We stayed here for one night before renting a car to travel to Sorkjosen and Sommaroy. The hotel is right in the centre of town and is excellent value - Tromso is an expensive place and this hotel was around £100 for a double. The room was small but perfectly comfortable and quiet even though it looked out over the entrance and the road. The staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was excellent. We would recommend this hotel to anyone seeking a good value room in Tromso.

We booked this hotel for a four night stay and were very glad we did. The hotel is very central and less than a five minute walk from where many of the tour operators pick up from. The room was compact but more than adequate, the bed was very comfortable, the shower had plenty of hot water and a kettle with tea and coffee provided. The hot and cold buffet was very good with plenty of choice. Complimentary coffee is available throughout the day and between 18:00 and 20:00 complimentary waffles are also available. The staff are also very helpful and will offer recommendations if required.

Stayed here for a few days in January. Reasonably priced, particularly as it is ideally located in the city centre. The bedrooms are small and have a bit of an IKEA feel to them (not necessarily a bad thing) but have all you need if you are not looking for luxury. Breakfast was fine, nothing special as hotel breakfasts go, but perfectly nice. Staff were helpful and efficient. Really enjoyed our few days in Tromso in the snow and would love to go back one day.

Straightforward and efficient check-in. The room, as expected, was small but adequate. It was minimally furnished with a small desk, a single bed and a tiny closet. The room was clean on arrival. The hotel has a lift. The bed was comfortable though rather narrow. Lighting was sufficient, the TV had local channels (who watches TV anyway?), and there were three power points for charging equipment. Climate control was precise through a thermostat, providing more than adequate heating when it was minus 5 to minus 8 outside. Wifi was good. The room came with a kettle, coffee and tea sachets. No fridge, No safe. The bathroom was a bit too compact and towels were unusually small. The shower stall was uncomfortably tight -- I kept hitting my elbow on the screen door. Water pressure was good, hot water came through readily, but the drainage from the washbasin was choked. Drainage from the shower, however, was good. Breakfast: the usual north European buffet, with bread, cheese, ham, eggs. Also had fruit, yogurt and cereal. The location was right in the centre of Tromso’s downtown. Most attractions are within walking distance. The bus stop for the no. 42 bus that goes to the airport is just 50m from the hotel’s front door. That said, Tromso is just a town of 75,000 people, not a city, and my sense is that just about every hotel is centrally located and within walking distance of everything else. In that sense, Amalie's location is not exceptional. In terms of its facilities and the condition of its facilities, this hotel would rate about 3 points ("Average") based on my standard rating system applied across the world. However its price level means a poor value-for-money proposition and so I knock it back by one point to 2 points (as shown above) i.e. "Below average". This is after allowing for the higher labour cost in Norway. I can't help but notice that Amalie's price level is substantially (40%) higher than hotels in Oslo for a similar class of centrally-located hotel (see my review of Citybox Oslo).

Thank you for a very well-worded review. We hope you enjoyed your stay, despite some issues. We will, of course, We do feel it is necessary to point out that comparing rates in two such wildly different areas and markets is rather unfair. If you ever decide to vist the great north again, please do so in summer, and stop by, we know you will be pleasantly surprised by the difference!

I came here to see and experience the magic of Auro Borealis, and boy I was very lucky to see and experience the show the whole night. I booked this hotel since I am only travelling solo and I found out that this is a gem and worth every penny. It is right in the middle of everything you need as a tourist in the town. Just 1 minute to the meeting point if you are going for whale safari or Aurora Borealis chase. Best bars and restaurants along the harbor promenade are just 1-5 minutes’ walk. The room is just a right size as a solo traveler, clean and the staffs are very helpful and friendly. The hotel front door is locked after 1100 hrs, but your room key could be used. Breakfast is really both authentic and excellent. Unlimited supply of coffee and tea are always available 24 hours in the restaurant. If you are hiring a car, this place is not very convenient because there is no free parking place. There are some parking place right outside (6 slots), which will cost you 27 kroner/hour (free at night and during Sundays).
