotel and the metro is but a stone’s throw so getting around was really easy. We thank the staff for our stay here for the start and at the end of our trip to Norway. A lovely way to finish an awesome 4 week holiday.

Based on our experience, the Amerikalinjen Hotel is everything a hotel should be. First of all, it has a terrific location across the street from the Central rail and bus stations and only a few blocks from the Opera House and a 15 minute walk to the National Museum. The staff is outstanding. Even before we arrived, we had a number of questions which they answered promptly and thoroughly by email. The hotel itself is an elegant and historic space. Our Superior room was small, in the European mode, but offered everything we needed with excellent quality. We found it to be very comfortable, cozy and immaculately clean. The breakfast offered a great range of items, while still maintaining a high standard. For those who seek gluten-free items, they will find plenty to choose from. Some of the breakfasts we had elsewhere in Norway sacrificed quality in their obsession with quantity. I felt the variety at the Amerikalinjen was perfect and appreciated that foods were prepared beautifully and offerings were fresh. The individual omelets were excellent. We also ate dinner in the restaurant at the hotel and found the high standards applied there as well. As an older traveler, there have been other hotels where I have found myself invisible in terms of attention from staff. That is not the case at the Amerikalinjen. Almost every person we came in contact with could not have been more helpful or friendly, from the front desk, to the breakfast staff, to our waitress at the restaurant. Each of them made an effort to forge a personal connection and to address any issues or questions with professionalism. When we had a question about how the lights worked in the room, the man who came to help us even followed up by leaving us a note with written instructions. I cannot wait to return to this exceptional hotel.

I am only writing this review because this hotel just needs a little remodeling to get a five-star review from me. I hope the managers make these changes because this hotel has a lot going for it. My girlfriend and I spent two nights at this hotel. We enjoyed many things about it, but have a couple of complaints. First the positives: 1. Location: This hotel is right next to the main train station and close to everything in the city center. You can get the train directly from the airport for a 22 minute ride (car takes 40 minutes). There is no noise from the train station though as the trains are super quiet. 2. Breakfast: This hotel has fantastic breakfast and breakfast area. We really enjoyed our breakfasts there. 3. Room’s bathroom: The bathroom was completely remodeled and beautifully furnished. 4. Room’s noise level: Even though there was a tram line going around the hotel, the double windows keep the noise out. 5. The bed: Very comfortable and big. 6. Staff: They courteous and professional. Things to improve: 1. Entrance rug: Even though the lobby and the ground floor are nicely decorated the entrance rug looks like a faded leftover from 1970’s. It needs to be replaced! 2. Room decor: The rooms are remodeled halfway! Although the bed looked pretty new and the bathroom was great, the rest of the furniture looked like they were from 1940’s and not well maintained. There was brass that needed to be polished and paint at the windows that needed to be stripped and repainted. Also, the sofa in the room looked as faded as the carpet at the entrance. 3. No bell staff: This was not unique to this hotel (none of the hotels we went to on this trip seems to have a bell service). We had some heavy suitcases and it would have been good to have help with them. In general, our experience was very positive, but this hotel needs a couple of tweaks to be spectacular.

Dear Skibum1345, Thank you so much for sharing your experience. So happy to read that you enjoyed our location, breakfast, rooms, beds & staff. We do not have a bell service at our House, but we will gladly assist with luggage when needed. Most of the furniture have that design, made on purpose. To imitate the look of vintage furniture, but they are all new. Will follow up routines regarding brass and polishing. We are really happy to hear about your wonderful stay in Oslo and hope to see you back again in the not so distant future. Wishing you a lovely Autumn season! Oslo was our starting point for a round the world trip. We chose Amerikalinjen after reading about it online and in the Lonely Planet Guidebook. Arriving from Sandefjord Airport by train and pulling two very large suitcases it was a relief to find that the hotel was located within ten minutes "lugging" distance of the station. Located at the other side of the square is Amerikalinjen, once the headquarters of the Norwegian American Cruise Line. An attractive red hued building that is unmistakable. The staff at reception were very friendly and helpful as was everyone throughout our stay. Obviously capable and well trained they seemed genuinely passionate about their chosen professions. Our room was the Trident Suite which is on the 4th floor in the corner. There was a small (ok tiny) balcony but we did not venture out onto it. A bit chilly and besides I hate heights! Suite was a good size with a somewhat eclectic taste in furniture. Comfortable bed and good bathroom with shower and bathtub. No complaints. We had all our breakfasts at the Hotel. Very good section to choose from with quick efficient service. We also ate dinner there which was also good. Completely unexpectedly my wife and I found ourselves at the Norwegian Jazz Club in the basement of the hotel under the cocktail bar. It was Big band night and although we didn't understand a word of what was said, we really enjoyed the 20 piece orchestra and the tunes from the 30 & 40's. Amerikalinjen is well located for the Opera House and Munch Museum. Both well worth seeing. It is also about a 30 minute walk to the Palace and the Queen's Park. It's not Versailles, but pleasant enough. There is ample shopping and numerous restaurants in the immediate vicinity, together with a tram stop

Rooms are beautiful, modern, super comfortable but still have character from the old building. Great shower, mattress, views of the city. Breakfast buffet was the best we had in four stops in Norway, truly delicious and very wide range of super fresh offerings. But best of all was the service -front desk staff (Kei in particular) went out of their way several times to be welcoming, helpful, and accommodating. Superb stay, can’t wait to come back.

We only stayed one night but the proximity to the train station/ airport shuttle and town can’t be best. Check in is helpful and super efficient. The rooms are well described in the booking, very clean good linens. Breakfast has absolutely everything and can’t be beat. The hotel is a bit hard to recognize- they only have the red A to locate the front door, so use google if you’re disoriented.

Great hotel with attention to detail (design, overall concept, room, library and atrium were so cozy, luxury, bathrobes and slippers). Amazing beauty products by Sprekenhus (loved them so much that I bought some). Breakfast was the best hotel breakfast in a long time (also gluten free options). Friendly staff. Gym and sauna were also great. The dinner prices were too high in our opinion (especially for pasta or burger). Did not find a way to turn off the air-conditioning easily, but when you open the window just a little bit, it goes out automatically, so that solved it easily). Great experience overall and we really enjoyed our stay.
