This property is a far cry from the gold standard typically exhibited by the InterContinental brand. We have had the great fortune to stay with this chain for many years throughout the world and this was by far the most disappointing stay we have ever experienced. We typically book an Intercontinental without concern. Our recent stay has caused us to completely rethink that approach and will now do a serious deep dive on investigating a particular property before ever booking an Intercontinental again. Upon check in I inquired about upgrading to the concierge floor and was simply told no, that would not be possible as the hotel had picked out a 'special room' for our stay. At no point was our status as an hotel premium member acknowledged and upon arriving at the room, there was clearly no consideration of the automatic upgrade that was supposed to be included for our membership status. The room was worn and quite frankly filthy (used tissue by the bedside table and candy wrapper by the closet), two (2) bulbs were burned out, towels I might find in a much lower grade establishment, and the shower curtain had visible mold. Adding insult to injury the television did not work properly. As if that was not enough to seriously compromise our stay, at approximately midnight we were awakened by very loud noise in the hallway that continued for the next 45 minutes. This included ongoing discussions and repeatedly slamming doors. I called down to the front desk and was told "you need to understand we had a large family checking in and they have a great deal of luggage". The noise did not subside and when I finally entered the hallway myself to address the situation I witnessed a member of the hotel staff actually carrying on the conversation with the guests about their accommodations directly outside our door. The behavior of the guests, the staff and the front desk upon being apprised of the situation was shocking. In addition, the thought of placing guests who were checking in that late on a floor by other guests when the hotel was clearly in no way near capacity is an affront to common customer service. The noise continued for an additional ten (10) minutes after I entered the hallway without so much as a visit from any of the hotel staff to address the ongoing and nearly one hour problem. Upon checking out in the morning on our way to the airport, we asked at the front desk for a manager and/or a business card so the issues might be addressed directly. The staff member went into the office behind the desk and proceeded to have a conversation with the other staffers in the office as they presumably slowly looked through cabinets for a business card. Really rather shocking as a guest has obviously experienced an issue and they couldn't immediately bring a manger to the desk, and/or even provide a simple means of contact. Needless to say we left for the airport, and then had to undertake numerous calls to even secure contact information for the hotel management. Subsequent contact after several attempts provided a less than satisfactory reply from the Guest Relations Manager 'Oh we are facing a serious staffing issue as most hotels in Europe'. Wow. The stay at this property was an epic fail. The fact that it occurred at an InterContinental has seriously diminished what we had come to expect of this higher end chain. In such a beautiful and historic city, there are many other options that should be seriously considered.

Dear dougn630, I am sorry you had such a horrible experience for the night spent in our Hotel during holiday season, which should have been a relaxing one. We do our best to provide the best service we can, I do admit, we were a bit overwhelmed at the time you stayed, which obviously influenced the quality of your stay. We been in contact with the IHG Service Center and even if it is rather late, I believe a proper compensation has been arranged. Sometimes things do go wrong with a stay, I am terribly sorry that your stay did not go as expected & for not making it up right away. I will discuss your feedback in detail with my staff, to learn what to do better and how to handle stays that do not go as planned. Thank You for taking the time to provide us the valuable feedback. Kind Regards, Joao Everard Front Office Manager

I was there for a few nights in February 2023 and lived in two different rooms. I am an IHG member and hoped to receive a reasonable welcome or upgrade or similar. The checkin personnel was extremely friendly and polite but not well trained which made checking in and later checking out a bit annoying. Unfortunately, the hotel is very, very old so, the rooms smell old and mouldy. So does the A/C system, which was used to be the heating during my winter stay there. They are not clean, and, in the bathroom, the wooden wood panelling fell off the bathtub. The water heaters in both rooms were not working properly and hot/cold water was changing unexpectedly often during shower by itself. The staff during breakfast and in the evening in the bar/lounge were respectful but except the longterm bar personnel not really trained well or professional. Breakfast is from great variety and choice and everything tased very well. However, the restaurant toilet was again dirty and not maintained and disgusting. Overall, I think, I will not visit this hotel anymore unless they undergo a major renovation and have proper hospitality industry adequate staff.

If you want to be mistreated because you are not white, please, stay at this hotel. Not only that, when we complained to one manager he stated "we have been receiving a lot of complains like this but if I complain, I will get fired, go to the general manager." We did, and he said "we have been receiving a lot of complaints about it..." that was all he said!

Dear leofalcon, Thank you for staying with us and for your time in providing valuable feedback. I am sorry to hear you had such a bad experience & for sure something did happened that made you feel mistreated. I remember you stayed during the holiday season, a very busy time that may cause longer waiting times for service. This is what I meant with we have been receiving a higher number of complaints like this. Holiday Season in Vienna is very busy & the Hotel is very busy during these times, it really may happen that my colleagues are unable to actively pay attention to who came first, who is next & so on. I know it should not be like this, but this was. The after covid business was like this for us and any other Hotel I know about in Europe, it was difficult to hire on such a short period of time. We now have appropriate Staff & resources to provide the service that is expected from an InterContinental. I think racist is not a appropriate description of our staff, as we employ 34 different nationalities and most of us have different backgrounds, we actually take quite some pride in our diversity. I am sorry that you did not feel welcome, we will continue to work harder to raise our level of service. To complete I would just like to say, that we actually had a friendly conversation about it back then, I enjoyed talking to you. I just don't remember it the way expressed in your review, as I don't remember being concerned of getting fired. All our complaints get logged, as small as they are, so did your complaint. Nobody got fired. Hope you had a memorable few days in Vienna, Kind Regards, Joao Everard Front Office Manager

Very nice hotel, elegant, quite good value with Amex Platinum deal. Convenient to the underground; a little bit of a walk if arriving by train. Cafe in lobby serves good meals and drinks though there is no more encloses formal restaurant for dinner service. Extensive breakfast, very nice value when included. Ample fitness facility. Very courteous staff. Extended our stay here.

Ugly sort of building from the outside but once you step inside your not disappointed. Service was really excellent, food I enjoyed was lovely including a very good breakfast. Rooms are typical box like for the age of the building and you’ll get much larger rooms in some of the more traditional hotels but nothing wrong with them at all. Great location beside City Park walking distance to Inner City and loads of bars and restaurants and a metro station right across the road.

Classic hotel with a very good location. Breakfast is good and the bar is also comfortable and professional. The room is old and for sure they need a renovation. The service by the way was very good. In summary there are much better alternatives in Vienna city center.

We had 2 Suites booked for a few nights just prior to Christmas but after reading some reviews here I was anxious about my choice prior to my arrival. Luckily I was very pleasantly surprised, I had requested rooms close to each other but understood if this was not possible however we were given great rooms with superb views on the top for sharing their own entrance corridor. The staff had acknowledged my wife's birthday with a lovely cake and personalized card too. As we were two families of 4 I assumed the rooms would be small but we had plenty of room and 2 bathrooms really made a difference. Working in the travel industry and having stayed as some excellent hotels my expectations are always high but I would say managed too and on this occasion, they were exceeded. The location was perfect only a short walk anywhere, breakfast was everything you could possibly need and of good quality. The club lounge was well stocked and was a great place to get some work done prior to the family waking up and also for drinks and canapes in the evening. I would highly recommend a stay here and would stay here again if I am fortunate to return to Vienna.

As a recognized brand it delivered but didn’t exceed my expectations, with no spa and only ice ring availability for skating it feels not sufficient. Rooms were spacious enough for extended stay and cleaned well. Concierge helpful and efficient. Staff multilingual and very helpful. One curious fact that there was no scotch in the bar 🤔 The restaurant served traditional cuisine and the breakfast buffet was excellent. Vienna is accessible by car within a 10 minutes ride and walking up to half-hour so the hotel is well located.

Dear racuch, thank you so much for staying with us and for providing us valuable feedback. It is pleasure to hear that you were satisfied with our staff. Currently we do not offer a spa with a pool, anyway we do offer a sauna and steam bath. The hotel will be refurbished in the following years and I can guarantee that we will offer a lot more spa facilities. That our property does not offer scotch whiskey is unfortunately not the right information. At our hotel, you can find a huge offer of whiskeys. Since we are one of the most famous bars in Vienna, our Intermezzo Bar have a special whiskey card, which includes more than 150 positions (Scotch, Bourbon, International, ...) I am deeply sorry that you did not have a chance to explore our charming whiskey experience with our bar staff. If you plan to visit Vienna again, please let us know, so we can invite you to have a whiskey tasting at our property. I would be very pleased to speak with you by phone and to hear about your ideas how we could exceed your expectations for your future stay. With much appreciation, Rebecca Traunkar Guest Relations Manager

The hotel is still an elegant building, but very outdated. The bathroom was tiny and several things were broken. Friendly repair people promptly responded to any request we had. The breakfast buffet was large and very international. However, every morning we were made to feel like beggars trying to get a table. When we did get a table the waiter would let other guests take our table if one of us didn’t stay there to guard it. Most staff was very friendly, but treated some guests much better than other guests. We tried to sit at the bar and restaurant area three evenings in a row, and all three times were rudely told we couldn’t because they were full. New Year’s Eve they were mostly full, but the other two evenings they were only about half full. Still we were rudely sent away. They would always say all the open chairs and tables were “reserved.” We were made to feel like we were 2nd class guests. What bothered us the most was that all the guests who could sit there were 100% white people all three evenings. If you fit that demographic, you probably will have a great stay.

Dear dyoungbar, thank you for staying with us and for sharing this review with us. I am very disappointed to read about your experience. Our whole staff gives their best to provide at the InterContinental Hotel in Vienna an unforgettable experience to our guests. The employees at our company treat every guest equally. I would like to inform you that we are proud to be an international team with more than 40 different nationalities. Since we are working for an international hotel group, I feel very sorry that you felt at our hotel like a 2nd class guest, because this is definitely not the way of our corporate culture. For us, hospitality is all about making all our guests feel welcome, comfortable and valued. If you would like to discuss this concern further, please do not hesitate to contact me anytime. It would be a pleasure if we get an opportunity to give you understanding of our brand promise. With kindest regards, Rebecca Traunkar Guest Relations Manager

Check in: after having an airline crew take up the entire front desk for 5-10 minutes we asked if we could check in. Checking them took another 5+ minutes. Upon entering our room it was 85+ degrees. We shut off the heat and opened the windows where we had to sleep every day with the windows open to enjoy temperatures under 80 every night. The beds have plastic liners on the mattresses and caused us to sweat every night. Mattresses sag to the side as if a HUGE person slept there the night before. The shower curtains are so short on the ribs that water leaks out during the shower. On to the "Club Lounge" most servers / attendants were nice. However there were some guests that obviously demanded service and received it. The rest of the guests (me) who paid $700 + per day were definitely looked down upon. We asked for sandwiches at 3:55 and were told we are closing in 5 minutes there is no more. During dinner we asked for more salad and were told there was no more at 5:20. Several people were in lounge and had HUGE bowls of salad delivered to them. This is the WORST Intercontinental we have ever stayed at in the entire world and we have been to 30 different Intercontinental Hotels. As a Diamond Elite Ambassador it is hard to write this review. However I give commendations just as easy. Additionally tips were given generously and obviously unappreciated.
